I have just emerged baselayout-1.11.12-r1 (replacing 1.11.12) and was
a little concerned that it did not update anything in /etc. I ran
etc-update after the emerge just in case, but it said there was
nothing to do. Normally an upgrade to baselayout generates a lot of
etc-update actions.

Only if the files have changed. The main (only?) difference with -r1 is
the fix to /sbin/rc, changing the way it mounts /dev, which was the cause
of the various problems.

I see that now, I hadn't rebooted for a week, so it didn't affect. I
also got errors about my /dev/mdX devices not being found, even though
the system successfully booted from them.
