Several times a week I receive messages, via my social networking page,
that can only be described as utterly asinine. According to the
Merriam-Webster Dictionary, asinine is an adjective that means extremely or
utterly foolish. Asinine comes from the Latin word asininus, which,
translated in English means relating to, or resembling an ass. Did you catch
that? Asinine is just another word for a stupid ass! CLICK HERE TO READ

Two parents take their son on a vacation to a nude beach. The father goes for a
walk on the beach, and the son goes and plays in the water. The son comes
running up to his mom and
says, Mommy, I saw ladies with breasts a lot bigger than yours!
The mom says, The bigger they are, the dumber they are.
Minutes later, he runs back and says, Mommy, I saw men with penises a lot
bigger than Daddy's!
The mom says, The bigger they are, the dumber they are.
So he goes back to play.
Several minutes later, he comes running back and says. Mommy, I just saw Daddy
talking to the
dumbest lady I ever saw, and the more they talked, the dumber he got!

  To India, with love
Author: Reshma Jain Date: 13 Jan 2008

*Juan ran a restaurant at Ibiza, Eshel grew up in a kibbutz in Israel.
Here's the extraordinary story of how this couple found love in India and
their enduring affair with the country*
Juan (sitting) and Eshel Herzhog share some happy moments
 Pic/Bipin Kokate

Far far away, in a restaurant on the island of Ibiza in Spain one evening
four years ago, a young Indian lady did a tarot card reading for Juan
prophesising, A big change is going to happen in your life. Just go to
India.

Normally, this restaurant manager would have forgotten all about it. But
surprisingly, with each passing day, his urge to go to India just kept
growing until he finally decided to follow his heart.

The night before he left for India Juan (pronounced as 'kwan') had an
elephant god he had never seen before beckoning him in his dreams.

Ten days later, he was in India, in Hampi when he saw this huge statue of
Ganesha and immediately recognised him from his dreams. Instinctively, he
went down on his knees in front of the idol, offering his prayers and asking
for protection and for love to come his way. Almost that very instant;
literally, he walked into his companion for the next four years and his love
— Eshel Herzhog.

The couple believe that Ganesha has blessed their relationship. Both had
only broken English as their communication and a strong karmic pull. Both
had come from different parts of the world — Juan is from Spain and Eshel
from Israel, both were pursuing spiritual travel, both were content being
alone, both had gone through their very personal journeys separately and
both continued their soul searching even after their initial meeting. Eshel
did a one-month course in yoga at Varanasi, while Juan did a course in
McLeodganj near Dharamshala.

Both did Vipassana at Dehradun in the course of a month apart.

Eshel says, Vipassana meditation makes you more focused, cleaner and by the
end of it, we knew we were in love. It was such a good connection – that
'once-in-a-lifetime' feeling. We went in it with a lot of courage and
stupidity. India played the perfect background. It gave us the ability to
recognize each other and connect.

A life together

Within a month of their return from India, not only were they meeting each
others families but actually bridging broken ties. The same father who had
disowned his gay son Juan for 11 years, helped him buy a house for them to
move in together in Barcelona.

Not only was it difficult moving between different countries, but the two
also came from diverse behavioral patterns.

Eshel has spent the first 15 years of his life in a conservative kibbutz in
Israel where everyone knew everyone, while Juan comes from a robust and
dramatic close knit Spanish family in Barcelona. With Juan's family, Eshel
got used to eating sea food which is 'not kosher' and Juan learnt to
understand that 'giving space' has nothing to do with lack of love.

Eshel learnt Spanish and continued to achieve his masters degree in social
work, while Juan managed a restaurant on the beach in Ibiza.

The Indian way

A few weeks back; Juan popped the magical question to Eshel — marriage dates
were fixed for October 2008, but of course it had to be solemnized in India.
As both Judaism and Catholicism do not accept their marriage, they decided
in having a mix of Indian rituals mixed with their own vows.

As Juan says, Since we had found love here, we had this childish dream of
wearing these princely Indian outfits for our wedding day. So here they
were back again, buying their wedding rings from Jaipur and sherwanis from
Pushkar.

Their bags contained churidaar kurtas, sherwanis and lehengas for their
nieces (the girls will hold their rings at the wedding ceremony) and a whole
bunch of comfy kurtas to wear on their honeymoon.

Their one gripe with Indians is over their dressing sense. They adore Indian
fashion and cannot fathom why Indians wear European cuts. India needs to be
more comfortable in her own clothes, says Eshel.

Circle of life

Watching them talk is like watching a 'pas de deux' (a dance of two). Juan
will start a conversation and Eshel completes it without a skip or change in
the
narrative style — they are so in sync.

The two also came here to close a circle. In their first trip, they had
traveled separately and so this trip, they traveled together. Shopping for
their entire family, spending days with tailors, goldsmiths and sharing
their version of India and Indianness.

So is India different four years later? Both simultaneously shout, We love
India! The diversity, the extremes between modern and conservative and
thousands and thousands of gods and yet this feel of one divine hand.
Everyday travelling a train or a bus is a struggle, traffic, rickshaw
drivers and bargaining leaves us tired. But both of us have learnt here not
to plan too much, to accept whatever is and that has made our love even more
stronger.

A changing India

Mr. Gay contest 2008 http://www.mrgaycompetition.com/ results are out.
India is not the winner. 33 year old Carlos Fabian Melia from Argentina is.
However for the Indian gay community and other gender benders, Indian
contestant, 26 year old Mumbai based model Zoltan Parag is no less than a
winner. Zoltan may not have won the contest but he sure did make a lot of us
proud.

I admire Zolan's guts to come out with his sexuality and to be the first
Indian to participate any such contest given that he might well be booked
under the criminal law of the country. Many at the contest thought Zoltan
stood a good chance merely because of his courage alone.

[image: india1.jpg] http://sanjukta.wordpress.com/files/2008/01/india1.jpg

I wanted to know more about Zoltan so googled for him. Used various
combinations, but couldn't find any significant information except a few
repetitive lines. Found this blog
posthttp://pranaadhika.blogspot.com/2008/01/bullshit.htmlwhere the
author has spoken about Poornima Advani's
homophobia http://psychology.ucdavis.edu/rainbow/html/prej_defn.html and
found a few news articlehttp://groundreport.com/article.php?articleID=2853249
.

Being a new media evangelist, I expected this invisible section of our
society to express themselves freely through blogs. But I couldn't found
many quality blogs to be honest. One reason could be that they are yet to
explore blogs as a medium. The other of course is the social stigma behind
being homosexual.

Indian homosexuals are an invisible bunch of people. Coming out with
homo-sexuality is threatened with criminal prosecution and social ostracism.

*Section 377 of the IPC* criminalize homosexuality. Not in that term but in
effect. It reads,

'Whoever has carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man,
woman or animal, shall be punished with imprisonment for life'.

The words *against the order of nature *can be interpreted in a number of
ways but is mostly interpreted as anal sex. It also penalizes sexual acts
like oral sex, regardless of whether it is heterosexual or homosexual; even
penile-masturbation of one person by another – is considered criminal
(basically they wanted to penalize everything that is not the missionary /
Victorian penile vaginal penetration meant for procreation)

A non legal person often wonders, 'how would the law (police, court) ever
find out what two people are doing behind the closed doors?' The thing about
criminal law is that, a prosecution can be initiated on a third party
complaint. Which means even if the person reporting the crime has got
nothing to do with the victim or the oppressor the police is bound to take
an action. And the *third* party complaint might well be by the *police*itself.

In some of the most horrendous incidents of police brutalities, queers from
the lower class and caste have been humiliated and tortured by conducting
anal inspection on them to determine if the said crime have been committed.
For the police, one of the easiest way to extort money out of a gay couple
hanging around the Ulsoor Lake area would be - a threat to arrest under this
section. Funnily, there have been reports of gay sex workers being raped by
hetero-sexual police *'men.'*

It was only recently that queer activists in India raised a protest against
this 150 year old law introduced by the British Raj. In December 2002 Naz
Foundation http://www.nazindia.org/index.htm filed a Public Interest
Litigation (PIL) to challenge the section in the Delhi High Court on the
grounds that, by prohibiting private, consensual sex, the section violates
the right to privacy.

It has been a long standing trend, not only just in India but all across the
Globe, to wrap rights related to sexuality under some health issue before
they can be sought and lobbied for.

For the first time, through this petition, a right based approach have been
taken in queer activism. The text of the petition and other legal
developments can be found in Lawyer's Collective's website
here.http://www.lawyerscollective.org/content/anti-sodomy-law-0The
petition got significant support from various Delhi based NGOs who
eventually formed into a coalition called Voices Against
377http://www.voicesagainst377.org/

The social ostracism queers have to face is even worse than police torture.
There prevails a blanket homo-phobia in the society, more particularly
amongst patriarchal hetero sexual man whose man hood is his honour (which
basically is in his D*$). This 'man' refuses to recognize a gay as 'man'. A
gay is called by names, looked down upon, made fun of, looked at with
suspicion. For an heterosexual man the idea that a man can be physically
attracted to another man is scary and disgusting. I often hear they say, *what
if he feels me up*

And I am
