Hi
/dist/release/incubator/projectxxx May be needed in the short term when a
project just graduated and no available or stable release after being TLP
in the short term.
I suggest we set up a timeline for keeping them in /dist/release/incubator,
and require the PMC team to finish their TLP release, which could make
INFRA easier to clear the /dist/release/incubator of TLPs

For /dist/dev should be safe to clear.

Correct me if I’m wrong but any releases (in /dist/release) will be archived
and any releases in /dist/dev/ no longer need to be there as they are RCs and
the like.

Ha! The Infra team was just talking about that today, with the retirement
of Edgent and (cleanup of) Zipkin. Over the years, we've had mixed signals
about what to do with "Incubator releases" after a podling leaves the
Incubator. Some have said "keep them; they are IPMC releases", or "they
should follow the graduated podling to their TLP directories", or "just
remove them".

Could I suggest a paragraph or two, somewhere, to solidify the IPMC's
position?

Hi,

Here’s some interesting incubator stats:
- Of the 315 projects that have gone through the incubator 205 have graduated,
61 have retired and 49 are currently undergoing graduation.
- That means that overall 77% of projects graduate. The ones that do not do so
for a wide variety of reasons and may still exist elsewhere.
- The average time in incubation is 1.9 years
- The average time to graduate is 1.6 years
- The average time seems to be getting a little shorter. It's 1.6 years for
2015 and 1.2 years for 2016 (although this will increase as more projects from
those years graduate)
- The shortest time to graduate was 58 days (way back in 2003)
- 66 projects have graduated (and another 12 retiring) in under a year
- Of the podlings that joined in 2019 so far none have graduated or retired yet
- Of the podlings that joined in 2018 1 has graduated and 1 has retired
- Of the podlings that have joined in 2017 4 have graduated and 1 has retired
- Of the podlings that joined in 2016 15 have graduated and 6 have retired
- Of the podlings that joined in 2015 20 have graduated and 5 have retired.
- The oldest project yet to graduate is from 2013 (but that will soon be 2014)
- Over the life time of the incubator there has been 1044 podling mentors[1]
- Some people mentor many projects so that’s 339 different people[1]
- One person has mentored 29 projects
- 20 people have mentored 10 or more projects [1]
- One person has been the champion for more than 10 projects

I find it amazing that the incubator have been involved with more than 300
communities and involved so many mentors.

Thanks,

1. Probably more as mentors have changed over time.

2019-11-14 Thread Justin Mclean
HI,

> - Of the podlings that joined in 2017 4 have graduated and 1 has retired

Will do.

BTW you can generate that via the command line easily enough:
$ grep "status=" podlings.xml | grep 'startdate="2017' | wc
  15 951725
$ grep "status=\"retir" podlings.xml | grep 'startdate="2017' | wc
   1 7 133
$ grep "status=\"grad" podlings.xml | grep 'startdate="2017' | wc
   4 28 532
$ grep "status=\"curr" podlings.xml | grep 'startdate="2017' | wc
  10 601060

So of the 15 who joined 4 have graduated and 1 has retired.

Justin

The median would be less than the mean as you note. The median is 1.4 years to
gradate and 1.3 years to exit.

Yes that's where in information come from, but I needed to alter the data
format before I come up with these numbers. Not hat it couldn’t be calculated
from the XML it would just take a bit more programming effort.

We do have a chart showing podling extra/exit over time about somewhere.

Hi Justin,

This is great information. Thanks!

Please provide both median and mean values. I looked at Chinese podlings for my
talk at COSCon 2019. The median was less than the mean due to the pull from
projects taking a long time.

Your numbers do look similar.

These are important numbers. Are you computing this completely from
podlings.xml?

We could put this together with clutch analysis or the podling chart on
projects.a.o.

Incubator release area clean up

2019-11-14 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

If there is no objection, in a few days, I'm going to remove the following
directories for the incubator release area, as the project have either
graduated or retired:

If a product want to remove this themselves, before I get to it, please go
ahead.

Re: [VOTE] Heron 0.20.2-incubating Release Candidate 1

2019-11-14 Thread Dave Fisher
Hi -

I failed on Catalina as well. It was in bazel_configure.py due to Xcode now
identifies as:

FAILED: Could not determine the version of /usr/bin/clang from the following
output
/usr/bin/clang --version
Apple clang version 11.0.0 (clang-1100.0.33.12)
Target: x86_64-apple-darwin19.0.0
Thread model: posix
InstalledDir: /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/usr/bin

bazel_configure.py needs to be updated for Heron’s next release.

Regards,
Dave

Re: [VOTE] Heron 0.20.2-incubating Release Candidate 1

2019-11-14 Thread Josh Fischer
Thanks for sending Furkan. Bazel has an aggressive release schedule with
breaking changes between versions. Bazel recently jumped from ~.0.2x.x to
version 1.x that offers stability for up to 3 months at a time. The
build rules specified for version 0.26.0 are not compatible with 1.1.0. We
have some work to catch up with the most recent Bazel version. Thank you
for taking the time to vote. I will make sure to clarify the build
instructions on the next release.

Re: [VOTE] Heron 0.20.2-incubating Release Candidate 1

2019-11-14 Thread Ning Wang
Which version of bazel you are using? Heron is using 0.26.1 current.

Mac dev environment could be another possibility. XCode tool chain seems to
have some changes causing some rules to fail and maybe the new MacOS has
these changes by default. I have been using docker to build after
installing the latest XCode Definitely something we should look into.

Thanks for the feedback!

Omid -> Phoenix sub-project next steps

2019-11-14 Thread Josh Elser

I'm a bit confused about where we go from this point.

Given the doc[1] that Alan shared last time, we are good to move ahead
with the logistical changes.

Further, the next guide[2] simply says that VP Phoenix (me) should
coordinate with VP Incubator.

Should I go ahead and file the TLP Parent Request with Infra?

Re: [VOTE] Heron 0.20.2-incubating Release Candidate 1

2019-11-14 Thread Furkan KAMACI
Hi,

+1 from me.

I checked:
- Incubating in name
- DISCLAIMER exists
- LICENSE and NOTICE are fine
- No unexpected binary files
- Checked PGP signatures
- Checked Checksums

PS 1: Justin's objections should be resolved.

PS 2: I couldn't compile the source code at my MacOSX Catalina following
this tutorial:
https://apache.github.io/incubator-heron/docs/developers/compiling/mac/.

Could you explain it whether there are checkstyle errors or more? Error is
below:

Re: [VOTE] Heron 0.20.2-incubating Release Candidate 1

2019-11-14 Thread Josh Fischer
Hi all,

We have one binding vote so far. Does anyone have the time to vote on this
release?
