Re: g_b TOI: Sans females, men go gay in Mehsana
The individual to make this claim is a sociologist. Sociologists are notorious for making claims that imply causality when in reality it's purely a correlation. It's very unprofessional for TOI to publish this article with the heading Skewed sex ratio TURNING men gay. That being said, the bigger problem is how the article forecasts increase in HIV contraction just because gay men are having sex with each other. Gay men in Gujarat are aware of the dangers of STIs and condoms are easily accessible. Therefore it should figure that increase in sexual activity shouldn't increase the chances of contracting STIs unless there has been a marked decrease in condom use. Did the sociologist care to investigate that before making his homophobic statement? Obviously not. Then there is the sensational statement from the doctor, Mr. Amrish Tripathi. Less than half of his patients admit to having sexual relations with men, but it's never even mentioned whether they are exclusively homosexual. The statistics of such a study would be inevitably flawed because there are way too many variables which the sociologist has chosen to ignore. This is apart from the fact that most of Mr. Tripathi's patients are exclusively straight. It's infuriating that these poorly qualified individuals have the accessibility to state that a skewed sex ratio is turning men gay, consequently pissing upon the hard work an array of gay rights activists, psychologists and scientists do to investigate the causes of homosexuality and prove that it's not a disease that's 'contractible'. Shame on the Times of India for letting this article to be published. Regards, anonm

I always find that statistics are hard to swallow and impossible to digest. The only one I can ever remember is that if all the people who go to sleep in church were laid end to end they would be a lot more comfortable. ~Mrs. Robert A. this is pure piece of sheet First of all a man of 30 years can marry to female of 18 to 30 years - so how is the ratio calculated secondly i dont think men became gay as there are no females otherwise military forces of all countries will become gay thridly - if females are not there for marrage and males r hungry for sex - the first preference will be for prostute or call girl - now a days even high class house wifes are into this profession fourthly - gay is a feeling inside of a man - it cant be developed due to such reasons this is nonsence - Nitin Karani [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Ahmedabad/Sans_females_men_go_gay_in_Mehsana/articleshow/3234150.cms AHMEDABAD: The 2001 census ranked Mehsana as the district with the worst skewed sex ratio of just 801 women per 1000 men. The after effects are being seen now, with the north Gujarat town witnessing a marked increase in gay activity. All thanks to the dearth of eligible brides because of rampant foeticide over the years. Trends show that many affluent Mehsana men in their 30s are now wining and dining gays from Ahmedabad. Suresh (name changed), a prominent figure in the gay circuit of Ahmedabad, is now being sought out frequently by unmarried men from Mehsana. I get at least eight to 10 calls each month from Mehsana who pick me up from Ahmedabad. We check into guest houses on the Ahmedabad-Mehsana highway, says Suresh, who works in a cloth merchant's office in Kalupur. Most of them prefer men over women as taking female sex workers to guest houses is risky, adds Suresh, who says there are at least half a dozen men like him in Ahmedabad who regularly entertain clients from Mehsana. Increasing homosexuality is seen as the reason why Mehsana ranks after the migrant hub of Surat in terms of HIV prevalence. Mehsana's men have been known to buy brides from tribal areas, as there is an acute shortage of girls in most communities. While homosexuality is increasing everywhere, in the case of Mehsana the skewed sex ratio could be fuelling this trend further, says sociologist Gaurang Jani. Ahmedabad-based doctors, too, admit to getting male patients from Mehsana suffering from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). I must have treated around 200 men from Mehsana for various STDs and even AIDS in the last one year. Nearly half of them admitted to having relations with other men, says doctor Amrish Tripathi, who is working with HIV/AIDS patients. -- My blog's at: http://queerindia.blogspot.com You can leave me a voice message from any phone at http://www.jaxtr.com/nitinkarani No call charges apply.
