I've never managed to do it since like you I always seem to get swarmed by multiple enemies (bears and rhinos usually), and if I do survive my health is so low there's no chance at all of me getting even halfway through the level. I always try to reserve the slingshot for bears but it always seemed like other enemies kept getting in the way. And of course it didn't help that I blew a major opportunity when I happened to get really lucky with a FOrtune Field early on and got up to almost 500 strength.
