no it is not 'as well'. fancontrol is much more flexible than bios.

the box cooler is PWM controlled.

FORGET BIOS. 

There is a much better solution: fancontrol. It is part of lm_sensors and 
adapts the fan speed to the cpu temperature.


The app to config it is 'pwmconfig'


BIOS works just as well here.

Also, some fans have a temp control that is linear.  It doesn't switch
between speeds but as the temperature increases the speed increases
until it reaches a balance point.  I have a ThermalTake cooler and that
is how it works but there may be others.  The temp sensor is attached
under the CPU between the CPU and the socket.  Mine has worked well for
about five years now.

Just something to consider.  If you have a lappy, never mind.  You may
be stuck with the BIOS option.
