[Gendergap] Other (non -male or -female) Gender Knowledge for Study

2014-09-23 Thread Tim Davenport
Assuming that you are not studying the matter of gender self-identification
itself (i.e. the dynamics of the count of the very small number of people
who do not consider themselves either male or female), it seems to me that
a survey over time should tally (self-identified) MALE / FEMALE / DECLINE
TO RESPOND.

The "Decline to Respond" category will be extremely significant -- a far
bigger threat to generation of an accurate count than the loss of the
fraction of 1% of Wikipedians who consider themselves neither here nor
there on the matter of gender.

This is, of course, not particularly "sensitive to the many categories of
non-male and non-female genders that exist in Wikipedia," which you
apparently presume to exist a priori.

2014-09-23 Thread Megan Wacha
Hi Max,

I haven't studied these decisions, but I try to be sensitive to these
issues and am happy to provide some thoughts.

Would you ask editors to provide this information? If so, I would ask them
to self identify - as a man, as a woman, [fill in the blank], or decline to
answer. I realize that a [fill in the blank] option poses some issues, but
I believe it's the most inclusive. I strongly encourage you to avoid the
term 'other' as it is so very loaded. I would also recommend using man and
woman in place of male and female, which refer to sex and not gender.

I hope you've received helpful feedback from others and that you'll share
your paper with the list.

Best,
Megan

Hi Megan,

If I were asking editors to Identify I would definitely believe in giving a
blank text field to enter. However that is not the purpose of this study, I
am merely looking at Wikipedia *Biography Articles*. That is statistics of
what is recorded in Wikidata, and then trying to compare it to other Gender
Equality Indexes.

2014-09-23 Thread Amanda Menking
Max,

You may want to use Category tags such as
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Transgender_and_transsexual_people,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Women,
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Men.

Imperfect, but a start?

Best,
Amanda

[Gendergap] Gender Gap Strategy: Next Steps!

2014-09-23 Thread Alex Wang
Hi All,

At this year's Wikimania, over 40 Wikimedians helped prioritize ideas and
identified 7 key gender gap initiatives to work on.

We’ve created a page that summarizes gender gap strategy activities
to-date, lists the initiatives, and organizes teams:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Gender_gap_strategy

We realize not everyone who cares about this issue was there to
participate. We would love to get your input and support. *Please take a
look at the page and sign up if you're interested! *

Once teams are developed, we’ll be in touch to help brainstorm next steps
and help support you as initiatives move forward.

Thank you again for your commitment to addressing the gender gap!

Cheers,

Alex & Siko
