 Hey
I still play the game and have gotten a few things I have a character that
has successfully stayed alive for about 80 game days now but he's stuck
since there isn't any food or water for miles where I am and there is a
 high
risk of dying if I try to rest. I might try again though.

 Hiya,
Off and on over the past year or so, I've been working at playing
through an old DOS game which Michael reviewed in Issue 1 of Audyssey.
I've not come anywhere close to beating it, and don't want to really.
I've yet to really make it much of anywhere--true, I've gotten fairly
 rich
and found a few rather amazing places, but haven't yet found any real
direction. I don't mind this in the least.
One thing I love about this game, which I haven't found anywhere else,
is a sense of a world with unlimited places to explore. There is this
 odd
sense that if I just keep going in a direction somewhere I'll find
something interesting, or run into a new town, or a new inn, or a new
place where I can appreciate the depth of detail that's offered here.
I've never before encountered a sense like the following:
When the character in Fallthru travels from town to town over roads,
 it
seems like he's really traveling somewhere. I get this odd sense that,
wow, that really did take three days! (That's game time, of course.)
Since I haven't really scratched the surface of this game yet, I have to
wonder what it'll be like if I keep going.
I know this game isn't for everyone. It's tedious and hard to get
anywhere sometimes because you're constantly trying to stay alive. There
are so many places to go that it is hard to choose. I find myself
 setting
out long term goals for spots I want to see and realizing, a few days and
some food later, that I really should've reconsidered. No other game has
 quite given me this feeling.
I'm just curious, therefore, if anybody on this list still plays the
game? If so, does it stay this engrossing all the way through? No,
 don't
answer that. I want to find out for myself.
 All the best,
 Zack.

I could probably set up dos box, accept, I don't have any form of hardware
synth. I have a dectalk express lying around somewhere, but I've lost most
of the cables an things for it, and I'm not certain my laptop has a cereal
port, though I think it does. Either way its not installed and I'm not even
sure it works, so I guess I'll just have to stick to mudding and web-based
games till jaws decides to behave itself, heheh.

 cHello,
Unfortunately, there is no Windows version. I believe in Issue 36 Michael
had an interview with the game's author where among other things he said
that he'd lost the source code for the game and so couldn't update it.
Nor do I have any idea why Jaws acts that way. I don't use it myself and
so have no knowledge of how it works. I have had great success playing
the game with either Window-Eyes, or DosBox. But DosBox isn't for
 everybody. The setup is complicated.
I'm sorry i can't give you more hopeful news.
 Yours,
 Zack

Fallthru I'd like to play this game. I remember trying it once several
years back, but ever since I updated to jaws 8 I've been having a lot
of problems getting Dos games to work properly. For some reason the
command boxes start up and immediately close back down. Is there a
windows version of this game somewhere? And if not, does anyone have
any ideas as to why Dos programs won't start on my computer? Its a jaws
problem, that I know, because I've had one of my sighted friends start
a dos program without jaws running, and it starts up fine, then I
started jaws while that window was still open and it immediately
closed. Hmm... But yeah, this definitely sounds like my type of game,
almost reminds me of Fable. Sounds awesome. - Original Message -

I lost my older message somewhere in the deleted items folder, so I guess
I'll just have to reply here. I just tested the fallthrough application
again, and this time I actually got jaws to say something before the program
closed. It said, Can not execute, and then it gave me the path of the
program and terminated it. Anyone know what's up with this? Is there some
kind of block that stops command boxes from running in windows that can be
removed somewhere? I remember I had this same problem with an old desktop a
while back and could never figure it out there either. Apparently it isn't
jaws, because it lasted a bit longer when I tried that NVDA screen reader,
but it still terminated. Any ideas anyone? Sorry if this is getting a bit
off topic of gaming, I'd just like to give this game another chance.

Hiya,
It will work under Windows, yes, if you're using Jaws you can set the
speech mode to 'say all' with ins+s while in its window.
The game is at:
ftp.ifarchive.org/if-archive/games/pc/fallthru.zip
Or, if you prefer, go to www.ifarchive.org and from there through the
directories.
Have fun,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] An appreciation for Fallthru

2007-07-16 Thread Zachary Kline
Hello,
I can run it under Dosbox, yes, if I first install a DOS screen reader.
This isn't necesarily a trivial or easy job. I just mannaged to pull it off
today, and it works quite well, but I'm not quite sure I could give you
directions on how to repeat what I did. It'll only help anyway if you have
a hardware synthesizer.
If you don't, though, you can still quite possibly play it just under
Windows. The mouse or equivalent review cursor is needed, but if you have
that and can read with it the game will work reasonably well.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

 Hi.

You can get fallthrough at http://www.classicgaming.com/ascii/

the only problem I found with the game was a lot of pausing and slowing
down. apparently this is common when running dos aps with windows, but did
make the game rather unplayable for me, which was a shame sinse it looked
 great.

Are you running it with dosbox or something similar zak? or just through
 windows?

In fact, any advice on playing this game would be appreciated.

 Beware the fall Grue!

 Hiya,
Off and on over the past year or so, I've been working at playing
through an old DOS game which Michael reviewed in Issue 1 of Audyssey.
I've not come anywhere close to beating it, and don't want to really.
I've yet to really make it much of anywhere--true, I've gotten fairly
 rich
and found a few rather amazing places, but haven't yet found any real
direction. I don't mind this in the least.
One thing I love about this game, which I haven't found anywhere
 else,
is a sense of a world with unlimited places to explore.
I find myself
 setting
out long term goals for spots I want to see and realizing, a few days
 and
some food later, that I really should've reconsidered. No other game
 has
 quite given me this feeling.
I'm just curious, therefore, if anybody on this list still plays the
game? If so, does it stay this engrossing all the way through? No,
 don't
answer that. I want to find out for myself.
 All the best,
 Zack.

Hi Zak.

I've been using Hal's virtual focus, whicfh generally works fine for
reviewing anything with text in it and performing mouse opperations.

It was the slowdown, - both of load times and of speech that was getting
on my whick though with fallthrough unfortunately. I should possibly try it
again though, or see if I could sort the issue out.

All the best,

Dark.

Hmm. Try using NVDA.
http://nvda-project.org
I'm not sure how they made the Dos box so accessible, however its working
very well with games that are in the Text Adventure Development System,
Oh, and this part is for Phill. If anyone is looking for any of the demos
to some of Phill's older games in Dos, (yes I know they're old, however
they're still popular,) check out this link:
http://www.nfbnet.org/download/games.htm

The demo to Panzars In North Africa is there! Cops 98 I believe is there
to. Fox and Hounds I think is there also, I liked that maze game also. I
wonder Phill, if there was a way to make the full Dos games as Freeware? I
know the windows version of the DOS games don't work well, but would it be
a possibility one day? The game I always wanted to try, and I never did, was
Space Envators!

Man, how that felt like a fortune at the time, a hundred of them!

I still play the game and have gotten a few things I have a character that
has successfully stayed alive for about 80 game days now but he's stuck
since there isn't any food or water for miles where I am and there is a
 high
risk of dying if I try to rest. I might try again though.

Subject: [Audyssey] An appreciation for Fallthru

 Hiya,
Off and on over the past year or so, I've been working at playing
through an old DOS game which Michael reviewed in Issue 1 of Audyssey.
 All the best,
 Zack.
