Re: [gentoo-user] Kde version

You would be amazed at how frustrated gentoo users make devs. Plus
going from distribution to distribution not everything works 100% the
same exact way.

   Hi folks !
I upgrade my gentoo every day, and when I try to upgrade the kde, the
portage always display the last version of kde as 3.4.1. But newer
versions of kde has been launched (3.4.3). What´s the reason of this
late version still remains in the portage list ??

3.4.1 is the latest version marked as stable. See portage documentation
about using ~arch marked packages. 3.4.3 will be marked stable soon.
  Watch http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=112842 for progress.

I think the OP's point is that although the latest kde that is marked
stable' by gentoo is 3.4.1, the kde group in fact have released (and
 therefore consider stable) version 3.4.3.

And the reason for that is that it takes some time for the gentoo build
system for kde to be considered stable.

In other words after kde.org (or any other software writer) releases a
new version, it takes some time for the gentoo devs to make sure it is
working ok before they release it on the masses of gentoo users who rely
on the devs to keep their systems stable.

And a bloody good thing too!

  Petteri

[gentoo-user] highpoint raid

2005-11-16 Thread Douglas James Dunn
I have a athlon xp 3000 processor and a DFI
LanParty KT400A Socket A Motherboard, 1 gig of ddr ram. I think i am
having kernel config problems with it. I am using the highpoint raid.
when i installed linux i had to use the 2004.3 disk with the smp
kernel. I'm not really sure what the differences between the kernels
are. i know i couldnt get the 2005 live disk to work i couldnt get it
to work it always seems to blow after highpoint drivers come online.
but they seem to work ok. there isnt any obvious error messages.

im not trying to get the raid to raid i just want to be able to see and
use the drives. I know it works with the 2004.3 smp kernel the
booting stops in exactly the same place when i try to boot the 2005.0
disk as when i try to boot my own system. I know i can get lilo
to boot it

I couldnt get grub to load the kernel, it hangs early not sure but lilo
works fine. if cedega or wine could play eq2 it would bother me
more.

I'd still give it a shot. Most of the time the software is more stable than
 the
 developers would admit.

I asked because we encoded a 1h45m movie with h264 on an mac with
  surprising
results. The whole movie in full PAL quality shrunk to about 500MB The
encoding took 5 hours on a dual G5, though.

 Sounds interesting!

Re: [gentoo-user] low-level formatting a harddrive

2005-10-18 Thread Douglas James Dunn
um a low level format is always the entire drive. It basically returns
the drive to factory default. AKA all 0's. A high level format would
be what your talking about which would be the same as reformatting a
partition. as fdisk would do.

Unfortunately it doesn't give you the option of

I strongly suspect the problem lies on the first half
of the drive where XP-pro used to reside. Is there a
way to do a low-level format of part of a drive while
 leaving the rest intact?

I tried this options in the kernel:
