Re: [gentoo-user] xfs recovery + kernel panic

2006-07-07 Thread David Miller
I would try booting off a live cd that has the xfs utils on it. That way you can get your drive sorted out without worrying about your OS getting in the way.--DavidOn 7/7/06,

If I take the HDD and mount it (not as /) on another machine, there isno problem. The recovery finishes OK and afterward xfs_rapair doesn'tfind any errors. The next unclean shutdown everything repeats.
Is there a way to make the kernel wait for the recovery to finish beforetrying to start init or any other workaround?.Thank you in advance!--Best regards,Daniel--

Re: [gentoo-user] Waaaaaay [OT] Windoze back-up. Sorry to ask. :-(

2006-05-02 Thread David Miller
Partimage works pretty well although not exactly as you described. It requires a linux server to serve the images I believe. There may be a way to use a livecd of some sort to do it locally as you described.Otherwise the not free/opensource solution is Norton Ghost.

first CD and it boot and reinstall everything from there with littleinteraction from me.Is there such a creature? Please tell me it is free.I'm used to Linuxremember.I can't believe I let her spend almost $200.00 on that crappie OS.

documents and such to my rig, since mine seems to always work.:DAgain, sorry to ask a windoze question here but it's not like I askanywhere else.--gentoo-user@gentoo.org

Re: [gentoo-user] VPN?

2005-08-26 Thread David Miller
I've been having alot of luck with openvpn it's ssl based rather than
ipsec. I have found it to be easier to setup and less confusing and
it has clients for various platforms including windows...which is not
always the easiest platform to use IPSEC with unless you go with a
commercial client. You will need to setup a certificate authority and
understand the basics of openssl the rest is pretty simple. It even
works behind a NAT router or firewall. If the vpn connection is lost
it will re-establish it's connection automatically once it's routable
again. This works for both dynamic ip clients and even the server as
long as you're using some sort of deamon to update dyndns info.

For the most part, atleast in my area, I find comcast IP's to be very
stable. My IP hasn't changed in years. My ip least just gets
renewed.

OK I have read the vpn howto, and tunneling from the howto, and to be
truthfull i am totally over my head.

I have a LAN at the office including a freebsd file server, the server has an
ip of 192.168.xx.xx, and several other gentoo desktops have the same +1 each.
I have a linksys cable modem, and wireless router serving through the gateway
of 192.168.xx.1. dns is fixed with 2 dns servers from comcast. Problem is I
have a dynamis ip from comcast.

I want to be able to access a desktop machine, and most importantly the bsd
file server with my laptop, again with a dynamic assigned ip from remote
 locations.

What is the best combination, and some sort of howto for dummies would be
 great!!

 Thanks in advance.

Re: [gentoo-user] how to deploy a video lab?

2005-07-26 Thread David Miller
Last time I tried Cinelerra it was not what I would call production
ready and feature wise it can not replace Premier. However if you
want to test it out see the following link for instructions on how to
use portage and correctly deal with masked packages.
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Use_Portage_Correctly

In short you can do the following and then emerge normally.

echo media-video/cinelerra ~x86 /etc/portage/package.keywords
