g_b Chicken A La Carte by Ferdinand Dimadura
When I watched the short film Chicken A La Carte by Ferdinand Dimadura http://www.symphonyoflove.net/blog/620/chicken-a-la-carte-by-ferdinand-\ dimadura.html , I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it was quite sad to think about all the children going hungry in the world and not only in the Philippines where this video was filmed. The feeling of hunger can never be understood by most as most of us have food readily served to us. In a way we may have taken for granted for the food put on the table. And yet the same food on the table will be a luxury to many children who may never experience a proper meal. On the other hand, I was quite touched by what the man did in the short film. The smiles on the faces of the children were priceless. How fortunate we are ... don't you think so?

g_b Donkeys do sprout Wings: Cheney Supports Gay Marriage
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/05/AR2009060503423.html Saturday, June 6, 2009 *Cheney Supports Gay Marriage* ** Former vice president Dick Cheney this week voiced his support for same-sex marriage, as long as it is handled by the states and not the federal government. Cheney, whose daughter has a longtime female partner, said at the National Press Club that people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish. His position appears to place him to the left of President Obama, who has said that he supports civil unions, rather than marriage, for gay men and lesbians. The question is whether Cheney's support will make any difference in the same-sex marriage debate. Will it pull more Christian conservatives into the pro-gay-marriage camp? The Human Rights Campaign, a gay rights group, welcomed Cheney's comments through gritted teeth. It is unfortunate that it took the former vice president two terms in office, two terms that were the most anti-LGBT in history, before he decided to stand up for equality, said Joe Solmonese, president of the HRC. That being said, we welcome his voice to the table on this issue and hope the remaining right-wing opponents of marriage equality see how completely out of touch they have become. **

g_b DNA News: complaint about a gay husband and his partner.
Hi guys, I read in an article that a wife of a Peddar Road businessman complained to Gamdevi Police Station that her husband was gay and he alongwith his boyfriend were harassing and intimidating her. The Gamdevi police booked the husband and his partner under 377 (what else?) and 498(a). What's interesting is this IPC 498(a) is about cruelty against women by relatives of husband... HAHAHA !!! g_b VOTE ON GAY MARRIAGE
THE NEW YORK TIMES June 4, 2009 Editorial VOTE ON GAY MARRIAGE Six states have now made it legal for same-sex couples to marry. New York is not one of them. Gov. David Paterson wants the state to guarantee that right, and the protections that come with it, and the Assembly approved legislation legalizing same-sex marriage last month. Malcolm Smith, the leader of the State Senate, insists that he, too, favors marriage for gay couples, but he won’t let a bill go to the floor unless he’s privately lined up enough votes. It is time for Mr. Smith and his fellow senators to decide this important matter in public. There are few new arguments to be made behind closed doors. By now, the Senate’s 62 members have heard from every interest group. They know the polls and the politics. They know that New York is lagging behind others — including New Hampshire, where Gov. John Lynch, who had previously defined marriage as strictly between a man and a woman, signed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage on Wednesday. And if New York’s Assembly is any guide, once the matter comes to the floor, these senators will also recognize that same-sex marriage is a basic civil right that can no longer be denied to the citizens of this state. Thomas Duane, the lead senator on this bill, argues that ultimately his colleagues will see the issue clearly, both in theory and in their personal experiences. He says that most lawmakers, like most Americans, either have a gay family member or know a gay couple down the street or a gay co-worker in their office or some of the many gay lawyers, doctors, politicians and journalists in their community. “How can they look these people in the eye and not want to treat them equally?” Mr. Duane said. “How can they look me in the eye?” Christine Quinn, the speaker of the New York City Council, who also has been in Albany working in favor of the same-sex marriage bill, offers another reason why a public vote is necessary. “History will record what all of us do on this issue,” she said. “This is one of those moments when you should want to be counted.” New York’s Legislature has about two more weeks left in this year’s session. Its work will not be done until the Senate publicly debates and then votes to legalize same-sex marriage. Share files, take polls, and make new friends - all under one roof. g_b Gay student voted prom queen: Crossposted from BOB
-- Forwarded message -- From: [BoysOnlyBangladesh] Gasy student voted prom queen Gay Student Voted Prom Queen: An openly gay teen has been voted prom queen at his Los Angeles high school in a campaign that began as a stunt but ended up spurring discussion on the campus about gender roles and popularity. Sergio Garcia said he felt invincible when he was crowned queen of the Fairfax High School dance at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel on Saturday. Days before the dance, Garcia told fellow students that he was not your typical prom queen candidate. There's more to me than meets the eye. He also promised that he would be wearing a suit on prom night, but don't be fooled: Deep down, I am a queen. And he made good of that promise Saturday, wearing a gray tuxedo topped off with the prized tiara. Garcia, 18, said he saw fliers advertising the prom and the election but they didn't specify that the queen must be female. He thought the role would suit him better than prom king. I don't wish to be a girl, he told the Los Angeles Times. I just wish to be myself. Senior class president Vanessa Lo said she and other students were initially against the idea but became convinced he wasn't just an attention-seeking clown. It just goes to show how open-minded our class is, Lo said. Unique Payne, 17, said she voted for Garcia because she supported the gay community. Although many students were supportive of Garcia's run, others were upset and didn't understand why Garcia chose to run for prom queen. I'm not really happy about that, said 17-year-old Juan Espinoza. He should've run for prom king. source:yahoo boysonlybangladesh-unsubscr...@yahoogroups.com?subject= Recent Activity - 11 New Membershttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/BoysOnlyBangladesh/members;_ylc=X3oDMTJmYWl2NTdxBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzkwNTY3ODgEZ3Jwc3BJZAMxNzA1MDgzNzY0BHNlYwN2dGwEc2xrA3ZtYnJzBHN0aW1lAzEyNDM4NDQ2NTA- - 1 New Photoshttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/BoysOnlyBangladesh/spnew;_ylc=X3oDMTJmZjhvNnU1BF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzkwNTY3ODgEZ3Jwc3BJZAMxNzA1MDgzNzY0BHNlYwN2dGwEc2xrA3ZwaG90BHN0aW1lAzEyNDM4NDQ2NTA- Visit Your Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BoysOnlyBangladesh;_ylc=X3oDMTJlbDVhODAwBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzkwNTY3ODgEZ3Jwc3BJZAMxNzA1MDgzNzY0BHNlYwN2dGwEc2xrA3ZnaHAEc3RpbWUDMTI0Mzg0NDY1MA-- Yahoo! g_b The GB meet at Mulund last sunday
The universe started with chaos ……and there was no reason for the meet not to start with confusions J! The meet started with multiple waiting points, lots of directing and redirecting those who were coming newly, with a majority turning up at the new place, as we waited to pick up any who would have come to the earlier place …..and were rewarded (FA… the CCD guy served us (he alone makes it worth the coffee at CCD :-D ) and we collected someone too :p) Reaching the venue, it was already a packed house with some 25+ppl already in, with lots of new faces in the crowd. After the routine formal round of introduction was done with, we got around to talk. As usual we had not brought a pre determined topic so as to talk on something on someone’s mind. The newbies started off the talk by sharing what had made them take the step towards coming in for a meet, …. some who had started coming after being on the mailing list for several years, some having heard of it on the train or through other friends. The reasons ranged from seeking out for a relation or friends or just a group where one can be himself. T talked about the picnic as we happily recounted the first time he had come as a doubting quiet introvertl and a now much more confident and confident person. GB has had a strict no sex on premises policy since inception. Should this be so? After all, if we do not stand against sex, if we can distribute condoms and lubes at parties earlier, why should sex be so strictly controlled at events was one question that came up. Nearly all felt that, though having sex is not unwelcome (who would seriously expect otherwise !), its best that we do not bring it in, as it would dilute the very reason of having a meet or get together which we have come for. “B” elaborated on this pretty well on why he would like to keep the events free from any hanky panky …….. of course there were hoots and interests when someone said there are other organisations to organize a “more intimate” event and a gb meet is something that caters to a very different thing for all and should be left so ( and then selfishly no one shared those vital information or other organisations K) The talk then turned to on the times when we have had support from such groups, with the host and others sharing some of their experiences and as we talked in general of the various groups that work on the LGBT front in Mumbai. One of the feedbacks that did come in was that during the meets we could organize small events other than just chatting up …. Maybe games or maybe some more serious discussion on issues facing each of us. This was something that all were unanimous about, and yeah….the effects should be at the next meet. Also that fact that the newbies should be offered more space to talk and get comfortable was brought out. It was observed by few that though many people do come with an intention to make friends (or maybe meet that special one), the hesitation in talking to strangers, or when both wait for the other to initiate conversation and continue it post the meet, is one of the key reasons of many to come and go back as alone. Personally, I think its perfectly normal to go and say a Hi to some one you would like to speak to…… rather these are the spaces that you know you can comfortably talk and not end up climbing a wrong tree and make friends …. If we keep going back without knowing anyone outside the meet, ….well it does defeat somewhat the purpose of the meet …..rt? (ofcourse keeping in mind that you do not start KkKiran :p ) Phew, it was getting a bit too serious by now (we R gay baby!) and we each of us recounted some embarrassing or funny incident when we had hit on a str8 (unsuccessfully). This part was fun as some recounted the incidents or hits and misses made. In between snacked on the spread of dhoklas and samosas and what not ….burp! With these and other small talks, it was getting near 9 by now and so we wound up ….taking another 20 minutes talking and chatting after the meet was declared over. Some of the guys headed for a dinner together while some headed back home or elsewhere :p Thanks a lot to the host, who really went to great pains to make us comfortable and burp well. Cheers Manoj. Read more about this at: http://screencrave.com/2009-06-02/gay-cinema-glbt-month/ == 5 Films that Inspire Equal Rights in Honor on GLBT Month By Guest Writerhttp://screencrave.com/author/guest-writer/ [image: pictures gay cinema]With the release of *Gus Van Santhttp://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001814/ *’s film *Milkhttp://screencrave.com/2008-11-25/review-milk-just-what-we-all-need/ * coinciding with the current issues of Prop 8, gay cinema was finally pushed into the forefront of everyones attention both on screen and off. Although this genre may be a very touchy subject, more and more directors and actors are choosing to embrace the ongoing pain of homosexual life. The month of June is *Gay Lesbian Pride Month* so in honor of that, we have put together a list of some of the most influential gay films which have helped inspire, educate, and encourage audiences to make a change and support equal rights. Take a look after the jump… 5. *Philadelphia (1993)* - *Philadelphia* is a great gay/Aids movie starring *Tom Hanks http://screencrave.com/tag/Tom-Hanks/*, *Denzel Washingtonhttp://screencrave.com/tag/Denzel-Washington/ * and *Antonio Banderas http://screencrave.com/tag/antonio-banderas/*. The film tells the story of Andrew Beckett (Hanks), a gay lawyer infected with AIDS who is fired from his law firm because his colleagues fear they might contract AIDs. This film is important because it was one of the first all-star casts, which could pull in big audiences, that tackled the issues of AIDs in the United States, and also introduced a more realistic picture of gays and lesbians. Although the film is about two gay lovers, the AIDs issue in the film was meant for everyone not only the gay, and it was the first time people thought about it that way on film. The film exploited the discrimination that gays and AIDs patients still undergo in our democratic society and began the change towards AIDs no longer with just the homosexual community but in all communities. Overall the film was very successful at the box office ($200 million worldwide) and in encouraging AIDS awareness and acceptance. Check out the trailer below . . . 4. *Bad Education (2004)* - A stand-out film by *Pedro Almodóvar*, about two childhood friends who discovered love and cinema as young pupils. The film deals with sexual abuse, trans-sexuality and gender abuse, and it is known for it’s nearly all-male cast and considered one of Almodóvar’s more serious films. The film doesn’t let anyone off the hook especially the Catholic church. It brings awareness to the sexual abuse happening in churches everywhere; from the priest to the young boys that spend there days inside the church. Overall it holds a powerful message that churches can be just as hypocritical as anyone. It’s better to be a good person than to say you’re a good person, and being gay doesn’t make you either. *Bad Education* received mixed reviews, but made over $40 million worldwide. Check out the trailer below. 3. *Fire (1996)* - Get’s points for a unique perspective on the gay community. *Fire* is the first Indian film to explicitly show homosexual relations, and after its release many right-wing Hindu groups violently protested against homosexuality. In the film, two daughters-in-law who were forced to marry into the family on an arranged marriage become lovers. The women go through some hardships, but end up together. Although many critics loved the film calling it “explosive” and “pathbreaking,” many were outraged by the explicit lesbian relationship shown in the film. There were many protest against the film, but gay activist *Ashok Row Kavi*criticized the protest as “gay bashing” and argued against lesbianism being against Indian tradition. Director of the film *Deepa Mehta* said in an interview about the film, “Fire is not a film about lesbians [but rather about] the choices we make in life.” Sounds like a good message for everyone. Check out the trailer below. 2. *Brokeback Mountain (2005)* - Why? Because this film is iconic. Perhaps the issues of homosexuality aren’t in the forefront as they are with some others but Ang Lee http://www.imdb.com/name/nm487/’s film consists of some of the finest performances (Heath Ledgerhttp://screencrave.com/tag/Heath-Ledger/andJake Gyllenhaalhttp://screencrave.com/tag/Jake-Gyllenhaal/) and an extremely personal exploration of the pain of hiding who one really is. The thing about *Brokeback Mountain* is that although it isn’t outwardly about gay rights, it’s about the misery of having to live in secret and denying one’s true self. Instead of taking an activist perspective, it went through the struggles of real people and shows how lying to oneself doesn’t make things better, it destroys lives. What could inspire more honest activism then a message like that? *Brokeback Mountain *made over $170 million worldwide and seemed to be well received by audiences all over. Check out the trailer below. 1. *Milk

g_b Article on Homophobia in Australia
Published on *newmatilda.com* (http://newmatilda.com) -- *2 Jun 2009* Homophobes At Home *It's easy for Australians to condemn gay-hating loonies like Fred Phelps, but many of us have more in common with Phelps than we'd like to admit, writes Tony Pitman* In 1999, I saw American History X with a white friend. The movie dealt with violent, neo-Nazi gangs and had been billed as a hard-hitting and controversial statement against racism. My friend was certainly impressed. Oh wow! she said as we left the cinema, Racism is just so terrible, isn’t it? I, on the other hand, was left feeling somewhat underwhelmed. It seemed to me that the filmmaker had chosen an easy target. Of course everyone’s going to come out saying that racism is a terrible thing — the people in the film are neo-Nazis for crying out loud. But if the director’s goal was actually to reduce racism in society, I don’t think he had much success, because depicting racism in such an extreme form doesn’t force people to reflect on their own more subtle racist attitudes. (A more effective film, for example, would have been one that examines why disasters always generate loads more media coverage if the victims are white and English-speaking.) My friend came out of the cinema decrying the evils of racism, but continued to hold the more insidious and unquestioned racist attitudes that occasionally became apparent in off-hand comments that she made. And I’m sure it was possible for millions of white people just like her to watch American History X and leave the cinema believing that racism was a terrible thing — believing that they themselves were not racist while still maintaining subtle forms of racism in their outlook. Which is exactly what I think happened with the Fred Phelps brouhahahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gAnwTWFuyIback in February, only that time it was homophobia that was exposed, not racism. Fred Phelps is the leader of a bizarre, fanatically homophobic Christian sect called the Westboro Baptist Church based in Topeka, Kansas. He and his small group of followers believe that God punishes humans for tolerating homosexuality on earth. Members of the sect travel throughout the United States to picket funerals and other events in an effort to convince people that the reason disaster has befallen them is because God is angry at the fag-enablers in their community who they believe have in some way tolerated the existence of homosexuality. On 16 February, the church announced its planshttp://theotherside.wordpress.com/2009/02/22/god-hates-australia/(since removed from their site) to travel to Melbourne to picket the National Day of Mourning at the Rod Laver arena. In a televised addresshttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=maeNk2itmMk, Fred Phelps stated that [t]he fag-infested land of Australia is burning. The fire of God’s wrath is sending hundreds of those filthy Australian beasts straight to hell. We at Westboro Baptist Church are rejoicing and we are praying for the dear Lord to burn many more Australians alive. A more offensive, distasteful and insensitive comment is hard to imagine. What is also striking about the Phelps’ plans is the fact that they were intending to travel all the way from Kansas in the middle of the United States, to Melbourne, down here in the South Pacific, a distance of 15,000 kilometres, just to tell us that God hates us. People in Victoria organising a memorial service for their loved ones had absolutely no effect on the lives of church-goers in Topeka, Kansas. It was none of their business, yet the Phelpses decided to make it their business. The whole plan was bizarre in the extreme. Fortunately, for reasons unknown, the Phelps never arrived in Australia, but their pronouncements created a small furore in the media in Victoria with many people writing to the newspaper, posting on the internet and calling talk-back radio to condemn the Phelps clan and their extreme homophobia. Wayne Swan, the treasurer, called Fred Phelps’ comments repugnant and disgusting. I agreed with him of course, but I was also reminded of American History X. The Phelps clan is an easy target. And while it’s one thing to rail with righteous indignation against such extremists, it’s another thing to realise that you too are guilty of hurting people through your own homophobia. The reason I say this is because many of those people who condemned the Phelpses on the one hand also oppose same-sex marriage on the other hand, and vote for parties that uphold that position: notably the ALP and the Liberal/National coalition. When same sex couples in Australia who want to get married hear their political leaders telling them that they shouldn’t be allowed to, their reaction is pretty much the same as the reaction of most Victorians to the Phelps clan. We’re trying to live our lives in the best way we can. If we get married, that will have no effect on you or your lives. You’ve decided to make our relationship your
