[gentoo-amd64] sound error

2005-03-27 Thread Mark Creamer
I may have caused this recently when I tried installing amarok, not sure. Now
when I log in to KDE, I get a message: (Title: Error - artsmessag) Sound
Server Fatal Error: cpu overload, aborting. Sound does not work now. Any idea
what to do? Thanks!

[gentoo-amd64] Portable Mirror ?

2005-03-21 Thread Mark Creamer
Is it possible to periodically create a set of DVDs with all the packages for
the AMD64 architecture so I can install software when I don't have Internet
access? If so, what would I need to do to accomplish this?
Thanks!

When I run the script, it says:
/root/.setup27562: error while loading shared libraries: libXi.so.6:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Is this something that might be fixable, or will crossover just not work
  with AMD64?

 Thanks,

Crossover office is 32-bit software, so you'll need the 32-bit dynamic
 libraries it depends on.

The libXi.so.6 problem, can be fixed by doing:

 emerge app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-xlibs.

This will emerge 32-bit X libraries.

If the script will continue displaying errors about shared libraries it
can't load, you should emerge some other emul-linux-x86-*libs too.
You can see the entire list of 32-bit libraries in portage and wheter
you have already installed them by doing: emerge -s emul-linux-x86-*

 Hope this helps

[gentoo-amd64] printing to JetDirect

2005-03-15 Thread Mark Creamer
I'm trying to set up my machine to print to an external JetDirect device. It's
the kind with three parallel ports. My printer is attached to the Port No. 1,
so in TCP/IP terms, it's 192.168.1.30:9100

The JetDirect is on the same subnet. I can ping it, and I can establish a
telnet session from the PC.

I emerged cups, and was also able to go to the http://localhost:631
configuration page. That was before a recent emerge -D world update. Now I
can't get to the web page anymore, and when I try to print, my printer does
not show up in the list of available printers. I think I just need to start
over. What packages do I need to make sure I have? I tried following the
Gentoo cups instructions, but it doesn't deal with working with networked
printers. Thanks!

I chose the emu10k1 device driver, since that's mentioned on the card's

also. So far, I'm not getting any sound though. Any tips you might have
  for that?

Probably you want to do rc-update add alsasound boot and
/etc/init.d/alsasound start. Also, ALSA sound is muted by default.
You need to use a mixer program to unmute it. ROX Volume Control
(rox-base/volume) the one I like best (it may be masked for AMD64, but
it works). There are also alsamixer, alsamixergui, aumix, kmix, etc.
