[gentoo-user] usb not working after suspend to ram
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, on my x86 gentoo install, usb ports and any devices plugged into them stop working after hibernate-ram. There do not seem to be any modules missing or services not running after hibernate that were there before. dmesg does not show anything if devices are plugged in and out of the ports after hibernate. Any hints on how to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated. - -- Peter Wood Department of Languages and Languistics University of Saskatchewan -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v2.0.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org iEYEARECAAYFAkpKTRoACgkQpGFGVEw9tBkDSwCg0UzkH9qIZ621B36pE7QcxM9P a/IAn0Kw1d1IIn/bwH+DinWOfbZRgI3o =57W7 -END PGP SIGNATURE-
[gentoo-user] Acrobat reader problem
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I have just installed my first amd64 gentoo. I took the world file of one of my x86 installs and did an emerge -e world. [gentoo-user] Installing packages for old Python version
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I am trying to install Plone which depends on Python 2.4. Portage installs Python 2.4 in a slot in addition to Python 2.5 which my system uses as a default. Plone also depends on 2 other packages (Python-Imaging and Python-Elementtree). However, if I emerge these they end up in /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages. [gentoo-user] gcc not downward compatible?
Hi list, A few days ago I upgraded gcc from 4.1.2 to 4.3.1-r1 (upgrading Eclipse-sdk to the latest ~x86 version made installing gcc 4.3.1-r1 necessary, so I thought I would stick with it on my test box). Now I am re-emerging world and have noticed that a number of packages which compiled fine with the old gcc don't compile with the new version anymore and have to be unmasked in /etc/portage/package.keywords. QT4 is one of them, just to give an example. I don't really mind using the ~x86 version of these packages, but wonder why the old, stable packages won't compile with a newer gcc. Isn't gcc supposed to be downward compatible?

[gentoo-user] no beep in console
Hi list, I have been trying to get the console beep working on 2 laptops (one with a SIS and one with an Intel sound card). pcspkr is compiled as a kernel module on both laptops and shows as loaded in lspci, but I don't get any beeps either in the text console nor in X. Both laptops used to run Debian and issued beeps in console mode on double tab in bash, etc. I did modify any files to disable beeps, and yes I have unmuted all sound controls. Also tried unloading alsa, but this did not resolve the issue either. Does anyone know how I can get this working again? Thanks, Peter -- gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org mailing list
[gentoo-user] revdep-rebuild keeps emerging gcc
Hi, yesterday I tried emerging pdftk and was instructed by the emerge output to add 'gcj' to my USE flags. I did that, reemerged gcc and was able to emerge pdftk just fine. Now, whenever I do revdep-rebuild, gcc gets reemerged. Does anybody have a better idea, than to change my USE flags and reemerge gcc without the 'gcj' flag set? Thanks for any hints. [gentoo-user] How to boot into single user mode
Hi all, I have a kernel generated with genkernel and do need the initramfs because I am using lvm and luks. Now I am trying to create a second entry in grub.conf that lets me boot into single user mode in an emergency. Of course, adding 1 or single on the kernel line does not work together with an initrd. I followed the advise in the gentoo wiki on booting into single user mode and added: real_init 1 to the kernel line in grub.conf. This however lets my kernel panic on boot. Error: switch_root Bad init '1' Attempt to kill init. Kernel Panic I tried sustituting real_init 1 with real_init single and real_init S1, but get the same result. How about adding 'init=/bin/bb' to kernel line. I find that softlevel=single works for me Hi, Thanks for both replies. The thing that bugs me about the softlevel option is that the computer apparently enters into the default runlevel first before switching to single. If I do not want to have any of the services running, why would I have to start and stop them all (which might take quite a bit of time considering a computer that is set up for networking via dhcp, but booting up in an environment where there is no network connection. Is the real_init option on the kernel line no longer working? I guess I'll go with the busybox solution. Best, Peter -- gentoo-user@lists.gentoo.org mailing list

Let me know if the bb solution works, i'm interested :) best of luck Matt Harrison Ok, I tried the init=/bin/bb solution. It didn't work. Which is probably related to the fact that I am using an initramfs. If I use real_init=/bin/bb, things work howvever. Provided you remount your root filesystem with read/write enabled, this gives you the option to do any maintenance work and then reboot. I guess, if real_init + runlevel ever worked, it does not do any more. real_init takes a command as an argument, not the name of a runlevel. Best, Peter -- Peter Wood Ph. D.
