[Pre - IP Clearance] ec2stack and gstack donation to CloudStack

2015-04-13 Thread Sebastien Goasguen
Hi,

This is a heads up and request for help to prepare for a IP clearance request
for two code base to be donated to Apache CloudStack:

ec2stack: https://github.com/BroganD1993/ec2stack

and,

gstack: https://github.com/NOPping/gstack

Its two software there were developed on github by myself and two other folks
(mostly them :) ). One of them is on the cloudstack PMC and the other one has
an ICLA on file.
The code is already ASF licensed.

I am a member and will do the work for the IP clearance forms and requests but
I have never done it, so I want to make sure I do this properly.

I am following instructions in [1].
I submitted a software grant for each code base to secretary@ today.
I committed a draft of the forms [2] and [3]
I edited [4] but do not know how to generate the html.

Do I need to drop a tarball somewhere or is pointing to the github releases
enough ?

Having a second pair of eyes to check everything would be nice,

Once everything is in order I will call a vote.

thanks for your time,

Hi all,

It looks like I hadn't updated CloudStack's status to graduated soon
enough to have the incubator report generation process skip it on the
wiki.

Anyone mind if I simply remove CloudStack's section from the report

Uh, +1 also! Drat, missed the window.

I wanted to mention that the Apache CloudStack PPMC has done a great job
on ensuring their branding comes over cleanly from Citrix, and has
really put work into building an independent community, so kudos are
definitely deserved.

Re: [VOTE] Graduate CloudStack from Incubator

2013-03-14 Thread Daniel Gruno
Top-posting since this is a long letter and you just need to see whether
it's +1 or -1 ;)

So here: +1 (non-binding).

I've seen your work flow from an infra perspective, and it seems vibrant
and well oiled, and I'm pleased to see this vote. You're an easy team to
work with (that is my opinion at least), always give feedback, and
aren't afraid of using bleeding edge tools (even those written by me),
which speaks warmly of your ability to adjust to new surroundings.

With regards,
Daniel.

[jira] [Commented] (PODLINGNAMESEARCH-23) Establish whether Apache CloudStack is a suitable name

Shane Curcuru commented on PODLINGNAMESEARCH-23:

Approved.

Note that this really points out a hole in the podling name search policy. We
need to update it to say (something like): If the podling has a
well-established name over a period of several years, and the donor of the
podling's IP is explicitly granting the trademark rights to the name to the ASF
as part of the incubation/graduation, then the podling name search step is
simply informing trademarks@ of this fact.

If there's a well-established name (or especially a registered one, although
that's not required) being donated, that in of itself is a very strong
indicator that the name will continue to be suitable, especially when we
include it within the Apache Foo branding. Obviously, if there are any
previous or current complaints or issues with the pre-existing name, then
trademarks@ and the PPMC need to evaluate those to ensure they can be dealt
with as an Apache project.

Thanks to CloudStack PPMC for being diligent as always!

There were no -1 or +0 votes cast.

Instructions for validating and testing the artifacts can be found here:
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/CloudStack+4.0+test+procedure

If you have any trouble setting up a test environment using the
procedure on the CloudStack wiki, please ask on the
cloudstack-...@incubator.apache.org list. Someone will be sure to help,
and we'll be sure to improve the test procedure documentation as well.

The following artifacts are up for vote:

PGP release keys (signed using A0207CD4)
https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/release/incubator/cloudstack/KEYS

The vote will be open for 72 hours.

For sanity in tallying the vote, can PPMC and IPMC members please be
sure to indicate (binding) with their vote?

[RESULT][VOTE] Apache CloudStack 4.0.0-incubating

2012-11-02 Thread Chip Childers
After 72 hours, the vote for CloudStack 4.0.0-incubating *passes* with
5 IPMC +1 votes.

+1 (binding)
* Jim Jagielski
* Olivier Lamy
* Brett Porter
* Daniel Kulp
* Noah Slater

There were no -1 or +0 votes cast.

Jim, Oliver, Brett, Daniel and Noah voted on the
cloudstack-...@incubator.apache.org list's vote thread [1]. Noah also
voted on the general@incubator.apache.org thread [2].

I will now publish the release, and the project's community will
commence with it's release announcement activities (after the mirrors
catch up).

Thanks to everyone participating, and especially to our mentors for
the guidance and support for this first release of CloudStack from
within ASF. It's been both enlightening and fun!

If that's true, then should the release policy [1] be updated?

  [1] http://www.apache.org/dev/release.html#approving-a-release

  Perhaps.

I know I started out RMing with the idea that I just needed to collect
 more
+1 votes than -1 votes. But I think that's broken in practice. I think if
you have a valid, justified, -1 vote, and you release without addressing
it, then there is something SERIOUSLY wrong.

It entirely depends on why the -1 is cast.

Release votes are lazy majority decisions. They are not at all like
design decisions or adding a new committer. A person could -1 a release
simply because they are working on a new feature and want the group
to wait until it can be included. These are matters of opinion.

If someone casts a -1 because something is seriously wrong, then
we expect the rest of the PMC to wake up and say -1 as well.
If they don't, then it isn't seriously wrong even if one or a
few people think so. IOW, if it is a serious issue then we can
expect the majority to agree that it is a serious issue. There
is no need to change the rules to accomplish that.

An RM can choose to stop working on a release at any time.
We are all volunteers. However, the release decision is made
by the PMC; if a vote has completed on an artifact, then
that artifact can be copied to dist by anyone in the PMC.
If something really bad is found in a voted-on-but-not-yet-announced
release, then we expect the PMC to work together to ditch the old
artifacts, fix the problem(s), and start again with a new
version number. If they don't, the project has a much larger
problem than anything we might find in a release.

Note that there has never been a case where a real problem is
found and the rest of the group hasn't immediately shut down
the release. However, there have been cases where individuals
have poisoned an entire project simply by dragging their feet on
the release process for the sake of their own work or world-view.

A release vote is required to be a majority decision, rather than
a consensus decision, because Apache understands group dynamics.
That cork is meant to be popped. It is better for the group
that it be popped on a regular basis, where regular is
defined by the majority of the group. The more, the merrier.
Adding glue around the cork to make sure it doesn't pop, unless
we really really mean it, is not a good plan. We are far more
likely to be hurt by a project that can't release than a project
that occasionally releases too soon. Folks often lose sight of
that when focused on fixing a specific issue.

I know I started out RMing with the idea that I just needed to collect more
+1 votes than -1 votes.

I wouldn't define that file as source code, so IMO you cannot release

Sounds like something for a separate -deps package.

Re: Shipping binary file in CloudStack release

2012-10-29 Thread Chip Childers
Hi all,

I'm the RM for the release, so I wanted to provide some context to
Noah's question. Some of this has already been mentioned on the
project's vote thread, but I'll bring it up again here to see if there
are any thoughts to help us decide if this is a blocker or not. At
this point, I'm holding the vote thread open after 7 days of voting
(with a current +1 count of 5 PPMC votes, 4 mentors, and another 16
community votes - with no -1's or 0's), until I get a better feel for
the level of concern on this issue.

Here's the background:

Waf is a packaging utility, used to create RPMs and DEBs. Work is
currently ongoing to remove it (and it's use) from the project
entirely, so we're not doing something that isn't already targeted for
being undone as fast as possible. The challenge we have as a
community is that the removal of Waf will require a pretty heavy
amount of development time and another full round of functional /
regression testing. That will be several weeks of work (not days),
which is significantly longer than the community's desire to get a
first podling release out the door (our original goal was for the end
of the summer).

And here's my current thinking:

It's one line of bytecode within a file that is not core to the
project itself (it's only a build utility), that has a clearly marked
license for file itself (so distribution is OK from a licensing
standpoint), that is only used as a quick way to create packages for
Linux distros (not to do the actual project builds), and that will be
ignored by any distro packagers that want to create proper RPMs / DEBs
anyway.

IMO, this does not represent a serious enough issue to block a
release. As far as I understand the point of the incubation process,
this is the place where minor issues can be addressed over time. (I'm
new to ASF, so please do correct me if I'm wrong about that.)

I actually have more than enough votes right now to close the thread
out on the project's dev list, and open up a vote for the IPMC. That
being said, I'm new to ASF and want us to get things right. I
certainly don't want to use formalities like the voting rules process
to push past something that actually is a major problem, but I really
don't want to abort the vote due to what I personally view as a minor
issue. It will potentially cause harm to the community, which has
been developing very nicely over the last several months.

Anyway, that's what we're struggling with. Looking forward to your opinions...

This file is a an installer for an entire subsystem of python stuff,

*source*. So, it's no more good (or bad) than shipping a .tar.bz2 of

It would be more better, I suppose, to grab the corresponding source
tree and run their build script as part of your build script, but I'm
a bit puzzled as to whether this, as is, is actually a problem.

Benson,

I absolutely agree that it would be better to pull from the Waf
project source, and build prior to a user using it. That being said,
your point about being puzzled as to whether it's a blocker or not is
exactly our issue (hence raising it on this list).

Technically speaking, for releases, a -1 is not a veto :

http://www.apache.org/foundation/voting.html
 Votes on Package Releases

Votes on whether a package is ready to be released use majority approval
http://www.apache.org/foundation/glossary.html#MajorityApproval --
i.e. at least three PMC members must vote affirmatively for release, and
there must be more positive than negative votes. *Releases may not be
vetoed.* Generally the community will cancel the release vote if anyone
identifies serious problems, but in most cases the ultimate decision,
lies with the individual serving as release manager. The specifics of
the process may vary from project to project, but the 'minimum quorum of
three +1 votes' rule is universal.

However, having -1 would be a sign that something goes wrong. Either on
the community side, or on the voter side ;) Better try to see why a -1
(or many) have been casted before going for the release in such a case.

No disagreement. Again, that's why I'm holding the vote open until we
get enough clarity on the topic being discussed here.

IMO, fixing this in the policy would include a statement about the RM
having the right (but not the obligation) to abort the vote based on
any individual issue raised by a voter. But perhaps this is a topic
for another list...

Using this thread a specific example, I'll abort if the advice here is
that waf needs to be removed in it's current form.

This may be an area for project bylaws.

On CouchDB, as the release manager, I added this to our release process:

The release manager has the power to abort a vote at any point and for any
reason.

I advise we do the same for CloudStack.

Basically, as RM, as long as you're operating within the Apache framework

(even tacitly) agrees with, then you are empowered to do whatever you want
within the limits of that.

From your description, this is different from a compiled object file, it's
compressed source. No information is lost, it's just obfuscated and can be
restored. It's a little annoying as would be releasing source transformed via
rot-13, but it's still source IMO.

It would be more better, I suppose, to grab the corresponding source
tree and run their build script as part of your build script, but I'm
a bit puzzled as to whether this, as is, is actually a problem.

Doesn't seem like a blocker to me, so long as people have expanded the archive
and are happy with what's inside.

Thanks all.

I've just expanded the archive, and reviewed the contents. It indeed
appears to be the source code for version 1.5.18 of waf. I can't find
any issues with including this source code (excluding the obvious
weirdness about how it's included in our release package).

Any other concerns?

It's the waf source.

If yes, it's just weird to include it in that form but I agree that
the no binaries problem is not that important then, if one can

of the source:

https://git-wip-us.apache.org/repos/asf?p=incubator-cloudstack.git;a=blob_plain;f=waf;hb=HEAD

It seems to be a sort of hybrid source/binary file. Very strange.

Can we ship this?

 [1] http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/CloudStackProposal

 Abstract

CloudStack is an IaaS (Infrastracture as a Service) cloud orchestration
 platform.

 Proposal

CloudStack provides control plane software that can be used to create an IaaS
cloud. It includes an HTTP-based API for user and administrator functions and
a web UI for user and administrator access. Administrators can provision
physical infrastructure (e.g., servers, network elements, storage) into an
instance of CloudStack, while end users can use the CloudStack self-service
API and UI for the provisioning and management of virtual machines, virtual
 disks, and virtual networks.

Citrix Systems, Inc. submits this proposal to donate the CloudStack source
code, documentation, websites, and trademarks to the Apache Software
 Foundation (ASF).

 Background

Amazon and other cloud pioneers invented IaaS clouds. Typically these clouds
provide virtual machines to end users. CloudStack additionally provides
baremetal OS installation to end users via a self-service interface. The
management of physical resources to provide the larger goal of cloud service
delivery is known as orchestration. IaaS clouds are usually described as
elastic -- an elastic service is one that allows its user to rapidly scale
up or down their need for resources.

A number of open source projects and companies have been created to implement
IaaS clouds. Cloud.com started CloudStack in 2008 and released the source
under GNU General Public License version 3 (GPL v3) in 2010. Citrix
acquired Cloud.com, including CloudStack, in 2011. Citrix re-licensed the
CloudStack source under Apache License v2 in April, 2012.

 Rationale

IaaS clouds provide the ability to implement datacenter operations in a
programmable fashion. This functionality is tremendously powerful and
 benefits the community by providing:

 - More efficient use of datacenter personnel
 - More efficient use of datacenter hardware
 - Better responsiveness to user requests
 - Better uptime/availability through automation

While there are several open source IaaS efforts today, none are governed by
an independent foundation such as ASF. Vendor influence and/or proprietary
implementations may limit the community's ability to choose the hardware and
software for use in the datacenter. The community at large will benefit from
the ability to enhance the orchestration layer as needed for particular
hardware or software support, and to implement algorithms and features that
may reduce cost or increase user satisfaction for specific use cases. In this
respect the independent nature of the ASF is key to the long term health and
 success of the project.

 Initial Goals

The CloudStack project has two initial goals after the proposal is accepted
 and the incubation has begun.

The Cloudstack Project's first goal is to ensure that the CloudStack source
includes only third party code that is licensed under the Apache License or
open source licenses that are approved by the ASF for use in ASF projects.
The CloudStack Project has begun the process of removing third party code
that is not licensed under an ASF approved license. This is an ongoing
process that will continue into the incubation period. Third party code
contributed to CloudStack under the CloudStack contribution agreement was
assigned to Cloud.com in exchange for distributing CloudStack under GPLv3.
The CloudStack project has begun the process of amending the previous
CloudStack contribution agreements to obtain consent from existing
contributors to change the CloudStack project's license. In the event that an
existing contributor does not consent to this change, the project is prepared
to remove that contributor's code. Additionally, there are binary
dependencies on redistributed libraries that are not provided with an
ASF-approved license. Finally, the CloudStack has source files incorporated
from third parties that were not provided with an ASF-approved license. We
have begun the process of re-writing this software. This is an ongoing
process that will extend into the incubation period. These issues are
discussed in more detail later in the proposal.

Although CloudStack is open source, many design documents and discussions
 that should have been publicly

Although CloudStack is open source, many
