The package renaming was completed on the 2.7 branch, which is
expected to be release soon.
The package name still remains "com.alibaba.*" for 2.6.x branch, which
is a maintenance branch.

Package names were changed in the master branch.
2.6.5 is still the patch release.
2.7.x could be the one which use the new "org.apache" packages.

Re: How to review so-called "binary releases"?

2018-11-21 Thread Carlos Santana
You could split the review in 2 emails

1. Vote as ASF on the release of the source tgz artifact and release
2. Ask for a review on the publishing of a binary artifact based on the source
tgz from email vote #1 (this is not a ASF Vote, just a request for review a
binary) this email of course would be after email #1 is vote closed.

 I see this as a two-level thing:

 a) The source release is an Act of the Foundation, it is what the
 foundation produces

 b) For the binaries, the PMC states that it thinks they are good and
declares that the published digests and signatures are the correct
ones. The Foundation does not state anything about them - use at your
own risk but in practice that risk is very low if the PMC members
 collectively recommend using them.

That's not very different from what other open source projects do - we
need a) for our legal shield but b) is exactly like random open source
 projects operate.

You have to trust an open source project when you use their binaries,
and you can use digests and signatures to verify that those binaries
are the same that everyone else uses - I don't think anyone provides
more guarantees than that, except when you pay for someone to state
 that those binaries are good.

If people agree with this view we might need to explain this better,
"unofficial" does not mean much, this two-level view might be more
 useful.

NOTICE attribution for derived work from CC-BY originals?

2018-11-21 Thread Stian Soiland-Reyes
Dave and others,
remember this old thread (see below)

Taverna is revisiting this old license issue and think we've come round to a
way to avoid distributing CC-BY code, but would instead distribute our
Derived Work by hard-coding what was previosuly auto-generated Java code.

As CC-BY unlike CC-BY-SA (share-alike) then only require attribution we
then only need to keep the attribution - this would most naturally then
go into NOTICE rather than LICENSE as the CC-BY license do not apply to
the derived work (and the attribution also applies to the *.class files
in the JAR)

Obviously the wording in NOTICE then needs to be precise to not imply
that the generated *.java is CC-BY licensed (they would have the regular
Apache file header)

Would you be able to comment on if the approach in
https://github.com/apache/incubator-taverna-language/pull/43
https://github.com/apache/incubator-taverna-language/blob/no-ontologies/NOTICE#L11
would be a good way forward?

I'm seeing a lot of "com.alibaba..." in the build logs and very little
"org.apache...". I thought the packaging renaming was completed some
time ago. Am I missing something?

Builds from tag without errors.

Hashes match.

Signatures are good.
(Key is not in web of trust)

Source distribution matches git tag with the expected exception of the
Maven wrapper files.

Release specific wiki page:

https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/NETBEANS/Apache+NetBeans+10

How (and what) to try out the release:

1. Download the artifact to be voted on and unzip it.
2. Verify the cryptographic signatures, the NOTICE and LICENSE file
3. Build it using the README provided by the artifact.
4. Look in nbbuild/netbeans for the NetBeans installation created by
the build process.
5. Run the NetBeans executable and (if you're running on JDK 8) you'll
be prompted to install nb-javac, after agreeing to its licensing
terms, and (if you're running on JDK 9+), you'll be able to use javac
directly from JDK 9 and, optionally, you'll be prompted to install
nb-javac, after agreeing to its licensing terms. As this is our first
multi purpose (Java SE, PHP, JS, Groovy) release, some features has to
be enabled in Tools > Plugins > Installed tab, or get's automatically
enabled on first use of a feature.

If the above succeeds, i.e., Apache NetBeans installs and starts up
vote +1 in this thread.

Please try out the package, using the instructions above, and vote!

This vote is open for 5 days.

Dear all,

The Apache NetBeans community has voted on and approved a proposal to
release Apache NetBeans 10.0 (incubating) [vc3].

We now kindly request that the Incubator PMC members review and vote on
this incubator release candidate.

Apache NetBeans 10.0 (incubating) constitutes all but the enterprise
cluster in the Apache NetBeans Git repo, which together provide the
NetBeans Platform (i.e., the underlying application framework), as well
as all the modules that provide the Java SE, PHP, JavaScript and Groovy
features of Apache NetBeans.

In short, Apache NetBeans 10.0 (incubating) is a full IDE for Java SE
and PHP, JavaScript development with some Groovy language support.

Build artifacts available here:
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/incubator/netbeans/incubating-netbeans/incubating-10.0-vc3

The specific artifact to be voted on:

https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/incubator/netbeans/incubating-netbeans/incubating-10.0-vc3/incubating-netbeans-10.0-vc3-source.zip

Included in the above are the DEPENDENCIES, DISCLAIMER, LICENSE, and
NOTICE files, as well as a README file with build instructions, which
are the same as these:

https://github.com/apache/incubator-netbeans/blob/release100/README.md

Apache NetBeans Git Repo tag: 10.0-vc3 :

Note: NetBeans license violation checks are managed via the
rat-exclusions.txt file:

https://github.com/apache/incubator-netbeans/blob/release100/nbbuild/rat-exclusions.txt

Rat report shows no unknown licenses, except for license files:

Included as a convenience binary, not relevant for the voting purposes
(unzip it, run it and you'll see Apache NetBeans):
