[gentoo-user] Restart "frozen" X
I'm running Nvidia driver: 310.32 with my GeForce GTS 450 kernle-3.1.6 but I've noticed it freezes my screen once a day or ever second day. Mouse is moving but no icon is responding, nor can I use the keyboard (all frozen). I can login to the system over ssh. I've tried to restart/zap "xdm" it doesn't help. What else can I do to restart "X"? -- Joseph

Run `make menuconfig` so that you get the blue and grey text menu: General setup ---> [ ] Enable loadable module support ---> -*- Enable the block layer ---> … then hit the forward-slash key ("/") and type "user_ns". If your kernel supports this option then it'll show where to find it, and any dependencies. Right now I'm connected to a system running 3.0.3, so I can't speak for your kernel version. But here this shows: Symbol: USER_NS [=y] Type : boolean Prompt: User namespace (EXPERIMENTAL) Defined at init/Kconfig:790 Depends on: NAMESPACES [=y] && EXPERIMENTAL [=y] Location: -> General setup -> Namespaces support (NAMESPACES [=y]) HTH, Stroller.

The wiki page says to use / to search for each option in make menuconfig. That shows the option and its dependencies, for example /USER_NS here gives Depends on: NAMESPACES [=y] && EXPERIMENTAL [=y] && UIDGID_CONVERTED [=n] So the option won't show up here because I haven't enabled UIDGID_CONVERTED. -- Neil Bothwick without C people would code in Basi, Pasal and Obol signature.asc Description: PGP signature
[gentoo-user] Kernel 3.8.0 CONFIG_USER_NS
I'm trying to follow the doc to setup LXC (http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/LXC) and am unable to find this option. I manually insert it ane make menuconfig again and it gets removed. I see the other options the doc references: [*] UTS namespace [*] IPC namespace [*] User namespace (EXPERIMENTAL) [*] PID Namespaces [*] Network namespace But not 'User namespace' - is there something that has/needs to be enabled/disabled for this to work? I grepped through the 3.8.0 and 3.5.7 source and see about the same number of references to this config option, and the only thing I found in googling was these namespace options are expanding, so I'm guessing it wasn't removed?

I'm pretty sure icedtea is what presents itself as "1.7.0_13 from Oracle Corporation" in your browser plugin, so java-nsplugin set to icedtea makes sense. It is not up-to-date with the official Oracle released version number.
[gentoo-user] Java - which version does my browser use?
Hi, when I direct my browser (opera or firefox, both at most recent versions) to http://javatester.org/version.html they both say I'm using Java Version: 1.7.0_13 from Oracle Corporation but eselect java-vm list shows oracle-jre-bin-1.7 and eix oracle-jre-bin shows version 1.7.0.15 and eselect java-nsplugin shows icedtea-7 How does this fit together? Many thanks for a hint, Helmut.

Actually the storage is showing as 14.6GB so that is correct but when I boot windows I only see about 600Mb free disk space instead of 4+GB Stick a gparted LiveCD in the machine (or boot from an image on your drive by pointing the virtual CDROM device to it) and extend the end of the MSWindows partition to fill in the size of the virtual disk you just enlarged. When you reboot into MSWindows (detach the LiveCD first) and then allow MSWindows to run and complete chkdsk - or your data could be lost. -- Regards, Mick I just realize it, thanks. That is exactly what I did, gparted worked without a problem. -- Joseph
