Possibly it's just the issue with two packages which cannot be
installed at the same time. Recently[1] util-linux added the same
functionality and command 'rfkill', so that is probably why those two
cannot be installed at the same time, try removing net-wireless/rfkill.

I've heard of that problem you have before but can't recall what causes
it.  This should give you some links to look into in the meantime.

https://www.startpage.com/do/search?q=%2Fetc%2Fprofile.env%3A+cannot+execute+binary+file=english

My main reason for replying, you may want to enable the Sys-Rq key
sequence, if it isn't already.  While rare, I sometimes get a hard lock
up and at least that gives file systems a chance to sync up and to have
a normal and safe umount of partitions.

Hope that helps.

[gentoo-user] Machine not booting properly: profile.env cannot execute binary file

2017-10-24 Thread Andrew Lowe

Hi all,
My machine went feral which resulted in me having to kill the power to
kill it. Upon reboot everything looked good, fsck did it's job, [ok]'s
scrolled up the screen etc and then I got the login prompt. I entered my
username & password and then the fun began.

I got:

-bash: .: /etc/profile.env: cannot execute binary file

If I tried any command, say ls, I got:

-bash: ls: no such file or dir

I've now rebooted the machine using a relatively recent sysrescueCD and
had a look at profile.env and it's binary but I thought it should have
been text In the top line or so it mentions "ld" for some reason. I
checked the same file on the boot disk and it's text. One or two I found
on line are also text.

Does anyone have any idea as to what's going on here? Should I just
grab the profile.env from the boot disk and drop it into the /etc dir?
Or should I go through the whole process of chroot off a gentoo disc and
then run env-update as it says in the header of the text versions I'v seen?

Thoughts greatly appreciated,

Andrew

Why suddenly "all packages" needs a different version of util-linux suddenly...?
How can I fix that?

The emerge should print/log which kernel options you do not have and
should have enabled if I am not mistaken. Docker uses some advanced
kernel features. I forgot to mention to check the kernel config in
my quick start, sorry.

You might need CONFIG_NF_NAT_IPV4 configured in your kernel to get the
NAT table for iptables (-t nat)

Grr... How did I manage to do that? I'm beginning to think I'm seeing what
I expect to see instead of what's there - speaking generally, that is, not
just here.

Thanks Tom,
I have got my containers up and running again. Before when I was using
lxd it was assigning an ip address to the container so I could connect
to outside world. After recent changes this stopped and i believe it was
down to systemd not running in the container (it was before). I now
realised that you could assign a static ip address using lxc exec
command.

cgmanager was an Ubuntu project and it was abandoned when Ubuntu chose
to migrate to systemd [1]. The README on [2] says "Please note that
the CGManager project has been deprecated in favor of using the
kernel's CGroup Namespace or lxcfs' simulated cgroupfs." I don't know
what the "in favor of" means or how to take advantage of those two
options, but maybe there's a solution in there.
