g_b GB Film Club screenings for Sunday, September 4th

2011-09-01 Thread vgd67
GB Film Club screenings for Sunday, September 4th

As always we have a mix of films for this Sunday's screenings – some serious,
some documentaries and some features, some short and some long. We don't have
themes, but looking at these films I think there is a common one of coming out
and coming to terms with oneself. Of course, that theme encompasses most gay
and lesbian films, but these films work them out in interesting ways.

For those who want just the titles and timings, here they are. For those who
want to read more about the films, I'm putting more information below:

1.45 – East Side Story
3.45 – More Than a Friend / 365 Without 377
5.45 – Almost Normal
(Timings may shift ahead a bit, but as always after 10-15 minutes from the film
beginning we won't let anyone in, and if you leave the hall you won't be
allowed back in. The practical reason for this is that the entrance is close to
the screen, so opening the door disrupts the screening for everyone. Please
either come on time or if you're late, don't argue and try to get in, because
it's not going to happen).

1) East Side Story

I don't know what sort of audience the producers of gay films think they are
catering to, but when I saw the trailer for this film, I thought it was going
to be a fairly stereotyped slapstick gay comedy, with lots of cute guys and
silly situations. Nothing wrong with that, but not particularly interesting
either. But in fact the film isn't like that, and while there are certainly
very cute guys – don't worry! – what it really shows is quite an appealing
story of a young man trying to come out when caught between two communities,
the Hispanic one of his family and neighbourhood, and the gay community that he
also belongs to.

Diego, who's played by the really beautiful Mexican-American actor Rene
Alvarado, works in the restaurant owned by his family, along with his
grandmother who brought him up ever since his parents died. He feels stifled
there, partly because he's been to culinary school and wants to cook more than
the standard Mexican food they serve, but mostly because there seems to be no
chance of him coming out in his conservative Hispanic neighbourhood, especially
when his life is dominated by his formidable grandmother and his boyfriend
Pablo, who's a hot shot real estate who has sex with Diego whenever they can
(especially in the houses he's selling), but simply refuses to imagine ever
coming out.

But change is coming because Diego's neighbourhood is changing – the gays are
moving in! This theme of gays gentrifying neighbourhoods, which both changes
the culture and increases property values, seems to be something of a theme in
recent films – the Spanish film we showed recently, Boystown, was also based on
this. The gay couple who move next to door to Diego, (very) hunky Wesley and
his rather over the top boyfriend Jonathan, are hoping to make money on this
change, by doing up the house and then selling it at a profit. Diego is both
intrigued and intimidated by them, but most of the neighbours are horrified,
not least Pablo, who like many closeted gay men is really homophobic.

This part of the story, where the gays deal with homophobia is something we're
used to. What's slightly different about East Side Story is that many of the
(white Anglo) gays are shown to be quite as bigoted about the Hispanics. This
is principally Jonathan, who's both condescending and racist, and all the more
so because he senses that Diego and Wes are very quickly attracted to each
other. Diego finds he can open up to Wes about being gay, in a way that he
can't to anyone else – except to his glamorous, ditzy aunt, who suddenly
arrives home to set things rolling.

The other way the film slightly surprises you is that you're expecting high
drama scenes (not least because this is what the trailer promised), but in fact
most of it unfolds with more low-key realism than drama. This might be because
Alvarado seems to be more comfortable as a quiet actor, rather than the
stereotyped high drama Hispanic (his aunt fulfils that role happily). This is
really his film, and he is very good (and very beautiful). The Hispanic
characters tend to be a bit better than the Anglo ones, who are really shown
quite one-dimensional, which is another inversion of how minorities usually
come up on the screen. All in all, a really nice little film, and while I know
many people skip the first film, this one is really worth catching.

2) More Than a Friend / 365 Without 377

Both these films, I think, have been shown at Kashish, so some of you may have
already seen them, but they seem to be interesting enough to bear watching
again. I haven't had the time to see 365 Without 377 in full, but the clips
I've seen have been excellent and the other big reason for seeing it is because
it's really about the queer community in Mumbai, so many of you will know many
of the people in the film and

Hi.

I am sure you are enjoying reading the thought provoking, at times
funny, at times informative mails and also seeing the JPGs/pictures
that members post on this list

However, at times you may get a lot of mail and it may flood your
email box.

If you feel flustered and feel that there are too many emails, I'd
like to remind you that you don't have to leave just to stop us from
clogging your inbox.

You have the option of

1) getting your mails in digest form (however you will not be able
to see the pictures in this format)
"Daily digest" ... once or twice a day, you will receive an
email -- text only -- listing all new postings ... just click on the
"messages" link at the top of the digest to go to the web archive to
see any
attachments.)

2) or you can view mails directly on the web... and choose the
option ...
you can see what's new on the website and still keep a clear
mailbox. You will never receive mail from us if you do that. YOU
choose
when to visit us ... and you can check out what you like and can
skip over
what doesn't interest you.

3)no email option

I hope this helps. The commands for choosing the various modes are

Hi All

2 personal advertisements seeking mates a month are allowed on the list. It’s
unfair to others if you post your advertisement every few days. In the past,
many have complained that they see too many personal advertisements on the
list. So a restriction of 2 personal advertisements per month has been imposed.
You may, if you wish, place your advertisement in the classified section at

In case you want to reply to a member’s personal advertisement, kindly click on

g_b File - E mail problems?

2011-09-01 Thread gay_bombay

Hi

Have you stopped getting emails from this group suddenly? It is highly unlikely
that your name has been deleted from the list. We do not delete anybody’s
membership until and unless the person repeatedly spams or sends
pornographic/crude emails

you might not be getting your mails is because your email is on the bouncing
list. Some members have trouble with bouncing e-mails: Messages that are sent
out by the group cannot be delivered to their mailboxes and are sent back to
Yahoo. This can happen for various reasons, for example, when their mailboxes
are full, or their e-mail addresses have become obsolete, etc. Yahoo doesn't
tolerate bouncing mails and will deactivate these persons' memberships. It
will, however, send you a "reactivation request." All you have to do is reply
to that (once you've fixed the problem with your mailbox), and Yahoo will
resume sending you the messages. We will also send out these requests daily.

Bounced Messages
If you subscribe to a Yahoo Groups discussion group under one of the e-mail
options ("normal" or "digest"), Yahoo Groups will suspend sending mail to you
after repeated attempts "bounce back." To see your recent bounced messages,
view your Yahoo Groups "preferences" at http://groups.yahoo.com/myprefs and
click "Bounce history" for your e-mail address. For more information on
bounced-message handling by Yahoo Groups, search Yahoo Groups help for the word
"bounce".

Why does it say my account is "bouncing"?
If group messages sent to your email address are returned to Yahoo! Groups as
undeliverable ("bouncing"), your Yahoo! Groups account may be temporarily
disabled.
Messages can be returned for several reasons:
• Your mailbox may be full -- try deleting messages from your Inbox.
• Your ISP may have a backlog of email to process -- contact your ISP.
• Your ISP may be blocking email from Yahoo! Groups -- contact your ISP.
In many cases, Yahoo! Groups can automatically reactivate your account once the
delivery problem is solved. However, in some cases you will need to manually
reactivate your account:
1. Visit your My Groups page.
2. Look for a bounce alert near the top of the page.
3. Click the Alert link to reactivate your account.
