A revolutionary poem, that has been described as an ode to gay love and
one of the defining moments of modern literature, will be celebrated today
in Leeds.Howl, by Allen Ginsberg, was first unveiled at a
notorious reading in the Six Gallery in San Francisco 50 years ago
today.Starting with the now infamous line “I saw the best minds of
my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked”, the poem
toured through the beat generation’s “angelheaded hipsters” and became a
‘Year Zero’ moment for modern writers.Ginsberg, who wrote poems
that dealt with sexuality openly for the first times, later became a
campaigner for gay and civil rights until his death in 1997.The
poem, an epic litany, will be celebrated by the University of Leeds
tonight with a series of readings, music and celebrations. As well
as a reading of the first section of the poem, organisers will present a
reflection of the poetry through a series of specially composed musical
responses to the poem; a pair of dramatic monologues utilising the eye
witness descriptions of Jack Kerouac and fellow poet Michael McClure; and
artworks reflecting the time, the place and the piece.Entitled
Howl for Now, the evening will also look into the resonance of the poem in
modern society.A book looking into the poem’s impact will also be
published today by Route publishers.“Written from the edge of
despair, this poem brought hope, light, possibility and acceptability to
an emerging new consciousness,” Route editor Ian Daley said. “This
poem opened a door for Ginsberg’s own generation which subsequent
generations have continued to walk through"The celebrations will
take place at 6.30pm in the Clothworkers’ Centenary Concert Hall at the
  University of Leeds.

RE: g_b This is what dreams are made of...

2005-10-07 Thread Sweet Angel

Very touching.
Thanks for sharing.
All the best too!

From: "utkarsh" [EMAIL PROTECTED]Reply-To: Following is a story written by me. Do let me know what you thinkabout it.Regards,Utkarsh.I have never been a winner. Always on the outskirts, never there, never on spot. Throughout my school years, I used to be in the topfew; college was not much different. So, when my room mate confessedin me that he is so totally smitten by my friend Aarif, I thought tomyself – "there you go again!".Krishna Nathanial Parker, my flat mate for the past one year and sevenmonths is a nice bloke. He is lucky in love in a very unlucky sort ofway. A guy he likes is very likely to be already in
love with him. Butsomehow things have never worked out for him. He has had 5 serious andmany non serious affairs. That's a lot considering his age of 23 years.Krish was born to British father Indian mother. I advertised for agay flat mate on the net and of the 3 guys I had short listed Krishwas the most eligible of them. Born and brought up in Liverpool; atalented musician who dreams of making it big in Bollywood; hadalready been in India for 2 years when we met; Kind and humble andvery brainy (sort of); also beautiful. So, he moved in with me. We hadthis understanding from the beginning that we will keep our personallives to ourselves. Sigh! Only I have no personal life to keep fromothers. So, Krish moved in with me and we were doing well. He kept tohis room mostly and I didn't miss him much when he was not around.I
CANNOT go on a date with a stranger. It just freaks me out. I triedgoing against my instincts once - made a complete fool of myself – andreturned home with a bruised and battered dignity. So advertising fora roommate was like participating in Fear Factor - like being jailedin a 3x3 box with 2 dozen fat rats. Not that disgusting, butdefinitely as fearsome. My friend Aarif egged me to do so.Now Aarif… is another story. He's my oldest friend and the only personin my world who knows I am homosexual. I came out to him after thefiasco that my first date was, almost two and a half years ago. Ireturned from the date all sad and depressed… and there he was, waiting for me all "EARS" to know about the hot girl I had describedto him. I was so humiliated, I couldn't help but cry. And when hetried making me feel better my crying grew even louder. He
kept sayingthings like "there are more girls out there and definitely kinder thanthe one I had just met". I felt the need of telling him the truthabout me. Looking at his concern I felt as if I was cheating him.Sometime during that night when I was not crying anymore I came out tohim. He took it in his stride. Up till that day he had been out of mycircle of eligible boyfriends. After that day I started looking at himfrom a different angle – the dream angle – where I and he livedhappily ever after. Sigh!I never saw Krish as a competitor. He is the ideal gay guy. Verycomfortable with himself, out to every one he knows. He would nevereven think of getting serious about a homosexual, who is in denial ora bisexual, leave alone a straight guy. So, I had Aarif all to myself.Every day I was falling more and more in love with Aarif. His
words ofkindness, his humility, his supportiveness and care, his protectiveattitude towards me and his loyalty to me as a friend – everything wastaking me closer and closer to him. My dreams included a penthouseapartment on Worli sea face, with a large terrace where we would haveour coffee in the morning – his black and strong and mine with sugar milk. Throughout the course of the day I'd drift into my own worldseveral times. I'd dream about different things like – the two of uson a trip to Italy; Venice, Rome, Verona and then moving on toAustria; the two of us talking to our friend Wasiqun, discussing theissues involved in her becoming a surrogate for our baby; the two ofus going to meet his parents and they treating me as their second sonwhich they never had; the two of us lamenting over the fact that wecan not have a joint
account; the two of us toiling over a SeniorChocolate Avalanche at Mocha, after we have downed the Dutch truffleshake and the brownie shake. Yum!A couple of months after Krish moved in with me I gave a party whereKrish met Aarif for the first time. They hit it off from the verybeginning. Much to my discomfort, they talked through out the party. After the party the three of us were together many times – mostly oninsistence of Krish. They traversed the distance between friendlyacquaintances to good friends pretty quickly. Like within a couple ofweeks. This became a matter of grave concern to me. My only respitewas in the fact that Krish would never fall for a straight guy andAarif is not gay, not even bisexual. Still, whenever I saw Krishgetting comfy with Aarif I felt like going up to him and hitting sohard in his balls that they come
sputtering out of his mouth. Then one day all of the sudden Krish confessed in me "I think I havedeveloped

Re: g_b Why are we gay?

2005-10-07 Thread jay
It's been a fantastic week for we nosey foreigners reading the
various posts about gay identity from the emerging Indian gay scene.
It is terribly heartening to see the sheer 'in your face' courage of
many of the contributors here, as they stand up for themselves in a
culture solidly rooted in patriacy and chauvanism.
My favourite windmill at which I tilt often, viciously and with (I
think) much justification, is that of organised religious bigotry.
But I have been so far disappointed with the lack of discussion
about the Hindu perspective on gays.
From the little contributed so far it seems that the Hindu
scriptures are rather ambivalent about the whole of poofter-anity.

We in western liberal societies fought these idealogical battles in
the 70's. In our own Australian parliament as late as the 90's,
right wing fundamentalist christian senators were still standing up
and declaring that the cure for homosexuality was the seduction of
the culprit by a well meaning, but promiscuous woman who
would 'cure' the gay of his affliction. This, from a well known
christian preacher and politician, just goes to prove to what
devious lengths religious zealots will go, in order to justify their
own bigotry.
My own boyfriend is muslim. The emerging gay-muslim organisations,
courageously face not only condemnation from their society and
religion, but sheer physical violence in order to 'decontaminate'
them from the liberalisation of the whole notion of individual
sexuality.
So it is with interest that we watch you Indian gays deal with the
same issues on your own terms, inside your own culture.

And lastly, just remember: If your God has the same prejudices as
you, it's very likely he was made in your own image.

John

g_b EVERYONE SHOULD PARTICIPATE

2005-10-07 Thread suhail khan

yesterday i went to gaybombay information site and there i learnt that there are approximately 9000+ membersin this group but still only few write or post messages, while others dont participate, i think if any one doesnt have anything to say, they can ofcourse take part in sending replies to any of the messages, i think not more than 100 take active participation, which is a very small number compared to 9000. please everyone do write what you think, and there is nothing to worry for as everyone is like-minded here in this group.
its great that some members ask for advices which many of us do give at our best, after all this group is meant to be a platform both safe and open for everyone to show up without any fear or hesitation.

g_b India’s Slow Descent Into Homophobia

2005-10-07 Thread Ketan_
India's Slow Descent Into Homophobia
By Amara Das Wilhelm

Ancient India's acceptance and accommodation of many forms of
eroticism within its culture, including homoeroticism, has been well
documented in early Sanskrit writings, art and architecture. This
makes modern-day India's sexual puritanism and homophobia, which
reached its zenith in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, all
the more astounding. In today's world, India has been relegated to
the level of the most backward countries in the sphere of personal
liberties, and one might wonder how such a drastic change could ever
have come about. Through careful examination, India's long and
troubled past reveals a gradual descent into puritanism and
homophobia due to caste consciousness and foreign religious
influence. The following is a brief timeline that summarizes the
history of India and its deteriorating attitude toward people of the
third sex.

Vedic India

Generally assumed to have ended with the dawn of the Kali Yuga age
or just over five thousand years ago. At this time, many forms of
sexuality are accommodated within India's native culture such as
polygamy, prostitution, sexually explicit art, courtesans, etc.
Homosexuality is recognized as a separate and third nature (tritiya-
prakriti). Third-gender citizens are fully incorporated into
society, most notably within the artisan and monastic communities.

Post-Vedic India

Vedic culture slowly declines over several thousands of years. A
strict caste system develops based on birth and body type, causing
the social structure to become very rigid. Priests are more
ritualistic and less humanistic. They are known as smarta-brahmanas
and become extremely arrogant and abusive of the lower classes,
declaring them untouchable. Scriptures such as the Manusmriti and
other ritualistic texts are corrupted during this time. The ancient
Vedic rites are misused, and sacrifices are employed as an excuse
for rampant animal slaughter.

The Buddhist Period

Beginning approximately 500 B.C., Buddhism gradually spreads
throughout India. Vedic culture has degraded to such an extent that
the population of India eagerly embraces Lord Buddha's teachings of
nonviolence and human equality. Buddhist teachings reject the Vedas,
and Buddhism itself reaches a peak in India around the time of
Christ.

The Gupta Period

This period begins about A.D. 300. The influence of Buddhism over
India gradually wanes and is eventually driven out by Sankaracarya,
who reinstates the authority of the Vedas. That authority is later
reinforced by other great acaryas such as Ramanuja and Madhva.
During this period, a renaissance of India's Vedic philosophy and
culture blossoms. Resurgence in the construction of Hindu temples
begins around the sixth century, where one invariably finds a
multitude of openly erotic images, including many depicting
homosexuality. The temples of Khajuraho and Chapri serve as striking
examples. The sage Vatsyayana also recompiles the Kama Shastra
during this time.

Islamic Invasions Begin

In the closing years of the tenth century, armed Islamic migrants
begin to move into Northern India from regions west of the Hindukush
Mountains such as Afghanistan and Persia. This starts an invasion
that culminates in the establishment of kingdoms in North India
ruled by Muslim overlords. The meeting of Islamic and Hindu cultures
is gradual, and each ethnic group flourishes. The construction of
Hindu temples climaxes between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries,
particularly in Southern India where Islamic influence remains
virtually non-existent.

Hindu-Muslim Coexistence

Originally confined to military centers, Muslim migrants carrying
Perso-Turko-Arabic traditions quickly disseminate into large
urbanized areas within Northern India. This is further accelerated
by a mass migration of scholars, poets and elite administrators from
other Islamic kingdoms to the west. These migrants are seeking
refuge from the depredations of the Mongols who are ravaging much of
Western Asia during this time. Hindus and Muslims coexist peacefully
during this period, and there is a great cultural exchange between
the two ethnic groups that lasts for centuries. Muslim clerics are
free to interpret religious doctrine according to their own
discretion and rarely punish homosexuality. On the contrary, it
flourishes and is well documented within popular poetry from that
time. Muslim migrants also introduce the Middle Eastern practice of
castration among homosexual slaves and servants. Domestic slavery
existed to a small extent in pre-Islamic India but now becomes an
enormously profitable enterprise. Early sultans are heavily
dependent on slaves as both soldiers and laborers. Alauddin Khalji
(1296—1316) of the Sultanate of Delhi, for instance, is recorded as
owning fifty thousand slaves, and Firuz Shah Tughlaq (1357—1388)
owned 180,000. Of these,
