Apologies for my bad English. English is not my mother tongue.

The part about women being subservient is actually quite pervasive in

 1 Peter 3:1-6
 1 Timothy 2:11-14
 Colossians 3:18
 Ephesians 5:22-23
 1 Corinthians 14:33-35
 1 Corinthians 11:3-10
 Isaiah 19:16
 Deuteronomy 22:20-21
 Genesis 3:16
 Genesis 2:18
This is certainly not a novel interpretation. Indeed it seems very
difficult to argue that the Bible does not consider women subservient to
 men.

The part about beards is Old Testament and only taken seriously by
 Orthodox Christians, Amish, Mennonites, etc.

The part about putting adulterers to death is also Old Testament and
obviously not taken seriously by most Christians, although John Calvin
did argue that the Bible justified the death penalty for adultery (as
 have other Christians historically).

All that said, I am not trying to imply that modern Christianity is an
oppressive religion. I'm just saying that historically, it has a few
skeletons in its closet and it went through some serious growing pains,
 as is Islam.

Dear Fred,

We have 'n' number of mailing lists and forums to discuss politics and
religion. I am subscribing to many such mailing lists, and I take part in
active discussion in them. But now that we are here in gender gap mailing
list to discuss about women participation in Wikimedia projects, let us not
entertain off topic discussion. Let's discuss just enough politics and
religion that may concern gender gap issues on Wikimedia projects - not
more.

Thank you.

Malayalam Wikipedia takes a gender turn

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: As part of this year's women's day celebrations,
Malayalam Wikipedians have launched a month-long edit-a-thon, a drive to
expand articles of importance to women. The project aims to introduce more
women to Malayalam Wikipedia, create new articles related to women, expand
the existing stubs and translate English articles to Malayalam.

Launched in tune with Wikipedia's Wiki Women's History Month projects,
Wikipedians worldwide are organizing similar events.

Though Malayalam Wikipedia is one of the most active languages Wikipedia,
the number of women editors are below a dozen. Of these, only one or two
 are active editors.

Netha Hussain, Kozhikode-based medical student, who is the torchbearer of
project in Malayalam, agreed that only a few women are active in Malayalam
Wikipedia. The project aims to introduce more women to Wikipedia. A list
of topics, which needs to be expanded, edited etc, has been prepared.
Biography of prominent women and translation of biographies are all part of
 the event, Netha said.

Usha Titus, M T Padma, K K Lathika, J Arundhati, Malethu Sarala Devi,
Rosamma Chacko, Jameela Prakasham are some of the prominent women included
in list of personalities to be included in Wikipedia as part of the drive,
which will conclude on March 31. Articles of a number of women, including
Tessy Thomas, Mercy Ravi, Ajitha, Parvathy Omanakuttan etc, will be
expanded. Biographies of award-winning women, people's representatives, etc
will be translated from English to Malayalam. Surprisingly, except Netha
and Ditty Mathew from Kochi, all others who have joined the edit-a-thon so
 far are men.

I love to collect information, and I love that I get to share that
information with the world, says Emily Temple-Wood, a veteran editor on
English Wikipedia. Emily, who likes reading encyclopedias from
cover-to-cover, finds writing on Wikipedia a transition from being a
consumer to a creator of knowledge.

Her first attempt at writing on Wikipedia was in 2005, when she was 10
years old. She wrote a page about her little sister saying that she was a
stupid butthead, which got removed from Wikipedia instantly. As she grew
older, she knew that she could do more productive things on Wikipedia.

In 2007, when Emily Temple-Wood created an account on Wikipedia, she was
just 12 years old. She started off by categorizing and cleaning up existing
wikipedia articles. Eventually, she found it and useful to contribute
knowledge to Wikipedia. Her first interest was endangered languages. She
created several articles related to endangered languages and became
dedicated to Wikipedia.

Emily, now 19, has written over 200 articles on Wikipedia. Lately, she has
been writing about rare genetic diseases, Islamic history and mythology.
Her pet project is Wikiproject: Women
scientistshttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Women_scientists,
an initiative to create and expand articles about women scientists.
WikiProject Women Scientists is growing into a nice space for contributing
to this less-covered area and we are gaining some active participants, so
that is great! I'm so glad to be a part of something that is making a real
difference on Wikipedia, she says. She is also an administrator on
Wikipedia, a trusted editor who has been granted the technical ability to
perform special actions on English Wikipedia.

Emily is an undergraduate student at the Loyola University in Chicago,
majoring in molecular biology with additional two minors : Arabic and
Islamic world studies. She aspires to go to graduate school and get an MD/
PhD in medicine to fulfil her dream of becoming research physician. She has
basic knowledge of Arabic, Korean and French and wants to be a fluent
speaker of these three languages someday. She is undergoing training as an
emergency medical technician along with her undergraduate studies. Because
of the many real-life commitments, Emily is not being able to spend as much
time for writing articles as she wants.

First of all, I schedule time to edit, either with workshops or with
friends. Editing with friends makes it a lot easier to make the time for
it. I also edit as I read. Like many of us, I use Wikipedia every day to
look up facts and whenever I see something that needs to be fixed, I do it.
Treating my editing as a social endeavor has been really helpful and
definitely motivates me to contribute more, and I think that's my message
to fellow women. Have fun together while editing - enjoy food and drink and
socialize! Some people take Wikipedia too seriously and make it an
anti-social space a lot of the time, so you can counter that by enjoying
wiki-socialization in real life and being serious online., says Emily when
asked about how she manages her time to be able to do a variety of
real-life and online volunteering.

She is also a Individual Engagement
Granteehttps://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IEG of
the Wikimedia Foundation http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Home, the
not-for-profit organization that hosts Wikipedia. In her role as a grantee,
she is aiming to create a new model for bringing women into the Wikimedia
movement and creating more content to fill the coverage gap with topics
related to women, especially biographies of women. She is trying to change
the gender situation

Re: [Gendergap] [Research] The encyclopedia must fail! - Notes on queering Wikipedia

2014-07-16 Thread Netha Hussain
Dear all,

This follow up mail is in response to a couple of queries I received
offlist. I thought I would share this on-list to avoid possible
misunderstandings.

First off, this article is not my perspective. I shared this article
because I thought that this might be of interest to many members of this
list.

Second, the article seems to have a few factual inaccuracies:

1. Quoting from the article : *By January 2012, having become a regular
contributor, I decided to create an article on Bama. Within a few minutes
of creating the article, it was nominated for deletion (Wikipedia). In the
next two days, I argued my way out of my first Wikipedia deletion and the
article survived. While having repeatedly heard about the unevenness of the
Wikipedia’s knowledge geographies and the presence of fervent deletionism,
that someone would decide Bama, a pioneer of marginalized women voices and
a noted author with multiple web links, mentions and more, not noteworthy
by Wikiverse standards within minutes of its creation, baffled me*.

The edit history of this article gives me a different picture altogether.
It looks like the deletion tag was placed not because of lack of
notability, but because the BLP was unsourced. The author mentions that
they argued for two days to make it survive, but I do not see any evidence
of a discussion on the talk page of the article. It occurs as if the author
removed the deletion tag minutes after it was placed, by adding one
citation. Ref :
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Bama_%28writer%29diff=470061279oldid=470061005
Systemic bias against articles about women from non-English speaking
countries does exist on English Wikipedia, but I guess this example is
insufficient to prove this point.

2. Quote : For two self-identified female editors including the author, it
seemed logical to include news reports of the potency tests conducted on
Asaram since details of the victim’s hymen examination existed already.
However, as one male-identified editor, Mr K. argued...

The username of the author, as seen on the archive is User: Dr.K and not
Mr.K. I do not find an instance on this user's userpage where they self
identified as male. I do not find any evidence where the two editors in
question self identified as female, either (Correct me if I am wrong here). The
research may have tried to establish that the masculine voice of the editor
tried to silence a feminine perspective, but this example, like the
previous one, is not sufficient to prove this point. Ref :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Asaram_Bapu/Archive_4

I placed a comment on the original article 9 days ago pointing these out,
but it looks as if it is still awaiting moderation :-(

That said, the article gave me many interesting perspectives. + 1 to
Valerie for the quote : I found it this quote as the best among all. I also
greatly appreciate the hard work that went into the creation of this
research paper.

Netha

 Nice article.

As far as the example for BLP related interference is concerned, there
is so much against Asaram - the argument has no value. It is about
 facts and not inferences.

Also, there are so many criminal cases in court against Asaram - these
 must all be documented :-)

 Even the ones mentioned in
 http://www.frontline.in/cover-story/asarams-empire/article5137420.ece
are not covered in the controversies section.
