Hello Che it's Jason known as Blind Fury, Sorry for not putting periods to seperate my sentences. Anyway thanks for the advice you are giving me so I know it for the future. The reason why I was probably so much off topic because when I am gone from my computer for a couple of days or visiting friends or doing other things during the day my emails get backlogged in the computer. So what happens isI reply to the messsages with in a couple of days at time. So to prevent this problem I will try to make an effert to check my email everyday so messages don't back log in the computer. your friend, Jason known as Blind Fury - Original Message - From: Che [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, March 03, 2007 11:19 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review Hi Jason, I am writing this so Thomas doesn't have to be the bad cop all the time. As a result a feature I liked was taken out. The new mixer I have only offers line in and microphone devices for recording. As far as restarting in dos, um, that has been gone for years. However, there is a command prompt Window which you can use to load older dos programs if they will run in Vista. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Jason, Agreed. We shouldn't jump to absolute conclusion about Vista just yet. Things could change in a later service pack or Windows update. We are talking about an os barely a month old, and things are bound to come up which needs smoothing out that could t take a few months to work out. When XP came out it was very buggy, had issues, but six years later it is the most stable and advanced operating system MS has ever come out with. A couple years from now Vista could potentially pass XP up as the better operating system. jason wrote: Helllo Everybody why don't we just wait instead of jumping to conclusions that these features for your mixers won't work for Vista maybe we need to give the companies more time and then there will be probably a revised program for vista remember this is what happened with xp when it first came out it had bugs and features were taken out and if we tell microsoft about the bugs in the programs or what we want added to the program it will possibly work. your friend, Bind Fury ___ Gamers mailing list .. Please keep giving us updates on your observation of Windows Vista as you use the program Thanks again. your friend, Blind Fury - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Tuesday, February 27, 2007 2:53 AM Subject: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review Windows Vista In Review by Thomas Ward Hello gamers, friends, and fellow developers, As many of you are no doubt aware over the weekend I took my desktop PC apart, did some hardware upgrades, and ended the weekend with a from scratch install of Windows Vista Home Premium. In this email article I have decided to take a very independent review of the operating system neither condemning or praising Vista, and let the facts I present speak for themselves. All of us have no doubt already heard absolute horror stories about Vista. Same is true there are some articles out there stating Vista is the greatest os since sliced bread. I think both views are biased, and are not looking at both angles of this issue. Therefore, I am going to attempt to take a neutral roll here, and just state what I both liked and disliked about my Vista experience so far. Installation I've been installing operating systems alone or aided by a sighted reader for on 15 years, and the Vista Home Premium install was extremely simple and strait forward compared to earlier installations of Windows. In this regard I found Vista's installation scored high points with me as far as ease of installation for a new user. Basically, I began my install by placing the Vista dvd in my dvd drive, and rebooted the system which landed me in the Vista setup wizard. The first screen had several options such as keyboard type, language for the install, and other general stuff which for me was fine since it was all ready setup for a standard American PC user. One other button available here was a utility that would scan your system for Vista compatibility. I find this nice as it will trouble shoot hardware and software issues you may have if you proceed with the install. As I had already tested this with Microsoft's Vista Adviser tool earlier I knew I would pass this check, and skipped it. However, as a technical adviser for many home users I like knowing Vista has the ability to check this stuff out before totally blowing an install not aware of what to expect. On the next major screen I was prompted for my registration name and my company. Again a no brainer here. On the following screen I was prompted for the installation product key which my wife read to me off the back of the product case. Once entered it was time to move on. As I recall the following screen asked me how I would like to do on line product activation. I checked run automatically the first time I logged on to the Internet. No big deal here. Following that screen we get an option to select our installation type. My version gave two options upgrade or custom. Upgrade will update your Windows 2000 or XP system to Vista not overwriting your data, settings, etc like a usual upgrade would do. Custom allows the power user to clean the hard drive all operating system files, data, etc and do a from scratch install. I chose the custom advanced installation since I am just that kind of guy. For those running an upgrade the custom screens I will see next don't apply. In short they involved selecting a drive partition, adding and deleting partitions, formatting and allocating space, etc... Once I finished with the custom screens the Vista install began extracting the operating system to the cleared hard drive. This took around 45 minutes give or take a few. Following the copy Portion of the install Vista configured my hardware, did a bunch of internal setups, and took us to the post install faze. After everything is configured the post installation faze had three or four screens that are very easy to answer. Basically, Vista asked for my primary user name, password, colors, background, and end user preferences. After I supplied all that Vista restarted one more time and install was complete. It came up with the new Vista desktop theme, and the new welcome center. Vista Accessibility Many of us have no doubt have heard about Vista's new graphical environment. Yes, that is true Vista's user interface has completely changed, and visually is totally a different experience for us. However, it was not he accessibility nightmare I thought it was going to be upon starting this upgrade/install. Before installing Vista I downloaded the new Window Eyes 6.1 beta for Vista at http://www.gwmicro.com/beta and burned it to a cd for handy installation. Since the Window Eyes

Hi Aaron, That is a good question. I haven't decided how to go about it under vista, but my desktop isn't the only computer here. I still have a computer running Ubuntu Linux, and my laptop running Windows XP SP2. For the time being I will likely do the trailers on the laptop until I find a good alternative under Vista. aaron danvers-jukes wrote: but if what you hear is gone, then how are you going to record your game trailors for usa games! regards, aaron ___ Gamers mailing list .. well it depends what code ms is going to release. Speaking of which they are already writing a service pack so who knows, maybe that will fix stuff. Almost on the day they released vista ms decides to do another pack for release at the end of the year. I suspect that when vista came out it was not fully finnished. Rather than having setbacks to the date ms just released the buggy vista and started a service pack. Who knows. Hi Josh, Yeah, if you want XP you'll have to do that, but keep in mind you will have to locate drivers for the new hardware for XP which could be an issue if the hardware was designed primarily for Vista and beyond. Not saying that will happen, but could happen. Josh wrote: so does this mean that when we buy a new pc we'll have to reformat it, and put xp on it if we want xp instead of vista? Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Che, Yeah, the VIP Conduit and other blind programs would be nice. I think Vista has changed allot and blind users should get a look at it before deciding to upgrade. This isn't something you just jump on without knowing a little about it. I mean just getting around the new default environment is bad enough and is a bit of a shock. For example, the new default environment is pretty confusing until you get a feel for it, and even though you can go back to classic it's best to learn the new environment. Reason is if you are doing tech support, or even want to talk about Vista with a sighted person you will need to understand a bit of how Vista is laid out with the multipained views. many of the issues have work arounds. For example, even though run is not in start where it should Windows+r still takes you there which is quicker to get there anyway. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Hi Josh, As I have never tried Total Recorder I can't say weather or not it works. I'd say based on what I have seen you are limited to the microphone and line in jacks at this point for recording. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Damien, On the system I installed Vista to there is no way to record from the wave out mix as before. The only way I can see that one could record game reviews or other content like that is via a microphone, or use XP on a separate computer to do it. Now, I am not sure weather this is do the the fact Vista's drivers are all very experimental and not as full featured as we would all hope, or this feature is something that is absolutely dropped. What I can say is midi support for musicians etc is gone as well, and since I am one myself I am pretty ticked about that. I am hoping this is added in the next patches, updates, and or service packs. ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Yohandy, It would appear to be so. I have checked my Vista mixer settings twice and the only recording devices supported and or available is the line in jack and the microphone. No others midi, wave out mix, etc is even listed. That is going to hurt game reviews and podcasts I think. As for weather or not you can pick your OS I'd say systems with XP should be available for the next six months or so, but with the big drive to go Vista most companies already are starting to put out all new computers with Vista on them. I've seen some Del comercials selling new systems with Vista and my local Wal-Mart has some Compaqs and HP systems with Vista, and the XP ones going over to the sell or throw away pile. I don't know how soon or late it wilol take to faze out the XP systems, but fact is Vista is only three weeks old, and my local stores are putting the XP boxes over in the sell or scrap pile. Yohandy wrote: It's gone? Incredible! I'm never upgrading to Vista. Does anyone know if we're forced to upgrade when buying a new computer, or can we request XP instead? ___ Gamers mailing list .. Hi, No, they aren't likely to. My guess it will return if enough normal, (sighted users,) complain about it, and want it back. damien c. sadler - head of x-sight interactive wrote: i don't think microsoft will listen to 200 of 200 people that may use it. regards, damien ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Josh, Perhaps, but with Vista's DRM, (digital rights management,) and strict control over the hardware it is probably less likely to do that. Vista is a control freque when it comes to managing it's hardware and sharing access with any unknown outside party. I use to think 2000 and XP were control ffreaks when MS introduced the hardware access layer, but the situation only has compounded and gotten more so under Vista. The point is I am not sure the Windows mixer is likely to relinquish it's control over your sound card for a third-party solution to handle that. I have heard that every program has its own volume control including the main controls. This may mean that there could be vertual mixers but how I don't know. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
thats one thing I don't want. I doubt I will upgrade. Saying that the windows midi synth is just a half cock roland synth, I have a yamaha xg old synth and a old vsc roland synth. So maybe that part will not be so bad. At 07:05 p.m. 28/02/2007, you wrote: Hi Damien, On the system I installed Vista to there is no way to record from the wave out mix as before. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Shaun, I am certain Microsoft will offer XP with SP3 disks, but they will likely turn out to be like Win 2000. You'll be able to buy them to upgrade existing XP and 2000 systems, but all new PCS from Gateway, Del, HP, Compaq, etc will be shipping with Vista. shaun everiss wrote: what about the service packs for xp, i presume ms will sell xp with the latest sp3 and later sp4? ___ Gamers mailing list .. Re: [Audyssey] Windows Vista In Review
Hi Shaun, Well, one tthought that comes to mind is perhaps just writing a better device driver for said sound card with that support is one option. Either that of if someone could make a mixer device option for the mixer All hard to say at this point. shaun everiss wrote: I have heard that every program has its own volume control including the main controls.
