g_b London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival preview

London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival preview
http://scribe-kunstblog.blogspot.com/2008/03/london-lesbian-and-gay-film-festival.html

27 March - 10 April

Less than a week to go before the 22nd LLGFF at London's South Bank and
there is much to anticipate, from Alek Keshishian's rom-com *Love and Other
Disasters *to Angelina Maccarone's sensitive drama, *Vivere*.

Between these two bookends one finds an array of new queer films and
material ripe for reconsideration, with films by Seidelman, Bergman and
Altman given an airing.

Among the new offerings that catch the eye are: *Otto*, the latest from
aging enfant terrible Bruce LaBruce, in which a queer zombie runs amok in
Berlin; *Viva*, Anna Biller's feminist satire on 1970s' sexual mores; *A
Jihad for Love*, Parvez Sharma's doc which investigates the intersection of
Islam and queer identity; and *Derek*, Isaac Julien's doc on auteur Derek
Jarman.

Experimental filmmakers Bev Zalcock and Su Friedrich get retrospectives
looking at their decades-long practice, while other strands looks at Queer
Dance and Lezploitation. And there's even an all-night musical programme,
featuring such guilty pleasures as *Can't Stop the Music*, for those who
don't want to go to bed.

Of the films I have seen, highlights include the closing night gala, Vivere,
previously reviewed and recommended. Angelina Maccarone has built up an
enviable body of work as a writer/director and it's a mystery to me why she
is not as feted as Fatih Akin and other celebrated young German directors
and why her work has not reached a wider audience. Having appeared at the
LLGFF in 2006 with the brilliant *Unveiled*, she returns with three
intertwined stories of women on the road from Germany to Rotterdam over an
eventful Christmas.

Zero Chou won the Teddy at the 2007 Berlinale with *Spider Lilies*, a highly
stylised depiction of online lust and troubling reality between two women in
Taiwan.

Lucia Puenzo's *XXY*, Argentina's entry for the Academy Award, is a
ponderously paced but engaging drama of intersex identity and family
relations on an island off Uruguay.

*The World Unseen* (dir Shamim Sarif) features beautiful cinematography and
smouldering drama in South Africa. Adapted from her own novel, Sarif's film
looks at a growing attraction between two Asian women in 1950s South Africa.
As she explained to me, it's partly based on stories her parents told her of
living under apartheid and negotiating the thorny social structures.
Enjoyable, although the two leads appear to be acting in two different
films.

*A Walk into the Sea* is a very personal film by Esther Robinson exploring
her uncle Danny Williams' troubled and mysterious life. A fringe member of
Warhol's Factory, Williams shot several short films before he disappeared in
1966 while on a visit home. Robinson explained to me she wanted to make
space for his films in her documentary, and his previously unknown footage
appears for the first time, alongside sometimes conflicting interviews with
survivors of the Warhol scene.

g_b London Gay Pride Parade

2007-07-01 Thread G
The London Gay Parade.

I moved to London last Thursday to pursue my further education and I
am already loving this place. I was lucky that the very next Saturday
after I reached was the Gay Pride Parade day. I had heard a lot about
the parade so I headed straight to the Baker street to have fun.
When I reached the parade was just starting and I was at the rear end,
so I walked fast to close to the Trafalgar Square and found a nice
spot to see the parade. The whole experience was overwhelming! I had
never seen so many gay men and women together. There were thousands of
men and women having a great time being themselves.

There were men dresses in drag, skimpy red undies, traditional Asian
clothes and many more. Every one was smiling and having a great time.
What actually surprised me was the participation of various public
authorities. There were buses of gay men and lesbian working for the
Mayor of London, London Police, Royal Navy, Royal Air force, National
health system, fire brigade etc. There were companies like Braclays
with all the men dressed in skirts with makeup. Many organisation like
Naaz, Older gay and Lesbians association, gay doctors and dentists
association also had nice colourful buses and banners.

There were men and women in all sizes and shapes, young, juicy, beefy,
old, frail, wheel chaired, handicap, fat, kinky, sexy, colourfull……….
There were hundreds of spectators standing by the foot path and
cheering everyone and so were by passers with mixed reactions. Many of
them were enjoying the whole bang while only a few looked a bit
agitated. The parade happens in the centre of the London for which all
the main roads are completely closed. It terminated in the famous
Trafalgar Square where there was a music concert organised. All the
organisations who participated had stalls in the Square giving away
the brochures and information leaflets. It was amazing to see that the
whole of the square was turned in to a gay village where everyone was
having party.

I wept at the end, I was feeling so sorry that we in India can never
be so out and free. Back home I cant even introduce by boy friend to
anyone, he has to be a close friend only. I wish one day we shall all
be free to express our self in our home land.

Unfortunately I had not carried my camera otherwise I would have shown
you some pics.

Love

G

There are hundreds of gay bars in London, and there are a lot of gay Indians
there, however many are not out to their families and so do not go. There is a
gay Indian club night one Thursday of every month called Club Kali - they have
a website so google it and details will be on there.

Re: g_b London Accomodation

2006-01-13 Thread walnut

Joye,You will find lots of Estate Agents, you will have to explain them your requirements and budget and they will help u out..Also u will find lots of postings attached on the wall of the showrooms of the News Agents (News paper seller) There u will find the names of the contact persons, rent, location etc..everything. U need to call them, fix up an appointment and visit the area. The advertisement will sound something like "ROOMs TO LET" or "TO LET" which means someone wants to rent out his flat, house or just a single room on sharing or on non sharing basis.Hounslow is very famous in Middlesex (Where the movie Bend it like Beckham was shooted) There are lots of Indians and Pakistanis and they rent out one of the rooms of their Bunglows/Houses for paying guests. I guess for now...u must stay as PG, where in u dont have to worry about electric bill, water bill, entertainment tax etc. First of all buy some good Cell
Phone SIM Card, preferrably O2 or Vodafone, wherein u get some talk plans which allow u to call for free between 8PM to 8AM and some 500 SMSs free a month...u will require such a talk plan, as initially u will be required to call up many people until u get the place of ur choice. At the news agents and at the post offices u will get Weekly or Monthly 'Travel Card' It will allow u to travel by Tube (Metro rail), Buses, trams unlimited within ur zone. London is splitt across I guess 5-6 zones which are concentric in shapes...i.e. inner zone is Zone 1..the Zone 2 then Zone 3 etc.If u take a Travel card of ur Zone then u can not use it to travel across different zonesfor that matter u will have to club adjecent zones and take appropriate travel cardthe price will vary accordingly. But u better take the travel card immediately, it will save u lot of money.Let me know if I can be of any more help. Wish u good luck.

g_b London

2005-07-09 Thread Vikram
I hope every one on these lists who is in London is safe and has not
suffered loss or hurt to those close to them. When I first heard the
news I was worried about the friend my bf and I had stayed with in
London - he's gay, Muslim AND a tube-train driver, all vulnerable
categories now, for whatever reason. But he smsed me back soon saying
he was at home and safe.

An attack like this cuts across all communities and differences. Just
as bombs indiscriminately planted like this do not differentiate
between men and women, gay and straight, young and old, whatever
community they kill, neither should one's response to such an outrage
come from the perspective of a particular community.

But watching the news a small point occured to me and perhaps its
worth making to underline the difference between the people attacked
and the people doing the attacking yesterday, and to emphasise, if
emphasis was needed, where we should stand.

After the attacks, when the police came on air to state what was
known and what precautions were being taken, the main spokesman was
deputy assistant Met commissioner, Brian Paddick. Paddick is gay, the
seniormost openly gay police officer in the UK and one who has faced
problems in his time for this reason, but has overcome them to reach
his level.

His homosexuality obviously was not an issue at this moment of crisis
and that is the point - matters like sexuality should not be confused
with competance, and what mattered at this moment was that Paddick
was good at his job and not who he slept with. That's as it should be
and it is the answer to people who seem to imply that gay people are
less able to do certain jobs.

And second, if this was an attack by Islamic fundamentalists, then
this made clear the option being offered. On the one hand an ideology
which would have had men like Paddick put to death, on the other a
culture that gave him the same chance as it gave everyone else. I
respect and value political differences within the gay community, but
when it comes to fighting Islamic fundamentalism I cannot see how we
can have very different views.

Out of the tons that's been written on the bombs and London's
response, here's one particularly good one by Johann Hari, an
excellent young gay journalist who writes in The Independennt:

The attacks on London - and the battles to come
Johann Hari

The streets of the East End are silent, except for the whining chorus
of car alarms and sirens. Refugees from Aldgate station – one of the
mini-Ground Zeroes bleeding across London – are wandering past me,
caked in dust and soot and blood. This was supposed to be a day for
the causes of peace. It was supposed to be a day for Africa and
global warming and the ultimate symbol of peaceful competition, the
Olympic Games. Al Quaida has, it seems, decided to turn it into a day
for death.

At half past nine, I had walked past a small crowd outside my flat –
a few City boys with black briefcases, a hijab-wearing student, a
pensioner – on my way to breakfast. They are talking to a police
officer, who is mysteriously putting `Keep Out' tape next to my
road. Where did the explosion happen? a woman seems to be
asking. Everywhere, he says quietly. She looks puzzled. There have
been several… incidents, he says. Please step back.

It seems so incongruous that I assume there has been a gas explosion.
Nobody is panicking. Even the battered people trickling from the tube
have a look of bemused tranquillity. I cross the road. There is a
gaggle of people crowded around an open-topped car; the radio is on
full-blast. Then it becomes clear. This is the moment our politicians
said was Inevitable, Inevitable, Inevitable. The explosions were at
ten to nine, a woman says, apparently to herself, over the blare of
Radio 5. 9/11 was at ten to nine. Her voice is flat. It's
happened, hasn't it? Everybody is realising that they were only a
few minor decisions – a later train, an earlier bus – away from
dying. Nobody is crying. Nobody is screaming.

The odd etiquette of terror attacks quickly becomes clear. Strangers
make eye contact for slightly too long. They begin to talk awkwardly
about how close they were to the explosions; there seems almost to be
a subtle one-upmanship: Well, I always take that train. One man
still has a working mobile and he performs the most un-London of
acts: he offers it to people he has never met to make calls.

In the scarred miles between each explosion – walking from Moorgate

g_b London Pride Parade-Gallery

2005-07-06 Thread rock dj

These are some snaps from da 'Pride Parade' in London which happened last Saturday. They had floats, processions and finally a day long gathering at the Trafalgar Square.I was quite surprised to see some desi crowds, part of the NAZ group, I guess and a pink ambassador car making its way to the square.
A day that made it look like all good looking men/women are gay and the fact that being gay is not just all about sex with men, but its a whole lot about one's lifestyle and attitude towards life.
The day ended with a LIVE performance from ABBA..boi!that was a real treat!
