AV is dead, long live AV!

Have you ever submitted a sample of malware to virustotal that has gotten
through all the AV & SPAM filters? Usually, if it makes it through
relatively good defenses, it takes days for it to be detected by most of
the AV vendors.

Heuristics are more important than file matches nowadays. Companies like
fireEye make their living on opening up samples in a sandbox, then alerting
after the fact that something got through.

Earlier this month BitTorrent client Transmission got compromised with a a
crypto locker that infected macs. It waited 3 days before connecting to C&C
servers and to encrypt user files. That time really could be random and it
may be difficult to figure out when the system got infected and how far to
go back with your backups.

If you can restore to a known pre-incident state, at least you’ve limited
your loss. At least losing a few hours of data from the backup delta is
better than losing months.

My current backup strategy is this:

1. Concurrent backup maintained offsite

2. Nightly backup on site.

3. Once per day backup pulled via rsync to an NAS that’s read-only to
the network. This drive maintains seven days of system data that nothing
on the network can change.

I’m seeing reports that the latest crypto malware has been seen encrypting
disks and decrypting them on the fly for a while before triggering - if
this waits 7 days to trigger then my backup scheme is DOA because the rsync
NAS will have pulled corrupted copies.

I’m thinking that it’s time to look at tape backups again.

Haha.. Yeah I have considered geoblocking but it’s really useless anyway. Most

[brlug-general] SPAM (was wall mounted windows)

2016-03-29 Thread Edmund Cramp
We’re commercial with customers and agents worldwide (including in China) so
geo-blocking is not an option although since we run our own mail server it
would be easy to do. I find that these attacks come and go - in general we see
a few crypto attempts most days and some spearfishing every now and then - what
got my attention today was that these .js attachments have started coming in at
a very much higher rate than normal - the .doc and .exe attachment rates
haven’t changed.

Before I started blocking *.js at the mail-server about 6 months ago the AV
software was consistently letting them through - and some of the emails with
these have looked very realistic, QuickBooks credit card settlements and unpaid
invoices. People are going to open these.

I’m rethinking by backup strategies - real-time and daily backups are no
defense against these if they get through.

That’s not many. We get about 80 an hour. (well not quite but we get a few
dozen per hour). I’ve had to lock down our attachment policies from our 3rd
