But wouldn't it be better to reject --disable-threads in configure with an
appropriate error message rather than getting link failures far into the
build?

I've noticed the same problem on IRIX 6.5 (which still uses
THREADS=single), cf. PR libgcj/21935.

I tried the same thing with gcc 4.1.0 and I got the same result.
