The release was generated on macosx where md5 and shasum commands have slightly
different output formats by default. Hopefully that's acceptable.

Need some help for releasing S4 0.6.0

2013-05-13 Thread Matthieu Morel
Hi all,

we currently have the following +1 votes:

1 IPMC / PPMC vote (phunt)
2 PPMC votes (kishoreg, mmorel)
1 non binding committer vote (dferro)

So we haven't reached the quorum yet.

Can we get some help (votes) to finalize this release? (The vote thread has the
following subject: "[VOTE] S4 0.6.0 Incubating Release Candidate 5")

Thanks!

Matthieu

[VOTE] S4 0.6.0 Incubating Release Candidate 5

2013-05-06 Thread Matthieu Morel
Hello,

this is the *fifth* release candidate for Apache S4, version 0.6.0

We fixed 2 blocking issues wrt RC1, related to s4 tools, 1 blocking issue in
RC2, related to metrics logging configuration, issues related to the package
contents and license headers in RC3, and removed included javadoc files in RC4.

This release fixes the following issues:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/ReleaseNote.jspa?projectId=12312322&version=12321702

*** Please download, test and vote by Thursday, May 9th 2013, 13:00:00 GMT ***

Note that we are voting upon the source (tag).

Source package in zip format:

http://people.apache.org/~mmorel/s4-0.6.0-incubating-release-candidate-5/

The (git) tag to be voted upon: 0.6.0-RC5:

https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf?p=incubator-s4.git;a=tree;h=8b43b317104cfc9ebc42f6e8ec9c9557867155aa;hb=2f474503e2da111601bb92ca7186c136ba28e5b0

S4 KEYS file containing PGP keys we use to sign the release:

http://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/s4/dist/KEYS

The README.md file contains instructions for installing the gradle wrapper
(which is not shipped with the source release).

We include a RAT check task. (Can be used by fetching rat from /lib dir in the
git repo and using the .rat-excludes file at the root of the git repo)

It can be run with :
gradlew rat > output

Please cast your vote, thanks!

[ ] +1 approve
[ ] +0 no opinion
[ ] -1 disapprove (and reason why)

NOTES:

- All releases by podlings must be approved by the Incubator PMC. The
conventional process is for the podling to follow the usual Apache process and
then call for a Incubator PMC VOTE on the general incubator list.
For RC5 however, following recommendations from our mentors, we are proceeding
to a parallel vote on both general@incubator and s4-dev

Re: [VOTE] S4 0.6.0 Release Candidate 4

2013-04-25 Thread Matthieu Morel
Hi,

we didn't get any extra vote, so the release is stalled.

Sebb pointed out that the source release includes the javadoc.
This is indeed something we'll update, but is this really a blocker now? Do we
have to cut a new release candidate and start again a new voting process?

Or would any other IPMC member consider accepting this release candidate (we
already have 2 IPMC votes)?

Please let us know, thanks!

Matthieu

DISCLAIMER file is at the root of the git repo and included in the release
artifact. What is there to fix?

The git repo _does_ contain these files at the top level of the tree, for the
S4 0.6.0 RC4 tag, and the release artifact as well.

You seem to be looking somewhere else (maybe the available web interface is not
that intuitive). From the web link we provide, just click on "tree". You will
get there:

Hi everyone,

this is a call for a vote to release Apache S4 0.6.0 incubating. Note that we
are missing 1 IPMC +1 vote.

A vote was held on developer mailing list and it passed for RC4 with 7+1's with
6 of them binding:

2 IPMC : phunt, acmurthy
4 PPMC : fpj, kishoreg, mmorel, leoneu
(and 1 non binding committer +1 vote : dferro)

Here is a link to the vote thread on the s4-dev list:
http://markmail.org/thread/c42yctp2qgm5mplj

This release fixes the following issues:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/secure/ReleaseNote.jspa?projectId=12312322&version=12321702

Re: [VOTE] S4 0.6.0 Incubating Release Candidate 3

2013-04-03 Thread Matthieu Morel
Hello all,

after getting valuable comments about our release candidate 3 for S4 0.6.0,
we'd like to cut a new release candidate.

However, we are still not sure about how to address the comments we received,
and we cannot work on a new release candidate without understanding the proper
actions to take.

We are also a bit short on active mentors in the S4 podling, that's why I'm
asking to the broader community.

We have 2 key questions, which I reproduce below:

1/ about the content of LICENSE and NOTICE, is the following correct?

- in the LICENSE file of the binary distribution, in addition to references to
non-ASL included dependencies (already there), we need to reference all
included dependencies that use ASL2, with the following statement: "The Apache
License, Version 2.0 applies to the following libraries: A, B, C"
- in the NOTICE file of the binary distribution, we add notices that dependency
libraries explicitly ask for. That is already done and no change is required.

2/ about the inclusion of the gradle wrapper jar + script in the source
distribution:

We currently use gradle for building the project. Gradle provides a basic
wrapper script so that the project can be built without installing gradle
beforehand. That is why we include the script + wrapper lib.
http://www.apache.org/legal/resolved.html#build-tools says that specific
[build] tools have been OK'ed for inclusion in Apache distribution when used
for that specific purpose [of building].

Should we exclude the gradle wrapper from our distribution?

Thanks for bringing us lights here, if possible!

The tag 0.6.0-RC3 points to commit 96938d5afe060f8213f66b3269e6c846cfc045e3

If you use the web interface of the apache git site, in order to reach that
commit from the provided link, you may either click on the commit id, on the
tag, or on the "commit" link.

By checking out from the git tag for the release and building the distribution
("gradlew srcDist"), we get the same content than the release candidate. In
this case and for that file, isn't what we distribute properly licensed and
matching the git tag?
But we can certainly add the licensing to the s4 file itself.

As you commented to Patrick, there is doubt, so indeed better to add the header.

I think you are reading from the master branch in the git repository. In our
development process (https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/S4-35) the master
branch holds the released code, while the dev branch holds the code accepted
for inclusion and that will be part of the next release. So we cut the release
candidate from dev branch. The year in the NOTICE file is 2013.

>
> gradlew and gradlew.bat don't have AL headers; nor does s4.

The s4 file does have headers in the release artifacts.

gradle/gradlew scripts to not have the ASL header because this is generated
code.

According to the RAT tool, generated code does not need to bear the license
header. This issue was identified and discussed during the voting process on
s4-dev mailing lis. For this release, it was considered valid to leave those
generated files not annotated by one of our mentors.

In the binary release, we do include 3rd party products and the NOTICE and
LICENSE files are updated accordingly, during the build process. You may check
the binary release artifact.

In the source release, we do not include those products and the NOTICE and
LICENSE files take that into account.

I followed the instructions for signing apache releases
http://www.apache.org/dev/release-signing.html and didn't see requirement for
human readable headings in the KEYS file. (and didn't understand the comments
were mandating that)

If this is a requirement for the release, I suppose I can update the KEYS file
in the subversion repository with the proper headers?

There is no reason. Those files are for setting up the development environment
and configuring the log output. Other xml files in the release do bear the ASL
header. Is that blocking the release?

I hope these explanations bring clarification.

Patches from contributors: missing ASF license inclusion?

2013-03-04 Thread Matthieu Morel
Hi,

In the S4 project we have some recent patches from non-committers, but we have
doubts on how to integrate them.

In the past, the Jira system had a clearly defined way for the contributor to
mark the patch as granted to the ASF.

Typically (wording from the hbase book): "The patch should be attached to the
associated Jira ticket "More Actions -> Attach Files". Make sure you click the
ASF license inclusion, otherwise the patch can't be considered for inclusion".

Unfortunately it seems that with the latest Jira updates, this option is not
available anymore to contributors.

So, now, what is the proper way to ensure a patch can be included in the
codebase of an Apache (incubator) project? Do we need contributors, even casual
ones, to file an ICLA?

Thanks for any clarification!

Please help us granting rights to a new S4 committer

2013-02-20 Thread Matthieu Morel
Hi,

Daniel Gomez Ferro (id = dferro) was recently elected as a new committer for
the S4 incubator project, but he does not have all permissions yet.

According to http://people.apache.org/committer-index.html , Daniel is a member
of the "incubator" group, but not yet of "s4": we'd need an IPMC member to
grant him these rights. Our mentors could not do that (rights, availability),
so we're turning to the broader community.

Can some IPMC member help us?

Thanks!

Hi,

it's hard to tell at this point. We have some very neat contributions and
integrations coming in that should be quite interesting, so in my opinion we
should have a clearer view for answering your question after the forthcoming
release - on which we are currently working. One sure thing is that we have not
yet reached critical mass for graduation.

Yes, and thanks Richard for helping here! Following your suggestion, I
had reopened the vote "for at least 72 hours with no specific close
time". I'll post the updated results tomorrow (monday).

I'm not sure the vote passed. According to Patrick Hunt's message,
we need 3 +1 IPMC votes, and we only have 2 +1 IPMC votes. The
confusing perhaps comes from this sentence in the podling release
management manual:

"The vote passes if there are at least 3 +1's from the PPMC/IPMC
members and more +1's than -1's. "

which can be interpreted as 3 +1 votes from either PPMC or IPMC.
Some e-mail threads on archive indicate that it is not this way,
though, and we need 3 +1 IPMC votes. Could anyone clarify, please?

2012-08-08 Thread Matthieu Morel

Hi,

I had misinterpreted the vote results and prematurely declared the vote
as passed, sorry about that...

kishoreg*, leoneu*, fpj

+1 wider community
Daniel Gomez, Karthik Kambatla

Thanks for outlining the missing IPMC vote Flavio, thanks for the
clarification Richard, and sorry all for my misinterpretation and for
the noise on this list.

It seems that typically mentors vote for releases, and that counts as
IPMC votes, unfortunately we now only have 2 mentors for S4 (both +1'ed).

At this point, I believe that we should ask for another IPMC to vote for
the release, by sending a specific vote request, even though the vote
expired, is this correct? Should we set a timeframe for the vote (I
don't see that in previous similar requests)?

Thanks,

Matthieu

[jira] [Commented] (PODLINGNAMESEARCH-10) Name search

Matthieu Morel commented on PODLINGNAMESEARCH-10:

For information, a search (today) on the US patent and trademark office
database returns "S4" registered trademarks in the following categories,
somehow related to software:

* computer software for management of purchasing of supplies and accounts
payable for surgical facilities.
* Computer software for database management of inventory for grocery stores
* Computer programs for processing and managing credit card transactions and
electronic point of sale transactions
* Communication services, namely, electronic transmission of data and documents
among users of computers; Providing multiple use access to global computer
information networks for the transfer and dissemination of a wide range of
information; Providing private and secure real time electronic communication
over a computer network.
* Computer security services in the nature of providing an internet trust
center, namely, computer security assurance and administration of digital keys
and digital certificates; Consulting services in the field of national
security; Electronic monitoring services for security purposes in the field of
homeland security and government.
* Computer consultation in the field of computer security; Computer security
service, namely, restricting access to and by computer networks to and of
undesired web sites, media and individuals and facilities; Computer services,
namely, computer system administration for others; Computer systems analysis;
Customization of computer hardware and software; Design and maintenance of
computer sites for third parties; Design for others in the field of computer
networks, software, and engineering for the government agencies; Design of
computer networks and software for others for the government agencies;
Integration of computer systems and networks; Monitoring the computer systems
of others for technical purposes and providing back-up computer programs and
facilities.
* Software and engineering consulting service
* computer software for management of purchasing of supplies and accounts
payable

It looks like the "S4" name is used either for consulting services or for
software aimed at well defined domains. Apache S4 provides a stream processing
platform.
