g_b Ashok Row Kavi interview on BBC World Service's Outlook

2014-08-17 Thread Kris Bass kris.b...@gmail.com [gay_bombay]
Hi,

Yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised when I logged on to BBC World
Service's web page and found a smiling Ashok Row Kavi staring at me. I
found out that Ashok was featured on one of the station's flagship shows
called "Outlook." This morning, over my first cup of coffee, I heard the
interview. I thoroughly enjoyed knowing more about a man that I have
personally known, albeit rather casually, for several years. I recommend
this interview to anyone who would like to know more about one of India's
pioneering hay rights activists.

g_b Radio One 94.3 FM

2013-03-06 Thread Kris Bass
Guys,

I am a big fan of radio, and most of the day, I listen to either online
radio or FM.

About a year or so, Radio One went international in Mumbai and Delhi, and
Radio Indigo went in Bangalore. Here I am talking about my experience with
Radio One in Mumbai.

The music played is of course adult contemporary, suiting my tastes. But
the more important aspect was the nature of radio jockeys and the guests
they have over for conversations, especially in the breakfast shows.

I constantly interact with the radio jockeys on Twitter/Facebook and pose
questions to the talk show guests. The RJs are usually cooperative and
friendly, and even if it is a relatively penetrative question, they let me
know about what the guests say, on Twitter/Facebook, if they can't ask the
question on live radio.

Anyway, I suggested one such RJ, Hrishikesh Kannan, who happens to be an
acquaintance of mine, to try and put the idea to the bosses about adopting
a stance of support for the LGBT community. I thought it was a good idea,
especially because the target audience would be able to relate, understand
the cause, and perhaps even support us in future.

I put forth this suggestion about a month back. With the help of Sapna
Bhavnani, a friend of mine, Hrishi was convinced and he apparently put the
idea to his bosses. Later, he started asking me for names of guests tha he
could possibly invite. Of course, I suggested names such as Ashok and
Pallav. Earlier this week, he asked me for Ashok's number, and I gave it to
him after getting Ashok's permission.

I hope the interview pans out well. Plus, I hope he gets more people from
the community on air.

Some points:
- Do you all think the idea is good?
- Is anyone else willing to go on air?
- Can this be done in other cities (Delhi and Bangalore at least)?
- If we do this right, can't we use it to gain mainstream coverage during
pride marches and court rulings etc.?

Awaiting your responses.

No matter how old we get, there is always new and unknown history showing
up.

CONDOM HISTORY :

Interesting piece of history!

In 1272, the Arabs invented the condom, using a goat's lower intestine.

In 1873, the British somewhat refined the idea, by taking the intestine out
of the goat first.

I hope you appreciate this historical update.

g_b Re: [gb] Have you ever asked your barber?

2013-01-01 Thread Kris Bass
Assuming we are talking about cosmetic/esthetic purposes and not about
preoperative preparation: The whole point of going to a barber for scalp
and facial hair styling is because you cannot see these parts, at least
without using a mirror. Second, these are much denser and are aspects of
personal grooming that is part of your dressing (appearance). So, unless
you have extensive, dense pubic hair, your sight is impaired, and/or you
wear your pubic hair in public, I would not see any reason to go to a
barber.

For erotic purposes, I would ask my partner to groom me while we both are
naked.

g_b Bosons and superheroes

2012-07-25 Thread Kris Bass
So, the ongoing threads about Philip K. Dick, George Orwell, Isaac Asimov,
and Arthur C. Clarke made me wonder if there were more nerds on these
mailing lists. Well, even if you aren't into sci-fi so much, you must have
been into comics at some point in your life, right? So many of these
fictitious superhero character stories have an underlying motif of
childhood isolation and societal non-acceptance. Most of us must identify
with this, don't we?

Anyway, I wanted to know how much of an impact the Higgs boson discovery
has had on your understanding of the universe and life. Was your personal
world shaken? Or did it pass off another story that you casually read in
the papers?

Second, I want to know what you guys thought about the epic end to the
Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy. I have already watched the Dark Knight
Rises twice. Did you enjoy the dark, brooding, decadent face of the society
epitomized by Gotham city, which was almost destroyed by a terrorist group
(with distinct Al Quaeda and 9/11 similarities)? The battle between the 1%
rich and the 99% poor (Anti-Republican stance, perhaps)?

More close to what we discuss here often - What about the subplot with the
Catwoman and her seemingly lesbian relationship with her roommate? What
about the daddy-son relationships that Bruce Wayne has with Alfred, the
butler, Lucius Fox, and Commissioner Gordon? What about the seemingly gay
Robin's introduction in the series?

Even more will identify with these questions: For those into men in general
- What about the dreamy Christian Bale and sexy Joseph
Gordon-Gordon-Lewitt? For those interested in older men - what about the
classy Michael Paine, dominant Morgan Freeman, and the delectable Gary
Oldman?

What about the smooth Colin Farrell and the story in the upcoming remake of
Philip K. Dick-inspired Total Recall? Excited?

I hope that I am not the only one interested in all this nerdy stuff. Prove
me wrong, folks!

Cheers!

g_b Farooq Abdullah's comment

Dear all,

Please check this story.

http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/sex-ratio-means-men-may-have-to-turn-gay-farooq-98381

--
Sex ratio means men may have to turn gay: Farooq

Press Trust of India, Updated: April 14, 2011 13:07 IST

New Delhi:  Concerned over the growing uneven sex ratio in the
country, Union Minister Farooq Abdullah today said there will be a day
when men will have "no girls to marry" and they may have to turn
"gay".

"The day is not far when there will be no girls to marry and we'll all
become gays. That might happen," he said, while trying to drive home
the point that there should be no threat to girl child.

Addressing the 'India Water Forum 2011' in New Delhi, in the presence
of Vice-President Hamid Ansari and his cabinet colleague Salman
Khursheed, Abdullah said the number of males is growing and women are
getting "eliminated".

Census 2011 report recently revealed a worrying trend in the child sex
ratio, indicating that a strong bias against the girl child still
persists.

In 2001, there were 927 female children aged 0-six years for every
1,000 male children of the same age. In 2011, this dropped to 914
females for every 1,000 males, according to the provisional results of
"Census 2011."

"Keeping in mind the kind of question that you have asked and the
person who you have mentioned and his talent and dignity, I would not
like to dignify it with a response," Congress spokesperson Manish
Tiwari said when asked about Abdullah's remarks.

He, at the same time, shared Abdullah's concerns about the declining
sex ratio saying it was a serious issue on which the society should
contemplate.
-

If the comment is not made with humor in mind, it seems uneducated and
homophobic.

g_b I Was Gandhi's Bofyriend - New Yorker

2011-04-04 Thread Kris Bass
Hey,

Earlier this evening on Twitter, there was a huge uproar against this
satirical piece written by Paul Rudnick published in the New Yorker. I
found the piece terribly unfunny and annoying.

http://www.newyorker.com/humor/2011/04/11/110411sh_shouts_rudnick
(Story pasted below)

I posted about this on FaceBook and within minutes all my gay American
friends started commenting on it. One of them gave this insight on
Rudnick: "it might be because Paul Rudnick is a fucking moron who
thinks being gay is about repeating stereotyping jokes that were tired
in the 1950's. His appeal is to suburban audiences on Broadway who
only tolerate queers as long as they are prissy, catty, and
trivializing."

What do you guys think?

SHOUTS & MURMURS
I WAS GANDHI’S BOYFRIEND
by Paul Rudnick
APRIL 11, 2011

According to a new biography by Joseph Lelyveld, the love of Mahatma
Gandhi’s life was a German-Jewish bodybuilder named Hermann
Kallenbach. “Your portrait (the only one) stands on my mantelpiece in
my bedroom,” Gandhi wrote to Kallenbach. “The mantelpiece is opposite
to the bed.”

KOCHI, India—Gandhi is still so revered in India that a book about him
that few Indians have read and that hasn’t even been published in this
country has been banned in one state and may yet be banned nationwide.
—The Times.

I know that some people still don’t buy that Gandhi was gay, but let
me tell you, from experience, Gandhi liked guys. I first met him when
he came to see my ice show in Nepal, which was called “Holiday on
Dirt.” Gandhi came backstage and he told me, “I very much enjoyed
watching you pretend to ice-skate, in your tight pants.” I asked him,
“Um, so why are you wearing a diaper?” And he explained that his
outfit was a traditional Indian dhoti, and I said, “Well, you look
like the New Year’s baby.” And he said, “You are so handsome when you
are not speaking.”
Then he told me about how he made the fabric for his dhoti himself, on
his spinning wheel and hand loom, and I said, “Whoa, are you, like, a
Native American lesbian?” And he said, “I will tell you over dinner.”
So we do the dinner thing, and he’s all, like, “I’ll just have a
salad,” and I go, “Wait, are you some sort of total vegetarian
whatever?” And he says yes, that he doesn’t believe in killing living
things for food, and I’m, like, “Excuse me, but I’m gonna eat the cow
before it eats me.” And Gandhi says, “You are the only grown man I
have ever met whose first name is Kelly.” And I’m, like, “Well, your
first name is Mohandas, right? Maybe you should change it, so that
people can relate more. You could be, like, Tim Gandhi or Gary
Gandhi.” And he goes, “Oh, Kelly.”
But he’s kinda cute, you know, in a legendary-world-leader sort of
way, and he’s telling me all about his philosophy of nonviolence—I
mean, on and on, blah blah blah, until I just want to smack him. And
so I say, “O.K., so what if someone, like, punches you—are you just
gonna sit there?” And he says, “Yes. What would you do?” And I say,
“If someone punched me, I would throw my drink at them. I mean, maybe
you should try that with the British.” And he says, “You are so very
wise, perhaps you should spell your name Kellhi.”
And I think that’s totally adorable, so I say, “Let’s go back to your
place,” and he tells me that he’s celibate. And I’m, like, “Huh?
’Scuse me?” And he says that he believes in the purity of the body and
the soul, and that sometimes he sleeps beside a naked young woman, and
does not become aroused. And I’m, like, “Me, too.” And then he says
that also he’s married. And I’m thinking, Kelly, here we go again.
So I ask him if he’s come out to his parents, and he says, “Oh, no,
they’re all old-school Hindu and they wouldn’t understand.” So I say,
“But wouldn’t it be cool if you could do a campaign with a poster of
your parents hugging you, and the poster could say, ‘Staying in the
Closet Is a Hin-Don’t’?” And then he tells me about how India has
this, like, totally bogus caste system, and how they even have people
called untouchables, and I’m, like, “You mean brunettes?” And he
laughs and I say, “No, it’s not funny. You mean, like, brunettes?” And
he asks, “Kelly, have you ever studied any world history?,” and I’m,
like, “Excuse me, but I happen to be wearing an imported Italian
cashmere sweater,” and he says, “You know, maybe I’ll think about a
steak.”
Of course, he eventually dumped me for this German-Jewish bodybuilder,
and I warned him, I said, “Hello, been there, and I know that at first
it sounds hot, but pretty soon it’s all ‘Nein, I can’t stay out late,
because I have to get up early for the gym,’ and ‘Nein, we can’t do
your rally for South Africa, because we’ve got my cousin’s Seder,
remember?’ And his mother will be all ‘So, Mr. Gandhi, I’m told you
like to lie down in front of railroad cars, to demonstrate a political
point. Can you make a living from this?’ ”
But Gandhi and I stayed in touch, because he really was a good person.
And he’d give me advice on guys and stuff. Like, he

g_b A strange plea for help

2011-02-19 Thread Kris Bass
Hi everyone,

I got this message from a friend of mine. It's about a friend (woman) of his
who's finding it hard to come to term with her sexuality and sexual
orientation. I'm pasting the contents of the message below.

*"i know a very nice, homely, cool girl who is also highly qualified. She
likes rock and roll and is a vocalist. she's 24. she's frigid...unable to
have sex. family pressure to get married is mounting to a point where she
might just decide to end it all. i think you understand better what a
fragile situation this is...this is worse than rape.
She wants to meet guys who are gay, but have similar pressures on them to
settle down "with a girl". This way she can be helped...and someone from the
male gay community can also breathe easy.

I'm all for the "coming out of the closet" thing. But Kris i also know that
there must be people out there who are struggling with gaining acceptance
towards their sexuality. Maybe we can help 2 people...

i have seen her state, man. imagine what she'll have to go through...it
bought tears to my eyes...she is a very caring and loving person..." *

I don't know what to tell my friend. Should I talk to her? Should I suggest
that she speaks to some counsellor? Maybe someone at Humsafar trust? Do you
think she can find someone gay who'll agree to forge a 'marriage' with her?

Please advice!

Queer groups celebrate with pride

*Allow me be, just another being/ I’m just a shade in the rainbow/ Allow me
be, what I truly am/ A brilliant shade in the rainbow.*

Composer and musician Krishnakumar Venkitachalam wrote this chorus to his
Rainbow Song during the gay rights agitation in 2008. Two years down the
line, the song once again captured the spirit of the queer movement when he
sang it during a concert at Bandra’s Carter Road promenade on Thursday
night.

The concert, which had five gigs by rock bands with queer members, was part
of the on-going celebrations of the Queer Pride Week, which will culminate
in the annual Queer Pride March on Saturday. “I may be gay, but I identify
myself more as a human being. My song is about liberation and human rights
for all minorities,” said Kris, the name by which Venkitachalam is popularly
known.

Kris, a medical doctor by qualification, took up rock music when he moved to
Mumbai from Kerala in 2005, and is a member of three bands in the city — he
plays the bass guitar with Shor Bazaar and Cirkles, and is a guitarist and
vocalist for his own venture, Ideat Savante. All three bands performed in
the concert, along with Anand Bhaskar’s band MH04 and city-based lesbian
punk performers Alisha Batth and Alish Pais.

Why not get someone gay/lesbian who has children (from a straight

SC issues notice to Centre on gay sex 9 Jul 2009, 1146 hrs IST,
TIMESOFINDIA.COM

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/SC-issues-notice-to-Centre-on-gay-sex/articleshow/4756794.cms

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday issued a notice to the Centre
and NGO Naz Foundation on a petition challenging the Delhi High Court
judgement decriminalizing gay sex.

The court has sought the reply by July 20.

Clarifying that marriage laws had not changed, the apex court refused to
stay gay marriages. Any interim order for staying gay marriages or their
registration would be considered after hearing the Centre and other parties
concerned.

The Supreme Court was hearing a petition filed by astrologer SK Kaushal
challenging the Delhi High Court judgement on Section 377.

g_b The article that I wrote for DNA

2009-07-06 Thread Kris Bass
Hey guys,
Just for the record, I was asked to contribute to DNA (Mumbai). I was asked
to write about how much further we need to go with regard to attaining human
rights. Here's the link
http://www.dnaindia.com/mumbai/comment_now-that-we-are-legal-make-it-illegal-to-harass-us_1271105
And here's the article.
*'Now that we are legal, make it illegal to harass us'*
Dr Krishna Kumar Venkitachalam
Saturday, July 4, 2009 23:30 IST

I was at work when, on the live webcast of a news channel, I found out about
the Delhi High Court ruling. I couldn't help but scream out, "Ye! I'm
finally legal", and ended up startling my colleagues.

My initial jubilation was shared by many, both within and outside the LGBT
(lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) community. I heartily congratulate and
thank all those involved in the movement that led to this historic judgment.
Who amongst us wouldn't celebrate our becoming "not illegal" after such a
lengthy and arduous struggle?

However, as a pragmatic gay activist, I realise that this is the first minor
victory in a protracted, uphill battle. The ground-level situation of an
open homosexual in India remains socially perilous. From the constant
homophobic banter at the workplace -- which in my case was KEM Hospital --
to the threat of getting beaten up in a police lock-up for no reason at all,
life is tenuous and stifling.

One of the reasons I put my promising career as a surgeon on hold to try my
luck as a musician was to enjoy the freedom to be myself. But not everyone
has luxuries such as an accepting family and an alternative career to
consider, or an enlightened circle of friends. Hence, it is essential that
we work towards a state of social equality.

We have waited so long for this crumb of approval that we are likely to fall
into a state of complacency, thinking that we have "made it". But that,
sadly, is far from the truth. In fact, the recent ruling will inflame the
more radical wings of conservative sentiment and could, in fact, lead to an
even more hostile stance against us. Now we need a law criminalising
harassment of our community.

I was at the receiving end of discrimination during the hunt for an
apartment for me and my partner. I even had to ask a woman, a good friend of
mine, to pose as my wife. If responsible adult citizens are denied a place
to live with their same-sex partners in a city like Mumbai, have we actually
progressed as a nation?

We shouldn't be grateful for the high court decision decriminalising us --
showing gratitude would be like kissing the torturer for loosening the
shackles. We were always legal at every rational and moral level, and for
that to have been confirmed by the court was merely stating the obvious.

g_b 'Straight' out of nowhere

2009-03-07 Thread Kris Bass
I was one of the few invitees to the screening of 'Straight' yesterday
at Fun Republic preview theatre (Parvati Balagopalan, Vinay Pathak,
Anuj Chaudhary are just a few names from the attendees of the
screening). I was skeptical because of a lot of reasons - a cynic by
my side, a 'gay-friendly' movie from Bollywood on the screen and a
theatre full of people whose natural instincts are to scream and
holler on instinct at the slightest of jokes and faintest of hints
positive gay-vibe. The 'Dostana' nightmare still lingers on, you see.
The first few minutes of the movie added to my wariness as some
unexpected and cheap animation tricks to 'charter' down a family tree
were unfurled on the screen.

Thankfully, that was just about it. The movie had me forget about all
the things that could go wrong. It was fast paced, witty, clever and
intelligent. The character development was just at the right pace
leaving scope for the plot to become really interesting. It's funny
how performances simply become good when you get rid of all the
'stars' and get some real actors into the mix. It's not surprising
that I'm itching to add an 'unlike Dostana' tag to each and every
sentence in this little post. But I'm not a movie-critic and I'm not
writing because I needed to feel like one. Let's get to the point
here.

This movie is so positive with regards to gays and their rights that
it pales everything else that has come before it - 'Fashion',
'Dostana' you name it. There is NO gay stereo-typing. There are no
banal jokes about homosexuals. Homophobia was dealt with classy
treatment which would make the homophobes enjoy the movie and possibly
change their mindset. There are so many instances in the movie which
stress about gays being regular people, about gays being not obsessed
with sex and only sex, about arranged marriages destroying lives in
the gay-context and finally about gay relationships being simply like
any other relationship with all it's virtues and fallacies.

We have campaigned for 'Milk' and we have cheered for 'Dostana'. I
think 'Straight' is the movie that we should really promote as the
judgment at the courts is around the corner. I applaud the efforts of
all the people who were part of the movie! Please go watch it!

g_b Legalize prostitution, homosexuality (on Mumbai Mirror)

2008-10-08 Thread Kris Bass
Hey all,

the content here.

NEW DELHI: Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss may not have found support in

"If two adults want to be together, then why should anyone have a problem?

Ramadoss is facing stiff resistance from the home ministry for his efforts

g_b Editorial comment on TOI on 6th of October

2008-10-08 Thread Kris Bass
Fellow gaytizens,

I don't know how this didn't get published on the mailing list. It was right
there on the editorial page of yesterday's TOI, Mumbai edition. Here's the
link.
And for those lazy ones, here is the entire text.

*One for Ramadoss*

We have to endorse Anbumani Ramadoss on this one. The health minister has
acquired a reputation as a maverick in the UPA cabinet, moreover one who's
so taken up with administrative politics in New Delhi's elite All India
Institute of Medical Sciences that he has little time to address the rot in
the country's public health-care system. Ramadoss, however, has done the
right thing in arguing for decriminalising homosexuality, contradicting the
home ministry's stand on section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Delhi high court is examining a public interest litigation on the
subject, which says that private consensual sex between adults shouldn't be
considered a crime. Section 377 renders certain kinds of private consensual
sex — those which allegedly "go against the order of nature" — a crime.
Homosexuality is deemed to fall under its purview. Punishments can be
draconian, going up to 10 years in prison. This law has colonial and
theological origins, having been incorporated by the British into the Indian
Penal Code in 1860. It's time now to take a fresh look at the law.

The problem with section 377's antiquated provisions is twofold. Firstly, if
one doesn't go by theological certainties, how does one determine what is
natural and what goes against the order of nature? Contraception can, from a
certain point of view, be seen as going against the order of nature. But we
don't ban contraception for that reason. More fundamentally, however,
banning private consensual activity between adults is a way of restricting
personal choice. It's a throwback to times when state and society were
considered sacrosanct and the individual had no rights.

The government's case against homosexuality doesn't carry much logic. It has
argued that homosexuality results in the spread of AIDS and decriminalising
it can lead to breaches of peace. But soaring crime graphs haven't really
been recorded in the many countries that have decriminalised homosexuality.
And as Ramadoss has observed, it's precisely when gay populations are forced
to go underground that AIDS control programmes can't reach them, creating
the greatest threat to themselves and others. Section 377 may have some
validity as far as protecting the rights of children and minors are
concerned. But with growth of the sphere of personal choice and alternative
lifestyles, as well as increasing recognition of the rights of gays, the
state should no longer concern itself with what consenting adults choose to
do in private.

Why, may I ask, was this ignored?

Cheers,

Kris

Hello,

A few days back, I had posted a poem calle 'Rainbow Song'. I wrote a song on
the poem and have recorded at home on my computer. Check it out and give me
your opinion. But before I go ahead I must warn you that it's just a demo
version. It's not a high quality recording. It also is pretty 'heavy' and
might not be pleasing to the ears of people who don't enjoy rock music. I
would like to remind I'm not a pro-vocalist and I only sing backing vocals
when it's required in my bands. So, don't tell me that I didn't warn you.

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of making a song for us, the LGBTians. I thought I would share
the lyric that I have in mind. Here you go..

*Rainbow Song*

It was a dream to walk like this
To feel so sure, to shy no more
It was a dream to talk like this
To be so pure, to cry no more

It was a dream to love like this
To feel it more than ever before
It was a dream to fight like this
Let's dream no more, Let's fly some more

Allow me be, just another being
I'm just a shade in the rainbow
Allow me be, what I truly am
A brilliant shade in the rainbow

It was a dream to be free, in justice
To fake no more, to fear no more
It was a dream to claim what's ours
To be just like every one else

It was a dream to be so loved
To be a friend, be to everyone
It was a dream to feel like this
Let's dream no more, Let's fly some more

Allow me be, just another being
I'm just a shade in the rainbow
Allow me be, what I truly am
A brilliant shade in the rainbow

g_b The Kris Report - 'The Picnic to Kolad'

2008-08-04 Thread Kris Bass
Hey all,

Yesterday's (3rd of August), Friendship Day picnic to Doctor's farm in
Kolad, oozed with fun. At least in my case, the lack of sleep (thanks to the
party on Saturday, didn't hamper the overall experience of the picnic.
We went to a place called 'Doctor's Farm' in Kolad in a bus and full of
charming and cute group of 52 GB members. I caught up with some of my
friends as the bus meandered across Mumbai, halting at the various 'pick-up
points' in the city to 'pick-up' gay men interested in 'fun'. The fun
started with some gay-bhajans (rivolting!) and Antaakshari. Soon it was time
for introductions which were nothing but charming. Umang who has the wiliest
shade of sense of humor and a tendency to flourish even in his 'digs' stood
by the introductee to help 'come out' to the crowd. Everyone, including the
most reluctant of all newbies were laughing, baring and sharing themselves;
this is what these parties are for and that's where GB seems to achieve what
it strives so hard to: to provide gays a safe & comfortable environment to
get comfortable with their sexuality. The 'ladies' did have a giant blue
whale of a time!

In about 3 hours after the start, we reached our destination: a beautiful
countryside with the fantasy land look with meadows, streams, waterfalls.
The air was hot and humid or else, it would just like be in a dream. At the
farm house, at least I was surprised to see the facilities. A relatively
equipped kitchen/restaurant, good toilets/bathrooms and huge dorm like rooms
(something that you would have seen in dreams about orgies) complimented the
garden and lounging place.

The frolic lingered on during the comforting breakfast with the marvellous
adrak chai. The changing session (swimming gear) was highlighted by the
catwalk of the queens. I, despite being as un-queen-y and grace-less as
Prince Charles, did the walk too - and received insane amounts of cheering -
much misplaced I presume. I was loaned a t-shirt and a pair of shorts by the
aforementioned bundle of wit which saved me the blemishes of my lack of
preparedness for the picnic.

In a ride simulating the African safaris; just replace wild grazing animals
with wild 'gay'zing men, we were tempo-ported to the stream and waterfall.
We were surprisingly not alone there. Other picnic groups and a group of
native children were enjoying nature downstream. 50 out of the 52 strong
group jumped into the cool, calming stream. I myself was a little scared of
slipping in the mossy rock and injuring myself but lost all restraint in a
minute inside the water. Even those were a little shy at the outset
unshackled themselves to enjoy. The two hours spent hence can't be put in
words. Soon afterweards, we headed back to the farm house for showers and
lunch. The lunch was very tasty and fulfilling.

The post-lunch session, saw a group playing 'Dumb-charades' and the rest
took a break. As effervescent as you could expect, we gays once again showed
the world why we are so talented in so many walks of life. The acting out
was so hilariously earth-shaking that one of the benches buckled out under
the sheer stress of entertainment.

After the evening tea, it was time to head back. I was tired and I decided
to spend some time resting. But the energy of the group hardly fell as I
heard spasms of laughter every few seconds in the Truth or Dare and
Antaakshari games.

All in all, I fantastic experience. One, in which I confirmed that GB events
are tons of times more fun than anything else! Thank you everyone (Neither
can I remember all the names, nor do I want to mention any for risk of
damaging privacy). And I'm already looking forward to next picnic.

And a big, big pat on the back to the cheerful Anand who took the pains to
arrange and conduct the picnic.

Can't have any report without the negatives:

   - The 'picking-up' could be made a little more punctual. I know this is
due to people not turning up. But then, you don't want the majority to
   suffer because of the majority.
   - For a community who face ridicule and a negative portrayal of
themselves, we shouldn't be portraying that kind of views over other groups.
I'm talking about people commenting on other people bathing in the same
stream (a group of old men and straight couples). Nobody likes to made fun
of. And believe me, it could be your Dad (or yourself in 20 years) or your
sister and her hubby. I would also urge people from passing general comments
about strangers pretending that they don't understand English. The 'Doctor'
who runs the farm was there along with his wife (I presume) and both were
excellent speakers of English. I hope the community understands my point.
   - The return of the hanky-panky; don't want to detail it. I know the
senior members are doing what's required. Just want to high-light this fact
to those who are either new, unaware or 'I don't care' type. Please
understand that such instances are putting the entire community at risk

g_b A little self-adulation

2008-08-04 Thread Kris Bass
Hey all,

I had been stuck in two minds to say what I am about to say. That was
resolved at the picinc when some of my friends urged me to go ahead.

Some of you may know that I'm a musician and I play in a band called 'Shor
Bazaar'. I'm happy to announce that the prestigious Rolling Stone magazine
have done an article about us in The August edition. For those interested,
they can read about the article here: http://bazaarshor.blogspot.com.

My band is very supportive of my sexuality. Some of them might even attend
the pride parade! And I thought that I should present this fact along with
our little success story.

I hope I'm not being a little over-zealous and self-indulgent.

g_b The Sudhagad trek

2008-07-08 Thread Kris Bass
Hey all,

It was a wonderful trek yesterday to Sudhagad. Going there without
really expecting a lot must have also helped. The trek was comfortable
enough to be not tiring and tough enough to make us feel like we have
achieved something.

A lot of fun activities, especially in the bus made it more memorable.
Stuff like antahkshari, Truth of Dare (which went from frivolous to
almost scandalous) really entertained those who had enough charge left
in the batteries sans the trek.

Kudos to Jayesh and Radhey for doing all the slogging work of
collecting funds and organizing it. And to GB for providing platforms
like this where people like us, especially the newbies, to interact
freely and thus get a little closer to the sense of comfort with
themselves.

g_b The support of the band

2008-07-01 Thread Kris Bass
Hey all,

Some of you might know that I have a (hindi) rock band called Shor
Bazaar. I am out to them and am very open about my sexuality and
personal life etc.

Yesterday, after the GayBombay Sunday meet at Bandra, I was lounging
at one of our bandmate's apartment discussing some songwriting etc. I
suddenly felt like asking 'Guys, would you guys be interested in
playing at a GB party?'

It took a brief second. But only that.

'Yes, why not?'

I was surprised at first.

'Are you sure?'

'Yeah, we'd love to support you and GB.'

I felt the warm feeling of relief and comfort. I thought it was pretty
cool of the band to actually say that.

If you have time, please check out these pages and listen to our
music. The lyrics are not gay related or anything though.

Hey,

I came to know that there was this other support group for South Mumbai at

it.

What's it called?

Why is it not on the internet?

2008-05-16 Thread Kris Bass
I think there are two events happening in the LGBT World in Mumbai this
Sunday. One's the Sunday meet at Thane and the other, the film screenings at
Humsafar Trust. Both seem to be at the same timings. Why is that so?
Personally, I would rather watch films than travel to Thane!

g_b Searching for safety

2008-01-04 Thread Kris Bass
Hello friends,

It's been a long time since I participated in the discussions
actively. That can be attributed to my hectic schedule in the past few
months of life. That includes finding the love of my life online on a
personals website as well!

I would like to introduce myself once more. I'm a 28 year old
orthopaedic surgeon living in Mumbai for the last 3 years. I have
always been an admirer of older men. So it shouldn't be as shocking as
it would have been otherwise when I introduce my 64-year-old
lover/boyfriend/partner/spouse/husband who is a linguist/photographer
from NYC. We are committed to each other and are planning to settle
down in Mumbai.

For that, we are looking for a 1 - 2 BHK apartment in a good locale in
Mumbai and I've already seen a few. To my dismay, almost all of the
housing societies would pose the question 'Are you married? or 'Are
you a bachelor?' before even getting into the details of the
apartment.

On the first exposure to such a derogatory remark (in the terms of
marriage defining moral righteousness), I was shocked and outraged.
But as always, as we've all had to do our entire lives, I took it in
my stride and have formulated an answer: 'I'm a bachelor. My friend
who is sharing the apartment with me is, too. And we can't afford to
have two apartments. We've similar interests which would make it
convenient for us to be living together.' That has worked sometimes
now. Another thing that has worked is to let these housing societies
know that I'm a practicing surgeon/doctor. That somehow salvages a lot
of respect in these circumstances.

And then, I had a talk with my sister and an uncle, a father-figure,
the only two people in my family whom I've come out to about our
plans. Both had their views regarding the 'safety' of settling down in
India. Would we face ridicule? Would we be ostracized? Would we be
asked to vacate should the reality come to the fore? My boyfriend also
suggested that families living in the neighborhood would be curt
towards us and be scared of letting the children see us together
thinking that they might be 'exposed' to immoral issues. To top it
all, would somebody tip us off and would we be legally punished under
Sec. 377 IPC? Add to that this hyperbolic age difference between the
two of us, the chances of us being discriminated vis-à-vis the
'pedophilia scandal' which hit the media in a wave of movies like
'Page 3'.

All this has led me to write this letter/request to all of the GB
members. I want to ask you for some advice or suggestions regarding a
place in Mumbai where we could live. Would anybody know about
gay-friendly apartment complexes or dealers/agents who would be
gay-friendly? I guess there are at least few gay couples in Mumbai who
live together.

I would be grateful to anyone who would like to comment on any aspect
of this peculiar problem of ours.

Thanks to all of you for spending your time reading and hopefully,
responding to this message.

Regards,

Kris

g_b "Sancharam" screened in Thiruvananthapuram

2005-04-09 Thread Kris Bass

Hello all,

It might be a little too late to discuss about Sancharam here but...

Today, there was a public screening of the movie 'Sancharam' in
Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It was the inaugural film in a film
festival organized by the Mumbai based women's empowerment
organization 'Point of View'.

I thought that it was a very good movie. Especially the
positive ending for the Lesbian protagonist in the movie. There are a
couple of gay-lesbian supporting characters in the movie. Besides, the
topic was handled with respect, dignity and maturity.

There was a heated discussion about the movie and its message/issue
with the director in the hot seat. As usual, there were some very
conservative, undereducated views on the issues.

All in all, a good movie experience.

Re: g_b Hijras on trains

2005-04-08 Thread Kris Bass

Mr. Clayton,

I don't know too much about Hijras. But I'll try to answer your
queries. It cannot be that they picked up my sexual orientation in the
train. Therefore, it is a coincidence or the fact that I'm almost
boyish in looks which made them pick out me from the crowd.

Hijras going down in numbers is an alien concept with me. I cannot
help you out with this.

About role-playing; let me just make you aware of that in India. There
is a famous lesbian couple in Kerala who often get featured in
mainstream media. They engage in role-playing. Popular entertainment
also pokes at us LGBTs by showing extremely feminine features and
behaviour in gays and vice versa in lesbians.

But still, I don't think that an average gay/lesbian person is
interested in this. Therefore I agree with the fact that if Hijras don
roles, then they cannot be classified under regular gays/lesbians.

Cheers

g_b Hijras on trains

2005-04-06 Thread Kris Bass

Hey all,

I wanted to discuss something with you all. Firs of all, a little
introduction. I'm a 25 year old Gay male from Kerala. I'm very
comfortable with my sexual identity and am proud of being what I'm. I
honestly support all LGBT liberation activities.

Now the issue which I want to discuss is the harassment of people by
hijras on train. I guess most of you had an experience of this.

I happened to travel to Mumbai twice in the last four months and on
three times in the four train journeys, a group of hijras passes by.
One of them picks me up out of everyone. With their characteristic
hand clap, they come over and poke me. I act uninterested. They call
me names; first 'Hero', then almost start insulting me for not paying
them. On one occasion, they sat on my lap and tried to act funny. The
last time, they jerked away my earphones. Of course, I didn't give
them money. But I was insulted.

Is there something that can be done about this? I mean, it is
downright harassment which is going on.

I, being an insider of the LGBT community, am ashamed of such
behaviour. If we continue to let this happen, I think the society will
always consider us with a scorn.

I hope to hear more views on this.

Kris

g_b Page 3

2005-03-16 Thread Kris Bass

Hey all,

I saw Page 3 last week and I wanted to talk about the movie.
Especially the part with the gay friend falling in love with the lover
of the protagonist of the movie.

First of all, this is one movie which showed a normal gay. Just like
anyone among us. I was very happy about that. But the twist where the
supposedly honest gay friend has an affair with the boyfriend (a hunk)
of the lead character was disappointing. I thought that it again
showed that gays were not faithful.

Besides, the whole sarcasm in the movie is quite refreshing.

I don't konw if you guys have already had a detailed discussion about
it but I'm looking forward to hearing your views about it.

Cheers

Well,

I agree that the words he used weren't appropriate (... am gay for 4

g_b Re: from Femina: What Would You Do... if you found out that your husband was a close

2005-02-25 Thread Kris Bass

A good article to read. I feel such articles would be coming more
often in our print media in the coming months. I have contacts with a
few married men who have been closeted gays. This is an important
social issue.

Cheers

[gay_bombay] Article on gays in Malayala Manorama

2004-09-27 Thread Kris Bass

Hello all,

I was totally surprised to find this article on the Sunday Magazine
(called 'Shree') of Malayala Manorama.

Here is the link to the story in Malayalam.

http://www.manoramaonline.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=manorama/MalArticle/Malfullstory&cid=1096196781616&c=MalArticle&p=1009975921475&colid=1010131822526&channel=MalNews&count=11

It is a pity that I can't find an english translation of this article
on the English version of this page.

I'm surprised by the amount of gay awareness conveyed in it.

Cheers

[gay_bombay] Movie featuring pedophilia

2004-09-10 Thread Kris Bass

Hey all,

I went to watch a Malayalam movie called "Kaazhcha" today. It is the
first effort of the director Blessy. The movie is a nice one with
splending cinematography featuring the life post-earthquake refugee
child who gets adopted in a family living in the backwaters of Kerala.

The movie is interesting because it actually shows a policeman
pedophile using these street children for sex. The featured kid
actually bites the policeman's penis and runs in the first few moments
of the TV.

Then, the protagonist of the movie (acted by Mammootty) gets arrested
on charges of pedophilia with the kid. During the time at the police
station, Section 377 is clearly read out completely. Actually, the
camera captures the actual text while it is being read out.

I guess it is the director's effort promote awareness about this section.

What do you think about this?

Kris

[gay_bombay] Attracted to felines?

2004-08-31 Thread Kris Bass
Hey all,

I've noticed in a recent post on GB that gays are more attracted to
cats than normal people. If attraction towards cats is a criterion to
assess gayness, I think I would be right on top.

Does anyone else share my attraction towards cats; both domestic and wild?

Looking forward to replies...

Cheers

Kris
-

i have always liked animals. for 11 years i had a dog and for some years i also a cat,
make that many cats... my cat had litter afer litter... i guess its not true that gays
are more attracted to cats.. its just another theory without any real foundation

[gay_bombay] Saturday smilies from me

2004-08-13 Thread Kris Bass
A guy was walking down the street when he sees a woman with perfect
bre_sts. He says to her, "Hey, miss, would you let me bite your bre_sts for
$100?"

"Are you nuts?" she replies and walks away.

He turns around, runs around the block and gets to the corner before she
does. "Would you let me bite your bre_sts for $1,000?" he asks again.

"Listen, sir, I'm not that kind of woman. Got it?"

So the guy runs around the next block and faces her again. "Would you let
me bite your bre_sts... just once for $10,000?"

So the woman thinks about this for a while and says, "Hm, $10,000?" She
thinks a bit "OK, but just once, and not here. Let's go to that dark alley
over there."

So they go to the alley and she takes off... her blouse to reveal the most
perfect bre_sts in the world. As soon as the guy sees them, he jumps on
them and starts caressing them, fondling them, kiss ing them, burying his
face in them... but not biting them. After about 15 minutes the woman gets
all annoyed and says, "Are you gonna bite them or what?"

"Nah," he replies. "Costs too much!"

..

A Mother had 3 virgin daughters. They were all getting married within a
short time period. Because Mom was a bit worried about how their sex
life
would get started, she made them all promise to send a postcard from the
honeymoon with a few words on how marital sex felt.
The first girl sent a card from Hawaii two days after the wedding. The
card
said nothing but: "Nescafe"!
Mom was puzzled at first, but then went to her kitchen and got out the
Nescafe jar. Nescafe Rich Blend Coffee,
475g
It said: "Good till the last drop".

Mom blushed, but was pleased for her daughter.

The second girl sent the card from Vermont a week after the wedding, and
the card read: "Rothmans"
Mom now knew to go straight to her husband's cigarettes, and she read
from
the pack: "Extra Long. King Size"
She was again slightly embarrassed but still happy for her daughter.

The third girl left for her honeymoon in Cape Town. Mom waited for a
week,
nothing. Another week went by and still nothing. Then after a whole
month,
a card finally arrived.
Written on it with shaky handwriting were the words "South African
Airways"
Mom took out her latest YOU magazine, flipped through the pages fearing
the
worst, and finally found the ad for SAA.
The ad
said: "Ten times a day, seven days a week, both ways."
  Mom fainted

[gay_bombay] Gems of the internet

2004-07-24 Thread Kris Bass
Dear all,

Normally, I don't send in pictures or other regular Fw: on this list.
But tonight, I believe I have two gems from the internet to share with
you. Mr. Coffeebeans, neither of this is porn.

1) I believe that weblogs (better known as 'blogs') are an asset to
the internet's existence. They can be informative, thought-provoking,
entertaining or outright funny. This is the perfect example of the
last type:

--- from the 'Search for Love in Manhattan' blog
(http://searchforlove.blogspot.com/)by FAUSTUS, MD this latest post
will rock your senses
http://searchforlove.blogspot.com/#109055073734148599

2) I'm attaching a politically themed cartoon. It rocks as well.

Hope to see your comments on these.

Cheers

Re: [gay_bombay] Migrate to marry or vice versa?

2004-07-22 Thread Kris Bass
Dear Tapesh,

I already have more than a handful of e-acquaintances out of which
three are very good looking prospects. Some have even offered me
accomodation. One has even proposed to marry me.

Okay, I know it is naive to think that such proposals might be
genuine. But I already see some sort of sincerity in them and I think
it is worth giving a shot.

When I need to make a decision, I would do so after a thorough
'investigation'. I'm just considering them right now.

What do you say?

Re: [gay_bombay] please clear certain doubts

2004-07-22 Thread Kris Bass
Dear Kunal,

I'll try to help you out. These are my views.

1. Yes and No. If you have always had emotions and were physically
attracted to men all through your life, you can almost be certain that
you are gay. If you have some self-doubt remaining, you can try having
sex with man/woman and confirm it. Personally, I finally understood
the remaining 1% of my gayness after I had sex with a man.

2. Some men (approximately 6% in general population I guess are gay).
It has been postulated, but not proved conclusively, that it is
genetic in orgin. I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

3. Umm... This can be due to many reasons. It can be due to the fact
that you were not confident enough about this. Or you became too
excited. You didint' take it easy and you were stressed out. Maybe it
was something do with your partner or the situation you were in. Can't
decide on your sexual orientation with just one bad instance.

4. Hyperdictionary says 'Twink' - Also reported on the Usenet group
soc.motss; may derive from gay slang for a cute young thing with
nothing upstairs (compare mainstream"chick").

Hope this has been of help.

Cheers

[gay_bombay] Migrate to marry or vice versa?

2004-07-20 Thread Kris Bass
Dear friends,

I'm 25 and am already contemplating a married life. With a man, of
course. And none too soon. I'm considering it only after I have
achieved some sort of stability in my career. Maybe by 30. Since it is
virtually impossible even to have an affair with a man in India, I am
seriously considering migrating to US/Canada or one of the European
countries.

Has anyone done any research on this for possible options? I know
there is a lot of trouble associated with getting a visa. And
therefore I need to plan for all possibilities.

And what do you say about marrying before migrating? That could ease
out a lot of things in the visa/nationality front.

Hoping for some help and guidance. Thanks in advance

Cheers

Kris

Cheap thrills? Yeah, pretty much on the money! I went to the theater
on the first week after it's release and the theater was about 2/3 rd
full with all kinds of men loooking forward to enjoying some
girl-on-girl action. I don't think anyone anyone cared about the
plight of lesbians/gays in India I guess. But then, we can't be
over-critical of the society. They are just coming of age! We should
be thankful that we have come out of age far sooner.

[gay_bombay] Girlfriend reviews

2004-06-24 Thread Kris Bass
Hey all,

This is what I read in one post yesterday.

"Isha Koppikar, who stars as a lesbian in the film, has said she was
not aware of the lesbian theme initially when director Karan Razdan
read the script to her."

What does she mean when she said that she didn't realize initially
that there was a lesbian angle in the film? Helllw? Any 3rd
standard student these days can figure out a gay theme in the movie if
the script was read out to him/her.

And what about the reaction from the international press. Did they too
ridicule the movie?

[gay_bombay] Oral sex and HIV

2004-06-11 Thread Kris Bass
Hey all,

I'm just quoting from a leading source used by
Physicians all over the world about the risks of HIV
transmission with sex.

CMDT - 2004, Page - 1265

"... the best available estimates indicate that the
risk of HIV transmission with receptive anal
intercourse is between 1:100 and 1:30, with insertive
anal intercourse 1:1000, with receptive vaginal
intercourse 1:1000, with insertive vaginal intercourse
1:10,000 and receptive fellatio with ejaculation
1:1000. The per-contact risk of HIV transmission with
other behaviors, including receptive fellatio without
ejaculation, insertive fellatio and cunnilingus are
not known."

I recommend condoms for even oral sex unless you are
absolutely sure about the disease status of HIV.

Of course, the other STDs are altogether a different
issue.

Have fun guys, but play it safe.
