g_b Dnyanapeeth Puraskaar

2006-01-11 Thread Just me
Wonder why this message did not appear on the list yet.

  Cheers,
  Sameer
Friends,

It gives me immense pleasure to write that a famous marathi poet-writer Vinda
Karandikar won the Dnyanapeeth Puraskaar for this year. There will be lots of
articles about him and his work in the journals for the days to come but one
point worth mentioning on these lists is he has financially helped various
social organizations in Maharashtra that work on projects on family planning,
HIV/AIDS awareness and enunch/hizda empowerment related work.

Congrats to Vinda for this accomplishment !!!

Cheers,
Sameer

g_b Salt Lake Tribune: Why 'Brokeback Mountain' is so frightening

2006-01-11 Thread adrianmalcolm
Title: Why 'Brokeback Mountain' is so frightening

This article was mailed to you by: AdrianThe sender included this message:An interesting article that could have been titled "Why Straight Men Homosexuality So Frightening "Click to View this ArticleWhy 'Brokeback Mountain' is so frighteningLeonard PittsSalt Lake TribuneI went to see ''Brokeback Mountain'' last week, mainly to prove to myself that I could.
This was after reading a New York Times piece by Larry David of ''Seinfeld'' and ''Curb Your Enthusiasm'' fame in which he wrote that, though he loves gay people and supports both gay marriage and gay divorce, he does not plan to see this critically praised movie about gay cowboys. David said he's discomfited by the idea of watching two men fall in love and fears it might make him gay by osmosis.
''Not,'' he added, ''that there's anything wrong with that.''
It strikes me that David's essay amounted to the smiley-face liberal version of what is being said more bluntly in conservative circles. ''Gay love story carries a high 'ick' factor'' reads the headline of a story on the American Family Association Web site. It quotes a prediction that people will leave the theater vomiting.
 How asinine, I think.
Yeah, says a little voice in my head, but if that's how you feel, why haven't you been to ''Brokeback Mountain''?
Now look, I say, and suddenly there's this wheedling tone to my voice, some of my best friends are gay. Heck, my own brother's gay. But you know, we are talking about a love story between two guys, and they might be kissing and, you know, touching and . . . stuff.
The little voice falls silent. It is a put-your-money-where-your-mouth-is silence.
So I went to see ''Brokeback.'' And I can report that it was as shattering and powerful as advertised. People were moved. Nobody threw up.
Which brings me back to that ick factor.
I find myself wondering if this primeval revulsion doesn't speak less to our antipathy toward homosexuality than to our fears about masculinity. I mean, while a movie about two women in love would surely be controversial, I doubt it would present the visceral threat ''Brokeback Mountain'' does for some of us. I doubt Larry David would be scared to see it.
Indeed, the idea of women who can't keep their hands off each other is a staple of so-called men's entertainment. Visit a magazine stand if you don't believe me.
Point being, when it's women, we - meaning straight men - tend to find it titillating, exotic, arousing in its very forbiddance. When it's men, we - meaning straight men and women - tend to react as if somebody dropped a snake in the bed. Small wonder the FBI reports that while 902 men were reported victims of sexual orientation hate crimes in 2004, only 212 women were.
We seem prone to find male homosexuality the more clear and present danger, the more urgent betrayal of some fundamental . . . something. Some will say it's - and I will finesse this for a general audience - the nature of man-to-man sex some of us find off-putting. I think it's more basic than that. I think gay men threaten our very conception of masculinity.
The amazing thing about ''Brokeback Mountain'' is its willingness to make that threat, directly and overtly. These are not cute gays, funny gays, ''Queer Eye for the Straight Guy'' gays. These are ''cowboys,'' and there is no figure in American lore more iconically male. Think Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, the Marlboro Man. The cowboy is our very embodiment of male virtues.
In offering us cowboys who are gay, then, ''Brokeback Mountain'' commits heresy, but it is knowing heresy, matter-of-fact heresy. Nor is it the sex (what little there is) that makes it heretical. Rather, it's the emotion, the fact that the movie dares you to deny these men their humanity. Or their love.
Ultimately, I think, that's what the Larry Davids among us sense. And why for them, ''Brokeback Mountain'' might be the most frightening movie ever made. This e-mail was initiated by machine [10.148.8.5] at IP [10.148.8.5].

g_b Thursday's Thought

2006-01-11 Thread asfan

One morning, a man approached the first tee, only to find another guy approaching from the other side. They began talking and decided to play 9 holes together. After teeing off, they sat off down the fairway, continuing their chat. "What do you do?" the first man asked. "I'm a salesman. What about you?" "I'm a hitman for the mob," replied the second man. The hitman noticed that the 1st guy started getting a little nervous and continued. "Yeah.I'm the highest paid guy in the business. I'm the best." He stopped, sat down his bag of clubs and pulled out a fancy, high-powered rifle that was loaded with all types of scopes and sights. He then asked the man where he lived.Still nervous the man
replied, "In a subdivision just west of here." The hitman placed the gun against his shoulder, faced west, peered into a scope and asked "What colour roof ya' got?""Grey." Then he asked "What colour siding?" "Yellow." "You got a silver Toyota?" "Yeah,"replied the first man who was now completely amazed by the accuracy of the hitman's equipment. "That's my wife's car." "That your red pickup next to it?"Looking baffled the man asked if he could look through the scope. Looking through the sights, he said "Hell. That's my buddy Jeff's truck. "What the hell is he doing there if I'm..?" The hitman looked through the scope once more. "Your wife a blond?" "Yeah." "Your buddy got black hair?" "Yeah!" "Well, I don't know how to tell you, but I think you've got a problem. They're going at it like a couple of teenagers in there." said the hitman. "Problem??! THEY'VE got the problem! I want you to shoot both of them Right now!"The hitman paused and said, "Sure. But it'll cost
you. Like I said, I'm the best. I get paid 5,000 per shot." "I don't care! Just do it! I want you to shoot her right in the head, then shoot him right in the balls!"The hitman agreed, turned, and took firing position. He carefully stared into the sights, taking careful aim. He then said, "You know what buddy. This is your lucky day. I think I can save you 5,000!"

g_b Raising Tom ...

2006-01-11 Thread ridgeet roy

As a single GAY parent, or as a couple, does one dread that moment when the explanantion about dad and dad, or mom and mom, is due? I remember asking someone if it had been difficult explaining to his adolescent daughter whothose uncles were, the ones who often spend the night in dad's room. And indeed it was. Atleast with your parents, you can understand what their reaction can be. But with the impressionable and developing minds, you are clueless. Come what may, you need to tell them at one point of time. Lets see, as a single gay parent, maybe one needs to be a bit careful about what one does around the house. Especially till the time is right for the child to understand. An open heart to heart conversation, and a convincing confident positive attitude showing that one doesnt change either way, definitely helps.
Probably what is more important is that you need to show that you trust your child, because if you are hesitant, chances are that the child also might not understand and respond. But it is extremely important for you toconsult a child psychologist first. Whether as a couple, or as single, you must rely on expert advise. It might help if you are lucky enough to have your parents and friends to support you, as that will give the child confidence and faith in you; but if you dont have, doesnt matter. You still need to take a chance.Remember the movie birdcage. Who knows, maybe, you might be as lucky as Nathan Lane's character...Raising a child is difficult for any parent, be it gay or straight. But it is not the sexuality of the parent that assures the wholistic development of
the child, it is the stability, security and unconditional love that they provide. And if you have that, no force in the world can make anything go wrong... and they will grow up just fineRij
