I don't have that file, note that not all applications support UTF-8 yet, don't know where the characters are being displayed, try other applications, type 'locale' to see what exactly the current locale is. one thing, you'll be better off with a empty LC_ALL , but en.US.UTF-8 for you LANG. good luck Does anyoneknow whichvariablemightaffectdisplaying fonts - in general - or unicodecharacters - in particular? daniel-- Liviu

[gentoo-user] problems rendering unicode characters
Hello list,My system doesn't seem to be able to render certain fonts, mainlycorefonts(MicrosoftArial,VerdanaCo.),butalsounicodecharacters(Cyrillic, French diacritics, etc. ofSans,Veraandsomeother). They display a series of four numbers instead of a given character. Theonlyfontthatisdoing thejobacceptablywell - that is displays correctly all these characters - is Dejavu. I have re-emerged freetype with -bindist.AndIwouldreallyliketobeabletosetsomeVerdanaorArialnon-antialiasedfontasGTKdefault.Any ideas?-- Liviu

The problem is that GTK or freetype (don't what would be technically correct) refuses to display them correctly. They display a series of four numbers instead of a given character. -- Liviu
