Did this stabilize since I set the number of background updaters to 0? If
so, we could think about trying 5 (which is what Brutus had). Or, ought we
just leave well alone for now?

BTW: We can limit the number of background threads (to none, if needed) for
updates by editing the workspace definition.

 logfiles are in ~gump/20050619.

 This time it looks as if the midnight run Sunday morning died during
 updates or syncs and didn't clean up after itself.  The noon run then
 made it into the updates and starved because of the locks left over
 from midnight.
