I can't tell from that page if the left menu will grow to the right 
forever or not if there are some long names.

That's my main beef with the previous one.

Like Jon has said, that left nav bar chewing 30+% of the page is a killer 
from a usability angle.

Smaller fonts + truncation looks like a solution for me, no?

yep - with the a title=full name/ Rob suggested.

I would cut off on 18 chars width.
