[gentoo-user] Changing the email address for bugzilla account
Hello. I have requested Gentoo's Bugzilla to change the email address for my account, because the current address does not exist anymore. The site told me that An email has been sent to both old and new email addresses to confirm the change of email address. When confirming the change by following the link sent to the new email address, bugzilla tells me that The token you submitted does not exist, has expired, or has been canceled. I believe that means it expects me to click the old email link before the new email link. How to proceed now? Should I contact some admin to fix my account for me? If so, how can he/she be contacted? And strangely, this *system* library is complaining that it can't find the correct version of libz. These libs have names (sonames) so you can tell different versions apart and use the right one. But the system libpng has no business trying to use a third party app under any circumstances. And in fact in regular use it doesn't, see mine: $ ldd /usr/lib64/libpng16.so.16 linux-vdso.so.1 (0x7fff7d79a000) libz.so.1 = /lib64/libz.so.1 (0x7ff9ad6ab000) libm.so.6 = /lib64/libm.so.6 (0x7ff9ad3b5000) libc.so.6 = /lib64/libc.so.6 (0x7ff9ad00a000) /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 (0x7ff9adb3c000) See? system libpng uses system libz. How does this happen? Easy. The authors of scilab are probably fiddling with LD_LIBRARY_PATH, which just happens to be one of the more dangerous things you can do in Unix. Go find the startup script for scilab and edit the mods to LD_LIBRARY_PATH to put the scilab directory at the end (not the beginning where it is now) In fact the startup script for scilab sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH. Running it in verbose modes gives this information: $ SCIVERBOSE=1 /alt/scilab-5.4.1/bin/scilab SCILABBIN : scilab-bin DISABLE_JAVA_DETECTION : 0 SCILAB_MODE : gui OS : Linux MODEL : x86_64 IS_SCILAB_BINARY : 1 SCI : /alt/scilab-5.4.1/share/scilab SCIBIN : PATH : /alt/scilab-5.4.1/bin:/home/romildo/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/4.8.1:/usr/games/bin:/opt/vmware/bin:/alt/scilab-5.4.1/share/scilab/modules/scicos/ CLASSPATH : /alt/scilab-5.4.1/share/scilab/modules/core/jar/org.scilab.modules.core.jar LD_LIBRARY_PATH : /alt/scilab-5.4.1/thirdparty/java//lib/amd64/:/alt/scilab-5.4.1/thirdparty/java//lib/amd64/server/:/alt/scilab-5.4.1/thirdparty/java//lib/amd64/native_threads/:/alt/scilab-5.4.1/lib/scilab:/alt/scilab-5.4.1/lib/thirdparty:/alt/scilab-5.4.1/share/scilab/bin:/alt/scilab-5.4.1/share/scilab/lib/scilab/:/alt/scilab-5.4.1/share/scilab/lib64/scilab/:. scilab-bin: /alt/scilab-5.4.1/lib/thirdparty/libz.so.1: version `ZLIB_1.2.3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib64/libpng16.so.16) I will try to modify the script to put the scilab directory at the end. [gentoo-user] Order in which init scripts providing a service are tried
Hello. There are some init scripts that provide network connection on my gentoo system: net.eth0, net.wlan0, net.wlan1, NetworkManager and connman. All of them provide the net service. (connman init script has been edited to provide net, as the original installed one does not provide it - see bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=438142) I want connman chosen to provide net. The init system first tries the net.* scripts. So I removed them (they are symlinks to net.lo, which should not be removed). Then the init system tries NetworkManager. I do not want to remove it because it is installed as a dependence to some other packages. I have tried adding a 'before NetworkManager' clause in the connman init script, but it did not help. How can I tell the init system to try connman before all other init scripts providing net? Any clues? Romildo

[gentoo-user] Choosing wired or wireless at boot time
Hello. I have two network interfaces on my notebook: one wired (eth0) and one wireless (wlan0). I am running ~amd64 on it. I want two gentoo boot entries in grub: one (the default softlevel) which starts wired networking (and not wireless), and another that starts the wireless network (and not the wired). For the later I have created a new softlevel named wireless, with all services from default, except net.eth0. The default has net.eth0, but not net.wlan0. Booting with default works as expected, but booting with wireless starts both interfaces. In /etc/rc.conf I have the lines: rc_depend_strict=NO rc_hotplug=!net* Any clues? Romildo

This works only in case that the OS correctly supports all features in the filesystem. As Linux does not support hard links correctly, callig mkisofs again will not always result in an identical image and the new image might not fit on the medium I have mounted the disc using the udf filesystem and then I have recreated the iso from the mounted disc using mkisofs with the same arguments. This time at least the new iso has the same size as the original one (while with dd and readcd the obtained iso is a little bigger). But the iso is still not identical to the original one. Romildo

The problem happens just in my notebook. Therefore it suggests the problem is not with the media. Did you ever write a DVD-R with this hardware? Yes I have written some DVD-R discs with this hardware. When I bought the notebook and installed gentoo in last January, burning with cdrecord (from cdrtools) used to work. Sometime later (about one month, but I am not sure) it stopped working. Probably after some upgrade. I do not remeber exactly. By then I could not look at the problem because of lack of time. Since then I have been using Nero Linux for recording DVD-R discs without problems. Some information I have sent in previous messages may not be accurate enough because I have forgotten to change the media to a new unused one. [gentoo-user] cdrecord fails to burn dvd
Hello. Burning dvds with Cdrecord-ProDVD-ProBD-Clone 2.01.01a67 on my Dell Vostro 1510 notebook is always failing. The device is identified as TEAC DVD+-RW DVW28SLC and can write at 8x speed. The process starts and reports writing at 14.5x, but the media is not burnt. cdrecord reaches but does not finish the fixation stage. It reports an average write speed of 14.3x. When I manage to stop the process (by rebooting the computer), I see the media has not been burnt and it is not ruined. It can be reused. With cdrkit, cdrecord finishes (after using different speeds, as 2x, 1x, 4x, 6x e 20x), but when reading the disc an input/output error is reported. With Nero Linux I can burn dvd discs without problems, though. When I bought this notebook in january and first installed gentoo, cdrecord used to work. Then at some point ago (probably after some update) it has stopped working with the behaviour I have described above. But by then I did not have the time to investigate, and keep using only Nero, which continues to work well. Today I decided to investigate a little more the problem, but could not reach to any conclusions. Any clues? Romildo

If you like to get help with cdrecord, I recommend you to first send information and log files about your problem. I need the following: The version number of cdrecord that caused the bug. The command line that was used for the failing command. The complete output (including error messages) from 'cdrecord -v ...' (use script to fetch the output) Probably the important part of the 'cdrecord -V' output if we agreed on it The OS name, release and hardware (processor) Special conditions of your environment (libc vers. SCSI transport ...) Sufficient information on the media used. This is at least the ATIP data, a note to CD-R/CD-RW and information on the state and the case history of this media. If cdrecord reports a higher speed than possible, I would guess that the Linux kernel does not set up DMA correctly. Jörg Most of the requested information can be found in the attached log file. I do not know how to get the ATIP data on the media used. But I can say that I have recently used more than 200 discs of this brand (Kodak) and it has shown very reliable. cdrecord has no problems with it on my desktop computer.
