Thanks everybody.

Seems the problem was the eq-xmms plugin. Upgrading to 0.6-r2 (~x86 masked)
got it working again. don't understand why it worked before though.

I've no idea how long ago I emerged this version. Is this a problem with

  Thanks

You probably upgraded flac... See bugs.gentoo.org and search for your
specific problem and how to fix it.

 Cheers.

Thanks Jerry.

I just tried downgrading flac and rebuilding xmms, but I still get the seg
fault.

**really** need... smug smile

Might be time to think SLOTs?
Or maybe a re-emerge of Xmms.

Don't know what's up with that; it's the same version I'm using and
whenever I start to play a song my xfce4-panel segmentation faults
(this is due to the volume-control - when this is removed the panel no
longer crashes) with the following message:
---
** (xfce4-panel:17298): WARNING **: alsa_cb

Segmentation fault
---
This started when I upgraded the kernel from 2.6.11-r4 to r5 and
changing the profile from 2004.3 to 2005.0. Don't know if it's related
but it worked flawlessly before that change...

But then you don't get the joy of trying to fix a problem... ;-)

Oh, it works fine now, since I removed the volume control from the
xfce4-panel.

i don't use xmms, but i do use xfce4, and had this issue. the problem
is that you are most likely using alsa-lib-1.0.8. there is a bug, but
i forget the number. suggested in it were upgrading to the ~arch
masked 1.0.9, or downgrading to 1.0.7. i downgraded to 1.0.7 and have
no more problems with it.

you can add these lines to /etc/portage/package.mask
media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.7
media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.7

hope it helps
