Hi Daniel: I have participated in GSoC as a mentor in 2005 and 2006 but in recent years have not participated due to difficulty in getting selected as a mentoring organization.
My sense is that unless you are one of the big umbrella projects such as Apache or Debian, it is almost impossible to get picked. I definitely think GSoC is a worthwhile endeavour and I would be willing to help as mentor and/or administrator. We could certainly drum up some interesting projects for students. Please let me know if you are interested in putting together an application for Ganglia -- I would be willing to help. The deadline for Mentoring Organization application is 2/14.
