Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Mac Games was Screen reader for MAC
Hi, Thanks. Keep me posted off list on Mac's Java progress with Java 6. I'd really like to go Java 6, but Apple is a version behind the rest of the operating system comunity. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Mac Games was Screen reader for MAC
Hi Cara, Well, call it an educated guess. Generally, on Linux unless I intentionally update the version in the Ubuntu updates is a major version or so behind whatever Sun has posted for developers. Ubuntu is pretty good grabbing the Java jdk and jre source and posting it in their commercial add ons, but like with Mac they don't upgrade every single time a new version is posted on Sun's web site. So I was guessing correctly that Mac grabs the most popular and widely used versions and incorperate it in to their operating system rather than grabbing the latest available version. Apple is using Java 5.0 right now, but is preparing to release support for Java 6.0, which was originally supposed to be included with Leopard but wasn't quite ready. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Mac Games was Screen reader for MAC
Hi, Ignore previous post. I just found a nice little web page on the Apple web site about Java development for Mac OS Leopard. Apparently Java 1.5.13 is built directly into the core os with the accessibility bridge for VoiceOver. pretty darn sweet if you ask me, and it isn't so far out of date that I can't live with using Java 1.5 instead of 1.6. Hi Cara, Do you happen to know the Java runtime versions used by Mac OS Tiger and Leopard? I know they are allot older than Windows and if I were to do Java games for Mac I'd need to know what version of the JDK to use my guess is they are around 1.4.2 or JRE 5.0. [Audyssey] Accessible Mac Games was Screen reader for MAC
Hi, Unfortunately, porting many accessible games over to Mac would be pretty difficult since most of them are built on Visual Basic 6 technology. In theory Montezuma's Return could be ported over, but I'd have to find something else to replace DirectX like SDL which I am not sure how well developed it is compared DirectX these days. [Audyssey] Accessible Mac Games was Screen reader for MAC
Hi Cara, I've been looking into the possability of getting a Mac for my computer network for quite some time, and would be interested in writing some accessible Mac games myself. The problem is for me since I don't have a Mac myself and not a personal group of dedicated Mac testers it is a little difficult for me to design and test Mac games. I know that one option is to go Java, but I still have a few gripes about Java's sound programming abilities. The other is Python, but I have no idea how to get Python based games setup and running on a Mac.
