I finally figured this out.  In order to draw on images with display(1)
-> draw and have proper backgrounds, the /*-alpha on*/ option has to be
specified.

Well, after getting portage updated, everything else updated fine over
night unattendedly. In this case, this was definitely less work for me
than doing a reinstall.
