You don't need to mess with about:config. The setting is in the

don't know about alternatives, but gnome-mplayer with -gnome use flag
(and the same holds for gecko-mplayer) is just a simple gtk app,
just like firefox itself, nothig gnome specific about it and
theoretically it can look better in firefox than qt apps, because they
both use the same engine/theme ;)

with -gnome it also doesn't bring in any gnome dependencies... its just
that it is named gnome-... (well, because when you enable it, it can
becamu a full gnome app..., though I really don't know what gnome

And there is your device, FWIW. Now, enabling CONFIG_RT2800USB_UNKNOWN
is beyond my abilities. Even though it's definitely present in the Kconfig
file, I can't get it to show up in menuconfig. That option is new since
2.6.31-gentoo-r10, so I'm guessing the existing driver doesn't support that
particular device yet.

I'd happily be wrong if someone knows otherwise.

BTW, the driver code that's rejecting your device could be commented out
in drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2800usb.c (lines 2339-2359). (If you choose
to rebuild the driver that way -- don't blame me for any death/destruction
or loss of data it may cause. The RF chip is the high-power part of the
adapter, so driving that chip incorrectly could do it damage, maybe.)

Maybe someone can tell us what error 2 means, I don't know. In general,
when any package won't finish building the most import info is in the
build.log, in this particular instance, here:
/var/tmp/portage/gnome-extra/gnome-user-docs-2.26.2/temp/build.log

Look through that build.log for words like 'error' 'not found' 'denied'
and any others that imply failure,
