I think a number of people here can relate to this sentiment. When I was a
child, one of my bedrooms was white with pink roses. I hated it so much, I
slept in a closet..literally, by choice. As a teenager I was raised by my
father and teal and black were the shades of choice. To this very day I wear
black most days and I prefer "fuchsia" over pink. But, I must admit, I love
the smell of roses.

I don't believe any of us want an uber-femme Wikipedia to be a tool to
encourage contributors. I do really like the idea of expanding on skin
options, and I do think the option of having a "user friendly" look can help
improve contributions (just like the visual editor..which I have missed a
demo of..twice).

In a fantasy world it'd be really neat to demo different skins and user
experiences with women of all ages - usability studies (like we do at the
Archives of American Art with researchers of all ages and experience
levels). I suppose that will be the only way we'll know if aesthetics,
functionality and usability matter when it comes to women contributing to
Wikipedia.

I find I'm not really girly girly all that much. Pink and purple used to be
my absolute favorite colors, for example, but now "Pretty much shade of
blue" fills a slot above them. Of course, at least in America, blue=baby
boy, know what I mean?

What I'm trying to say is, sometimes somebody who's comfortable with being a
woman isn't always going to fulfill the "fluff, rainbow, unicorns, and
sparkles!" stereotypical of how a woman should act. I don't want a backlash
in response to this sort of concern severe enough that I feel uncomfortable
editing.

Re: [Gendergap] Dubious talk page discussions (was:Re: An example of clothed model in medical document)

2011-09-15 Thread Emily Monroe
I will very rarely delete conversations that violate common talk page sense
(ie, talk only about the article, and not the subject of the article, don't
try to contact the subject of a BLP article, etc.). I then put a template or
two on the talk page, like {{Not a forum}}, or {{Q&A}}. Really, the only
reason for the rarity of this action is the fact that I don't see it very
often.

Re: [Gendergap] wikisource

2011-09-15 Thread Pete Forsyth
Me too!! I've been doing a bunch of Wikisource work lately, and am
continually impressed by the level of civility and all-around helpfulness of
those folks.

Some of the tasks that take place in Wikisource require a little more
technical knowhow than the other projects, so it's great to have a group of
folks who will patiently walk you through that stuff.

They have a great IRC channel, too -- that one and Gendergap are the
channels I've been keeping open lately. For anyone who speaks any French --
one of the things I enjoy in the Wikisource IRC channel is the pleasant mix
of English and French discussions that take place.

Re: [Gendergap] Wikifashion

2011-09-15 Thread Nicole Willson
As a wikiHowian, I can speak to this a bit. Although I can't speak for Jack,
I have my own aversions to purple girly welcome messages and I think this
reasoning is seen on other wiki projects.

On wikiHow we have struggled to have professional looking welcome messages.
I think the worst of it was one that had a picture of a bunny and said
"follow the bunny to wikiHow" or something like that. So, I think that view
may have (at least for me) trickled down even to welcome messages that are
a "girly" color", since I am concerned that girliness and even just girly
colors will cause wikiHow to be taken less seriously as a project.

The funny thing, however, is that one of the "girlier" welcome messages I've
seen (pastel background, '<3') is one that was created by a male wikiHowian
and no one seems to have any problem with it so far that I know of.

As one of the females in the male-dominated wiki world, I have sometimes
felt that I've had to put my girliness aside in order to be taken seriously.
I also feel that there is a backlash against girly pink userpages and the
like on wiki projects and that generalizations are made about people based
on their username or userpage and not on their contributions to the wiki.

Re: [Gendergap] Wikiquotes

2011-09-15 Thread John Vandenberg
Kathleen is a great example of how the English Wikisource community
differs from English Wikipedia.

She was appointed as a sysop in August 2008, after only ~30 'user
talk' messages, and only 5 'talk' messages.

http://en.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3AContributions&target=Kathleen.wright5&namespace=1
http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Wikisource:Administrators/Archives/Kathleen.wright5

(note that we have annual re-confirmation of sysop status)

In the last three years since becoming a sysop, Kathleen has only
needed to block five people and delete 100 pages, and that is
sufficient reason for her to keep the tools in our quiet backwater of
the wiki world.

Re: [Gendergap] Wikiquotes

2011-09-15 Thread Dominic
Hey all, check out Wikisource's main page right now. :-) There are
several users whose gender I don't know, but one of Wikisource's
currently most active editors, and an administrator, is
kathleen.wright5. One of its bureaucrats and village elders is also a
woman, BirgitteSB. Inspired by some of the uploads from the National
Archives, we recently created a women's suffrage portal
(http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Portal:Women%27s_suffrage), which is
slightly misnamed, because a few other documents from related
non-suffrage political activism have been since added.

I think several of the sister projects are actually places where it
would be easier for women to thrive than the English Wikipedia,
especially Wikisource and Wikiquote. These are small communities that
have the luxury of nurturing newcomers (and lack the culture of
competitive patrolling which puts off newbies), have less bureaucracy,
and have less conflict. We can only speculate, but I think a main reason
that there is a gender gap on such other projects is just because most
projects live in Wikipedia's shadow and new editors only find them
through becoming Wikipedia contributors, and those demographics carry over.

I love Wikisource. It might be my favorite wikiproject. I met John there
way back in 2007 when I was adding poems by Paul Laurence Dunbar, and adding
children stories. :-)

I need to see what I can related to my most recent women's articles on WP.

Re: [Gendergap] Wikiquotes

2011-09-15 Thread Sydney Poore
There is a portal feminism on Wikisource but it is very under developed.

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Portal:Feminism

See Josephine K. Henry added to the portal by me in March 2010.

 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Josephine_K._Henry

http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Author:Josephine_K._Henry

The portal is not been edited very much since then.

I wrote about Nannie Helen Burroughs on WP and WQ.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nannie_Helen_Burroughs

http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Nannie_Helen_Burroughs

One way to do it is to write an Wikipedia article, upload images to Commons,
add their published works to Wikisource, and an entry on Wikiquote with good
quotes. It is a very efficient way to do it.

I've done it in the past for a few people. It is a great way to meet new
people on the other projects.

Ahhh, a topic worth talking about! If we want more women in our
community, I very strongly believe that wikisource is our greatest
chance of bringing them in. librarians and local studies in Australia

Speaking of topics that need expansion, there are still HUGE gaps in
Wikipedia's coverage of art outside of the United States. For example,
there are no articles for "Mexican art", "Polish art", "Swiss art", etc.
(not even stubs!) and don't even bother looking for African, South

But could things be downcased unless there's a good reason not to? See en.WP
Manual of Style and most other authorities. Ta.

That's a great start!

One thing I'd do... our "acronym soup" can be enormously confusing. I have a
tendency to write " enwp.org/WP:BLP ", for instance, but an outsider might need
to see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Biographies_of_Living_Persons -
it's easier for the mind to parse.

I shortened the URLs mostly because this was intended as a print resource. The
fewer the letters, the less likely people are to get frustrated with typing. :)
