I just encounter this problem.
It seems /etc/shadow is not updated while merging postgres, so you
just have to had this line to your shadow file:
postgres:*:9797:0:
It solves the problem for me.

When I try and start postgres, I get the following error
su: Authentication service cannot retrieve authentication info.
The same error message appears if I try 'su - postgres', but not when I
login as root or as myself. Any ideas?
