[Audyssey] What is a Crossword?

2008-03-18 Thread ari
Hi all,
On the subject of Crosswords, I know this does sound a stupid question, but
I've never really understood what exactly a crossword is, even though I've
heard braille ones do exist, I've never seen one, from where do you get
them? I know it's a grid thing, but how large is it and what do people
mean when they talk about things like joined, across, etc? Is there an
accessible one that I could maybe see or try to understand it, I know ME2
used to make one, but I was never able to try that.
Ari

Hello ari.

A crossword is a grid of squares, some with letters filled in, some blank.
The object is to fill letters into all the squares to form words and phrases
both horizontally and vertically.

to help, some squares are numbered, and the numbers refer to a clue which
lets you know what word or phrase might go in that row or collumn. the clue
usually takes the form of a litle riddle, the answer being the appropriate
word.

for more info see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossword

As to accessible crosswords, I did here once about a self-voicing crossword
game which even let you write your own, but where you might get it, or what
happened to it I don't know.

I'd imagine there are braille crosswords somewhere as well (though filling
in the letters on a brailer might be fun), but again I have no idea where
you'd get them.

Hth.

Yep, that's the application all right. It's rather good, and I
think you can emboss them too in braille, and print.

Re: [Audyssey] What is a Crossword?

2008-03-18 Thread Charles Rivard
A crossword is a grid of letters that is made from words. Usually, words
run from top to bottom, or left to right.

Clues are given as to what each word is. For example, 1 across might be
hard water. The grid shows that it consists of 3 letters. Another clue
would be 1 down: a very cool building and this word would use the first
letter of that first word as its first letter. This word would be written
from top to bottom. The word would be 5 letters long.
