g_b GB Sunday meet - special for two reasons
This coming week, on 19th April, the Supreme Court is due to start hearings on the Delhi High Court's verdict decriminalising homosexuality. The Court will be hearing the 15 appeals against the verdict but, significantly, no appeal from the Indian government and our defence of it, which be done by the lawyers for the two original petitioners from our side, Naz India and Voices Against 377, and now four parties that have entered petitions in our support: Shyam Benegal, a group of 14 mental health professionals, a group of 16 academics and teachers and, not least of all, the 19 parents of gay, lesbian and transgender children, which has been specially supported by GB. (This Sunday Barkha Dutt will do a session of her show We the People devoted to the parents petition and the parents of gay, lesbian and transgender children in general. Harish from these lists will be on it with his mother, and many other parents we know, like Chitra Palekar. NOT TO BE MISSED!). This, in a sense, is the point to which we have been working for the last 10 years. We always knew the case would end up in the Supreme Court, but when we started we didn't know who would be appealing our opponents, or us! In the event, we have got the wonderful and acclaimed Delhi High Court verdict, and it is our opponents doing the appealing. We have got a great bunch of young lawyers who are preparing for the case, we have the seniormost lawyers in the country appearing for us for free, we have the official backing of sections of the government like the Ministry of Health, and we have a lot of support from influential people, both openly and behind the scenes. Our opponents are a motley bunch, including many clearly in it only for self promotion. There are religious groups, but nearly all extreme and not really representative members of their religion. The one exception is the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, and it is, along with 2-3 others, among the petitions that must be taken seriously. Motley bunch or not, and absurd as many of their petitions are, the sheer number and vehemence of our opponents is not to be taken lightly. They will do their best, using whatever means they can, in court and in the media, to discredit us and the Delhi High Court verdict. It is going to be a real battle, and perhaps what is most unnerving of all is that we have absolutely no idea what the Supreme Court might feel. We have hopes, we have guesses about the judges assigned to the case (though it looks like there is a last minute change here too) and we have all our work and the weight of senior lawyers behind us. And we still only know that it will be a real fight, and all we can do outside the court is support it in any way we can, in the media, online, in response to homophobic statements, with personal arguments with people we know. Having said all this, I should caution people not to get too worked up. While the case is scheduled for the 19th, it is just possible that the hearing may not happen then. The Court is particularly busy now, with the 2G matter and other important issues, and it's not impossible the matter might be deferred. Even if it is heard, we have no idea how much time they will give and we certainly have no idea when any verdict may come it could easily be months. But as of the time I'm posting this, the case stands to be taken up next week, and we should be ready. So this Sunday's GB meet is going to focus on the case, and what we can do to support it outside the courts. We won't have any expert opinion, but we can share the petitions and discuss what they mean and look at some of the loony things our opponents have said, and how we can counter them. It will be an informal, relaxed session, and people can ask any questions they like, and if we can't answer them, we'll find answers for you later. But if you have any interest in the 377 case, don't miss coming for this meet. There is also another reason, more personal for GB, why this meet will be special. Many of you who come for our meets will remember how we have often had them at the house in Bandra of the aunt of one of GB's members. This really lovely lady, called by everyone Muni Bua, has been hosting our meetings for years, making us feel welcome in her house, taking time to talk to a lot of guys who were having problems with their families and helping us, in particular, have the parents meetings that have become such an important part of what GB does. We can even say that she had a crucial role in helping GB become what it is today. This is really ancient history, but for those who don't know it, GB started off as in informal group that would meet in a public space to talk about the issues facing us as gay men in Mumbai. That meeting place was at first McDonald's in Bandra their first outlet in Mumbai, which had just opened then! and that worked fine for the first few meetings, but they
g_b GB Sunday Meet on HIV at Bandra
Gaybombay has had meets on aspects relating to HIV for years now - safe sex, STDs, testing, living with HIV. And at all these meets we've been aware that there are people who really wanted to come, but were too nervous, or wanted to speak up and ask questions, but again didn't dare. Its the sort of feeling we are familiar with since it is, in a way, like being back in the closet again. Many of those who felt this way have been HIV+ve themselves. Some have been so many years, some only tested recently, some are on medication, some are not, some are just unclear and confused and scared. And some are not positive, but know someone who is - a close friend, maybe a partner. And some may just really want to know more HIV. We've realised that we need to have a meeting for all these people, but one which is a little bit more private than the regular GB meeting. Day, Date Time Sunday, 9 January 2011, between 5 to 8 pm Venue: Bandra Please note this is not a meeting only for HIV+ve people, nor does coming to the meeting identify you as being HIV+ve. Absolute NO pressure will be put on anyone to come out about being HIV+ve - in fact, we would discourage it and recommend that people who do want to speak more openly about their status do so in more private conversations with people they feel they can trust from the meet. And in case anyone does come out about their status at the meet, everyone present will be expected to treat it as strictly confidential. One person who will be identifying himself as HIV +ve at the meeting is the person who will lead it - Jay Vithalani, a gay man from Mumbai, now living in the US, who has had a long association with GB. Jay is not just openly HIV +ve, but is exceptionally well informed on the subject and has had a lot of experience in helping others learn how to inform themselves about the disease and how to cope with it. At the meeting Jay will speak a bit about his personal experience and suggests strategies for people on how to learn to live with the disease. But in general the meeting will be entirely open and free flowing with questions, no matter how basic, encouraged and answered as best as we can. We will try and identify practical information for people in Mumbai, including relevant doctors, support groups and sources of help. The meeting is not a lecture, but a collaborative excercise, helping us find solutions that will work for HIV +ve gay men in Mumbai. If you feel that in any way at all this is something that might be relevant to you, or to people you know, you really should not miss this meet. g_b GB Sunday meet on 11th October, on Coming Out Day
This Sunday's GB meet will be the usual relaxed fun Sunday meet in Bandra but we will have a bit of a focus. October 11th has been designated (not sure by who) Coming Out Day in the US, and taking out inspiration from that we'll be talking about coming out this Sunday. Let me state upfront that GB takes no strong position on coming out. We feel that, in a general way, its the best thing to do, but we recognise that everyone has personal circumstances and levels of comfort that will dictate when you want to come out. There's no requirement at any GB meet - even this Coming Out Day one - that you have to be out or intend to come out. What we will do though is talk about it. How you did it (if you have). Why you don't want to (if you haven't). Tactics on how to do it. Warnings about how not to do it. Discussions on how to handle friends or partners who have or haven't done it. How to do it in groups (oops, maybe wrong sort of doing it). How to handle things if it happens by accident. And whether doing it makes all that much difference. So whether you've done it or not, come and discuss it at the GB meet this Sunday. The Sunday Meet at Bandra! Day, Date Time: Sunday 11 October 2009, between 6:00 and 6:30 pm Venue: JATC (Just Around The Corner), Near St. Theresa's Church, Dr. K. B. Hedgewar Road, We will meet at JATC and go from there to a friend's house where we can talk more openly.
