Hi,

I just noticed that BlueSky did not report anything since being voted
into incubation in January and is not linked from the incubator
website.
There is activity, on-list and in svn.
I posted to their dev list to ping the people there.

So, I guess they'd need to report for the next three months?

[jira] Commented: (INCUBATOR-78) Unreliable report schedule and list of podlings

As a suggestion, each incubating project could have a status file at
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/PROJECT/trunk/INCUBATOR-INFO.txt,
where PROJECT is the project name.

It's easy to verify with a script that this file is present, and putting it in
the project's trunk makes it visible to and easily maintainable by the project
community, as opposed to something that's stored away in incubator/trunk.

The info might be something like:

name: Buzzword
description: Buzzword is a framework to create buzzword-compliant webapps in
Java

incubation-status: incubating

Projects could use svn:externals to link their status file from a location in
incubator/trunk into their project tree. Then people who just want to track the
status files don't have to check out each project trunk individually.

While it would also be possible to use svn:externals in incubator/trunk to link
to all the status files in the project trunks, that would create yet another
metadata location.

With your proposal, if the svn:externals are not setup correctly, a project
might be missing without it being noticed.

The idea with
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/PROJECT/trunk/INCUBATOR-INFO.txt is
to use a recursive wget job, for example, which starts at
http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator, visits all subfolders and checks for
that file.

In this case, as soon as a project has an svn repository there, the script can
check its status file and complain if absent or incomplete - this would make it
impossible for projects to be missed, as is the case now.

I don't think it's an imposition or a burden to remind people that
as a podling they have responsibilities to the incubator. And if
they see that they're not even on the page, it might catalyze some
positive behavior.

Heya, I'm new so I thought I just lurk and don't comment,
but these were my exact thoughts when we ran into the
issue of having to produce a report quickly with CouchDB.

Especially with new projects that have their heads swirling
from all the new things they must learn with the ASF and
the Incubator it is understandable that they don't have this
on their radar and a simple email notification sounds like
a good problem to solve this.

Hi,

expressed at yesterday's board meeting.

It seems like the schedule of incubator podling reports to the
board,
as well as the list of incubating projects at [2] is not very
reliable

- probably due to the well-known redundant and scattered metadata
problem.

For example, it seems like Pig had never reported before, although
it's been incubating for a few months, as it was missing from the
wiki

reporting schedule page [1] (*blush* - I'm a mentor for that
project...).

Recent discussions also show that Rat is missing from the incubator
home page, and the status of Composer seems unclear.

Having a master status file and generating the reporting schedule,
project status overview (including mentors names) might be a nice
way
to have a traceable single point of maintenance for this data. And/
or

maybe deriving part of this info from svn setup and authorizations.

Assuming there's agreement on the problem, do we have any volunteers
for working on that?

Note that some incubator projects don't currently have trunk directories.
This probably needs to be sorted out.

Having the file under trunk means that it will appear in branches and tags, and
will probably appear in releases as well.
This may or may not be seen as a problem.

Might be worth considering storing the file at the same level as trunk?
This is a bit more awkward to edit (need to check out non-recursively) but is
easier to find when navigating SVN.
