g_b Bangalore transgender invited for CJI swearing in

2012-09-28 Thread Vikram D
Congratulations to Akkai for getting this honour. I hope the judges who are
deciding the 377 case take note! As it happens, in addition to all her other
excellent work, Akkai helped recruit the mothers of two Bangalore based
transgenders to sign the parents petition that we filed in the Supreme Court.

fromTimes of India:
Bangalore transgender invited for CJI's swearing-inSaswati Mukherjee,

BANGALORE: It's a proud moment for Akkai Padmashali, the 29-year-old
transgender from Bangalore. On Saturday, she will
become the first from her community to attend the swearing-in ceremony
of Justice Altamas Kabir as Chief Justice of India at Rashtrapati
Bhavan, New Delhi.
I am very happy, said Akkai, unable to conceal her excitement. Justice
Kabir's office has invited her for the function.
The programme manager of Sangama, the human rights organization which
works for the welfare of transgenders, is glad that for the first time
the community has been recognized and invited to such a high-profile
event.
Justice Kabir has been very supportive. Hopefully, such initiatives will be
carried forward from here, said Akkai.
Born and raised in Bangalore, Akkai attended school till class X.
Thereafter, there was no provision for her to continue studies as she
was ostracized from society.
In February this year, Akkai
participated in an internal governmental high-level commission and
millennium development goals meeting organized by UNESCAP in Bangkok.
Attended by the likes of the President of Fiji and Thailand deputy prime
minister among others, Akkai put forth her views at the forum.
I voiced my opinion on how transgenders must be given provisions to own a
ration card and voter ID card, as well as access to education and
housing in the state, said Akkai.
Akkai is also glad that she
happens to be in Karnataka. It is such a progressive state, she said,
referring to the high court's landmark decision to appoint a transgender as an
employee.
But there is one issue which bothers Akkai. In 2010, the state government
recognized the gender minority community and said its rights will be protected,
but nothing concrete has been done
even two years down the line, she said.

g_b Bangalore, Global AIDS Week of Action, Protest Rally on 24th May 2007

2007-05-22 Thread Manohar Elavarthi

*1000 AIDS DEATHS IN INDIA EVERY DAY*
**

*Bangalore HIV-AIDS Forum invites you to*
*join the Global AIDS Week of Action*
*to pressurise the government to*

*Provide Free AIDS Treatment *
*Save People's Lives*

*PROTEST RALLY
10 AM, 24TH MAY 2007, THURSDAY*
*starts from Makkalakoota, Chamarajpet*
**
*PUBLIC MEETING
12 noon, 24TH MAY 2007, THURSDAY*
*Bannappa Park, Corporation Circle*
**
**

*AIDS kills 8000 people each day around the world. 3 out of 4 HIV positive
people in the world still lack treatment. India is home to an estimated 57
lakhs of HIV positive people. Indian Government provides ARV, the life
saving drugs to only 1 out of 10 HIV positive people. Every HIV positive
person should get free ARV irrespective of their class, caste, gender,
sexuality, age, geographical location, profession etc. There should be a
strong political will to keep the Government's promise to stop these
needless deaths of women, men and children. *

*  *

*In the name of 'patents', multinational drug companies put profits before
people by blocking the production of less expensive generic versions of ARV.
Indian Government must follow the footsteps of Thailand Government and
declare AIDS as a national emergency and give compulsory licenses for the
production of ARV. Rich nations such as the G8 must back their warm words on
AIDS with real funds. Instead of pumping money into 'global war on terror',
illegal occupation of Iraq, wars for oil, production of nuclear weapons and
militarization, they should fund to save lives, to fight HIV/AIDS and
starvation deaths.*

* *

*Stigma, discrimination, rejection and human rights violations are fuelling
the deaths of HIV positive people in India. HIV positive people face severe
human rights violations across the country - discrimination in healthcare
settings; children thrown out of schools; people pushed out of homes and
jobs; women, particularly widows, denied their rightful share in the
property; double stigma against sexuality minorities, sex workers and IDUs
(Injecting Drug Users); exclusion and rejection by families and friends…
Powerlessness of sexuality minorities, sex workers, IDUs, women, children,
migrants, people with disabilities, nomadic communities, dalits and adivasis
and their marginalization makes them vulnerable to HIV infection. They lack
information, resources and access to health and livelihoods. Central and
State Governments must ensure protection of human rights of its people.*

* *

*Poverty, lack of food and nutrition kill most of the HIV positive people in
India. Adequate nutrition can help keep the immune system of HIV positive
people strong for many years and help in delaying the intake of ARV. Good
nutrition is essential for people on ARV, as the drugs are very toxic. HIV
infections make people poorer as they are forced to spend a significant
portion of their income for the treatment of OIs (Opportunistic Infections)
as our public health system has almost collapsed. Government needs to
consider this vital fact and provide food and nutritional supplements to
needy HIV positive people and take immediate steps to revitalize public
health system. *

* *

*Most people across India don't even know about their HIV positive status.
HIV-AIDS programs are still covering a limited number of people from a few
targeted populations and very little coverage of general population. Less
than 5% of pregnant women have access to PPTCT (Prevention of Parent To
Child Transmission) resulting in a estimated 57000 new born babies infected
every year. There are very few HIV-AIDS programs to address the needs of
vulnerable populations including migrants, people with disabilities,
adivasis, dalits, nomadic communities etc. HIV-AIDS programs need an
immediate scale up to cover each and every person of our country.*

* *

*HIV testing facilities are far and few, and proper counseling is a rarity
as the centres are understaffed. In many VCTCs (Voluntary Counseling and
Testing Centres) if there is staff, there is no testing equipment and
vice-versa - a classic example of our public health system. HIV positive
people have to pay a huge sum of money for various tests – viral load, CD4
count etc. Many HIV positive people in India are already developed
resistance to 1st line of ARV and need 2nd line of ARV immediately. If the
government doesn't start providing 2nd line drugs they have no choice but
die. Our Government is not even providing pediatric formulations of ARV to
all children who are in need. Health as a basic right is constitutionally
guaranteed to every person. Indian State has an obligation to provide all
regimens of ARV, OI treatment, testing facilities, care and support at free
of cost to all its citizens.*

* *

*People affected are best equipped to lead the movement and our Governments
completely ignore this in addressing the AIDS pandemic. It is high time that
people infected and worst affected are given central space in the struggle
against

g_b Bangalore New Year's Party - DECADENCE 2007

2006-12-27 Thread seth_plate1976

Hey Guys,

You have been to parties. And then you have been to New Year's
parties. Well, how many do you wanna go back to or even actually
remember??? Don't answer that. We know your answer.

But your answer won't be the same, after you have come to
DΣĆΛδΣηĆΣ. This isn't some marketing spiel
on `crack'. It's truly going to be one of the most memorable
parties you ever been to, if not The most memorable.

Sample this: An 8-hour long party with more than 5 events, that's
gonna bring in the crowd from not just cool city of Bangalore but all
the other happening cities of the country, speed date 23 other
hotties-on-the-lookout, a chance to be Patrick Swayze or find your own
Mr. Dirty Dancer on paper dance, be Shakira or be Bipasha and give it up
to tubthumping international bollywood tracks, literally bid for a hot
date and more. And all this for a price that's half of what any
other city is gonna fleece you for.

You won't have to lose your shirt to pay your way into
DΣĆΛδΣηĆΣ. That doesn't mean you will be
stopped from losing it after you are in (wink!).

For all those who have already booked your tickets to Goa or anywhere
else, thank you for your kind attention so far. But FYI, Bangalore is
the place to be this New Year's Eve. And
DΣĆΛδΣηĆΣ is where the action is.

Caveat: Don't blindly take our word for it. You can always come back
next year. And for the rest of you who won't heed to this warning,
well, smuggling in a pack of glucose won't be a bad idea. After all,
you don't want to run out of your mojo half way thru
the…umm-err…party…ain't it!

Details, Details, Details!

Entry Fee: Rs.850.

Food: Unlimited Starters, Salad, Veg Non Veg Maincourse, Dessert

Drinks: Two Large Drinks. Rest of the drinks are subsidized way below
menu rates. (Now isn't that a fair deal for all you teetotalers who
didn't wanna pay a bomb at all those Unlimited Drinks
party!)

Venue: Silver Bills Hall at Hotel Gold Finch, Seshadripuram, Bangalore

Route (Landmarks): MG Road = Hotel Taj Westend = Bangalore Turf Club
(aka Race Course) = Mallige Hospital = Hotel Gold Finch.

*DEMANDING:

- Government to provide free access to ART to all PLWHA.
- Stigma and discrimination against PLHA be immediately stopped.
- Children affected by or infected with HIV have access to their basic needs
including pediatric formulations of ART, care and support services,
education and survival support.
- Repeal Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code.
- Repeal Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.
- Government to protect the human rights of PLHA, sexworkers and sexuality
minorities.*

Worldwide every year, December 1st and December 10th are observed as World
Aids Day and International Human Rights Day respectively.

Indian constitution guarantees 'right to health' and 'right to life' to all
its citizens as fundamental rights. India is home to more than 50 lakh
People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) at present. At least 5 lakh of them are
in immediate need of ART (Anti-Retroviral Therapy, which can prolong their
life). Indian Government is providing ART to only 35 thousand persons at
present. Others are turned away by the Government ART centres. Most of them
are dying as they can't afford to buy ART in the market. The ART drugs are
very expensive as pharmaceutical MNCs are making huge profits using unfair
patent regimes. Who is responsible for this mass murder? MNCs who are
killing people for their profits? or our Governments which pursue
pro-globalization, pro-liberalization and pro-privatization policies that
increase corporate profits at the cost of our people? Should people die
because they are poor? Don't poor people qualify as 'citizens' of this
country?

PLHA face wide spread stigma, discrimination, violence and abuse at home,
workplace, in hospitals and on the street. Many women who are widowed due to
AIDS are thrown out on to the streets. Most PLHA live by hiding their HIV
status fearing rejection by the family, friends and society.

Children are worst affected by HIV/AIDS in India. Many children are orphaned
due to AIDS and many children are living with HIV infection. They are forced
to take ART formulations meant for adults in small doses as pediatric
formulations of the ART drugs are not available. Measuring pediatric doses
is a difficult task and prone to error, affecting the ART intake of
children. These children face severe stigma and discrimination and their
survival is a huge struggle.

Sexworkers and sexuality minorities are disproportionately affected and bear
the burden of HIV/AIDS. Indian laws criminalizing sexuality minorities
(Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code) and sexworkers (Immoral Traffic
[Prevention] Act) make them vulnerable to police harassment. Accessing
condoms and negotiating safer sex with partners is very difficult when they
are running all the time from street to street to escape from police and
goondas. Stigma, discrimination, harassment, violence, extortion, blackmail,
brutality and blatant human rights violations are common against sexworkers
and sexuality minorities, increasing their possibility of getting infected
with HIV.

Fighting HIV/AIDS just cannot be the responsibility of a few NGOs
