Re: [Audyssey] audio games on a laptop

2008-01-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello Nicol,

Quote
i went to the u s ay games site. N v d ay does not recognize the buy now
button next
to monte. It only recognizes the following:
montizuma's return
preorder
30 dollars
graphic pixel.gif.
End quote

That is very oddd behavior, because I specifically tested NVDA with my
web site prier to posting it to the web sight. What web browser and
version of it are you using? I just started NVDA 0.5 and went to that
page with Mozilla Firefox 2.0.11 and the buy now button is working
perfectly. I also switched over to Internet Explorer 7 with NVDA and
again the buy now button is working perfectly. So I don't know what the
deal is with your issue.
I hate to say this, but sometimes when I get complaints like this I have
to consider the fact it can be the user's fault and not my web site or
the screen reader involved. Either that or something is not setup
correctly on your brother's laptop. Either case I have just tested it
under both conditions you suggest and I can down arrow directly to the
buy now button, press enter, and fill out the order form.

Quote
I tried pressing enter where it says graphic pixel.gif nothing happens.
Not even
pressing the left mouse button works and a laptop doesn't have the slash
and star
keys a desktop has used for clicking and it appears that n v d ay
doesn't have a
click functionality.
End quote

On the contrary NVDA 0.5 does have left click functionality. However, it
is not on the star or slash keys. The fact you are quite unaware of this
suggests to me you aren't vary familiar with NVDA, and you are
attempting to use NVDA as if it were Jaws. All I can say is you really
do need to read the nVDA documentation, and learn how to use the screen
reader before blaming the web site developer for issues that is in all
likelyhood not his or her fault.

Quote
So my new year's message to game developers is:
please make your websites more accessible for less privileged blind
people making
use of a free screen reader and a laptop, who wish to download or
purchase games.
End quote

If you knew me at all you would not have insulted me with that
statement. To Set the record strait I have both a laptop and a desktop
and I have tested that web site with more screen readers than you
probably have access to. I tested that web site with NVDA 0.5, Window
Eyes 6.1, Jaws 8.0, and even with Orca 2.18 for Linux. In each case I
didn't experience any serious difficulties in accessing the web site. I
take great pains to make everything I create user friendly and accessible.
I can't do anything about your issue if you don't give me the specific
setup that is causing the conflict, and I can't see anything in the code
to suggest any issues either. It is a standard html button. There is
nothing I can do to "make that button more accessible," because it is
already using standard and proper html code which should present itself
to any screen reader with no issues.

Hi Ari,
Yes, that is true. NVDA is still pretty new, and it's access isn't up to
par with Jaws or Window Eyes no matter what might be said about it.
However, interesting thing is I tested it myself just 5 minutes ago and
it worked fine with the USA Games web site.
As for Nicol's keyboard it sounds pretty non-standard for a laptop
keyboard. My laptop has two shift keys where he says he only has one,
and my arrow keys are in the same configuration as a desktop where his
seam to be in an odd arrangement.
Bottom line I can't be expected to support every odd or weird screen
reader quark or a keyboard with a weird layout just for one user. In the
majority of cases noone should have any problems with my shopping cart
which was tested with four different screen readers and passed.

You can write to the NVDA list which is at www.NVDAproject.org and then you
can tell them that the screen reader isn't reading all sites yet. You can
use mozilla firefox that's what they recomend and then you can also tell
them thatt you used this the screen reader to play games then maybe in the
next version all those bugs will be fixed. You send those suggestion to
Michael Curran.

Hi Nicol,
You have to change NVDA to use laptop keyboard, I'm using a laptop with
JAWS, and I don't have problems. Also, maybe the keyboard of the laptop
you're using is strange, because my arrows are all in the right places,
actually my laptop works better with games then the old desktop did! You
must remember, NVDA is also new and still doesn't work properly with a lot
of stuff although I'm really hoping it will improve, but for hard sites and
stuff use a JAWS demo.

[Audyssey] audio games on a laptop

2008-01-05 Thread 0722001794
My brother allowed me to explore a bit on his laptop. He was even so kind to
download n v d ay for me. Because my cellphone service provider offers a
contract for 500 south african rand then they give one a laptop and unlimited
internet access and 500 mb download capacity. So now i explored my brother's
laptop a bit. A laptop does not have the extended arrows a desktop has. A
continuous movement such as shift plus up arrow in sod would be impossible as
a laptop only has one shift key located to the immediate right of the slash
key and the up arrow sits far above it. So to play games on a laptop i have to
get a bluetooth keyboard. So on my brother's laptop i went to jim kitchen's
site. By pressing the arrows n v d ay only says top blank bottom. My brother's
laptop has a touch sensative mouse. Its just a little square over which sighted
people rub their fingers to move the pointer. While moving my fingers across it
n v d ay reads the text but the mouse is blind user unfriendly. But n v d ay
reads other sites fine indicating all elements including tables. Then i went
to the u s ay games site. N v d ay does not recognize the buy now button next
to monte. It only recognizes the following:
montizuma's return
