Feel the way it fills you to overflowing, then reach out and give it away. Give it back to the person who brought it alive in you. Give it to others who deem it poor in spirit. Give it to the world around you in anyway you can. There is where many lovers go wrong. Having been so long without love, they understand love only as a need. They see their hearts as empty places that will be filled by love, and they begin to look at love as something that flows to them rather than from them. The first blush of new love is filled to overflowing, but as their love cools, they revert to seeing their love as need. They cease to be someone who generates love and instead become someone who seeks love. They forget that the secret of love is that it is a gift, and that it can be made to grow only by giving it away. Remember this, and keep it to your heart. Love has its own time, its own seasons, and its own reason for coming and going. You cannot bribe it or coerce it, or reason it into staying. You can only embrace it when it arrives and give it away when it comes to you. But if it chooses to leave from your heart or from the heart of your lover, there is nothing you can do and there is nothing you should do. Love always has been and always will be a mystery. Dear All, Some 10-12 days ago i had a chance to see my brother nikhil. I had posted what i felt about the film on various lists. Now that the film is just 2 days away from release ( it opens in india on 25th march 2005) and with a host of who's who promoting the film in the media i thought i could re-post what i felt about the film. This is one film that no one should miss ( straight or gay does not matter ) Infact we should carry forward the present ad campaign I care for my brother nikhil...do you ? and one way of showing care is to shamelessly promote an honest movie. I am also posting an interview with the direcor of the film Onir at the end of this mail. Vivek My brother Nikhil A Brave Effort If Phir Milenge was the beginning, with My Brother Nikhil Indian cinema has finally arrived as an industy that has matured, grown up and is capable of handling sensitive and taboo subjects and give them a rare dignity. Phir Milenge was the story of Tamanna Sawhney who tests HIV positive and My brother Nikhil is the story of Anamika's (Juhi Chawla) brother Nikhil who is HIV positive. The similarity between the two films end there. My brother Nikhil is an effort to bring to light taboo issues that our society refuses to address. A major chunk of the story is set in 1980's when no one spoke about HIV but anybody who tested HIV positive had AIDS ! The films made in hindi language talks about growing up gay in Goa, about not being able to come out to family or friends, about struggling to avoid marriage with a woman for Nikhil is gay and in love with another man, about discrimination faced from the society when his HIV status is leaked out , about ancient discriminatory laws that Nikhil being quarantined for three months, about the struggle to get him out and how in the process people close to Nikhil start working for the cause of HIV positive people. The most amazing part of the script is that the director brings out all these issues without even having use the word gay or activist which is a major triumph for a debutant director. What lends credence to the film are performances from its entire cast. Victor Banerjee as Nikhil's father, a man who is hell bent upon making a MAN out of his son, an absolute no nonsense person who eventually breaks down before a submissive wife scores high honours for coming across as a dad whom Nikhil loved and who was his role model. Lillette Dubey as Nikhil's mother is in full form once again and though one wondered why she never took a stand despite being a submissive wife comes out with a performance that she will be proud of.. Gautam Kapoor plays Sam,Anupama's fiancée and looks a little ill at ease playing the usual understanding lover. His is one character that gives you the feeling that the scriptwriter took for granted. A special mention should be made about Shweta Kwatra as lawyer Anjali who fights for Nikhil and his rights to live like any other normal human being. My brother Nikhil is a major triumph for three actors. Purab Kohli as Nigel playing Nikhil's lover has worked extremely hard on his character giving it the right mix of a gay man who is androgynous and comfortable with his sexuality and is fighting for his right place in his lover's life and as an actor has been successful in his effort. Juhi Chawla as Anamika playing Nikhil's sister and soul mate delivers a knock out performance and lightens up the screen by her sheer presence. Eventually My brother Nikhil is a showcase of talent for Sanjay Suri who plays Nikhil, a man who is not comfortable with his sexuality but not willing to give up his relationship with Nigel, an ordinary man who is charming, witty, affable, irritable , angry, sad, grief stricken about his HIV status but continues to fight and live life and Sanjay does all of it with such rare ease and comfort like he was not an actor but Nikhil himself and he is one of biggest scoring points of the film. The film has one song Le Chale...Le Chale sung by Shaan, Sunidhi and KK and picturised in various situations adds to the mood but the film eventually belongs to debutant director Onir for showing courage in taking up a subject and not compromising on it. The film presented through various characters who were closely associated with Nikhil represent the view point of a director who has arrived with his very first film. I am posting an interview with the director of the film which appeared on rediff and here it goes. How Onir made Karan Johar cry! March 23, 2005 OnirOnir, or Onirban as his birth certificate reads, is probably the most unassuming director you can come across. In a black T-shirt and faded jeans, he's easy to miss, especially at a suburban Mumbai café, where Bollywood wannabes are a dime a dozen. Hello, I m happily married with 2 kids. Bombay Dost Sunday High Movie screening--No Ordinary Love GENRE: Romance/Drama LENGTH: About 1 hour 45 minutes. REVIEWS (from Amazon.com): Actually, the many loves, and types of love, contained in this little film are quite 'ordinary' and happen every day. They just don't usually make it to the big, or little, screen. We have a guy who owns a house. He can't come out because his mother fantasizes that he will get married one day. He rents rooms to a female in a rock band (with whom he, and just about everyone else, has an affair; a dead guy; a narcissistic (and justifiably so) actor who likes it both ways; a cute little Asian boy; and an over-weight bank teller. The movie must be viewed as a self-contained soap opera, considering the myriad twists of plot and sub-plot, which involves the usual betrayal, bank robbery, adultery, and murder. The nicest facet of the story is the developing romance between Vince (the Asian boy) and his 'straight' hispanic neighbor, Ramon -- who is also the son of an abusive father (upon whom his mother is cheating with Andy, the narcissistic actor!). The only two who have any integrity in the film are Ramon and Vince, and they are amply rewarded at the end. Probably only deserves three stars, but the people are cute enough to bump it up to four. And it's just nice to see a film where there is a natural variety of sexual preference. It's not SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, but it is fun. Hot teen actors and crazy plot makes this no ordinary movie This film is amazing! It's full of technical flaws, especially poor editing, that disclose inexperience on the part of its makers. But surprise after surprise, it all comes together beautifully on an entertainment and emotional level. Most of the actors are very good, but for me it was Ramon and Vince that I enjoyed most. These two are really hot, both in looks, but more important, as actors. The dream sequence and the awakening to reality by Vince is probably the most moving part of the film, wonderfully expressed by the actors and director. Also, whoever wrote the script has a real feel for human emotions.A wonderful find for me. Forget the technical and plot craziness and see it! Screening Details DATE: Sunday, March 27, 2005.
