[gentoo-user] device eth0 does not exist
Hello, and thancks for the help. I really dig Gentoo. I've installed my first Gentoo, but now I'm stuck. I started on an old PIII to try things out. Got the networking, ATI happening with xfce4 (had to unmasked a few things)and quickly dicided I would rather do this on the fastest machine I've got. I stuck the hardrive in my PIV and it booted, so I thought I'd just reconfigure and keep going. I compiled a new kernel with a module for the new onboard nic and had networking again. After a deep update gcc broke but was easy fixed by updating the link to my current gcc version 4.3.2. After discovering the gentoolkit (Wow!) I was revdep-rebuilding emerging -udN system and world 'cause my network interface was now coming up as eth1. There seemed to some residue from the previous network and graphix cards. So then I went removed the keywords file that unmasked packages for X and or ATI and emptied the portage tree. emerge -eN system emerge -eN world 80!... 24 hours later my system has been entirely rebuilt with the new gcc and no masked packages. Cool! Had unmerged X and xfce4 somewhere along the way, so reinstalled them with some other bits and pieces as per the Gentoo xfce4 config guide. Haven't rebooted yet. Reboot! Had grub now Lilo? I didn't do that. Oh well, still works. Ok everything seems to be fine, accept no network (and net-setup seems to have disapeared):( I think have inadvertantly migrated to Xorg 1.5 with all that hal stuff). Then I thought maybe i had migrated to openrc as well and started fiddling /etc/conf.d and /etc/rc.conf. (and a bit in /etc/edev/rules.d too:0. But emerge and equery assure me that I don't have baselayout-2 or openrc installed. ifconfig -a shows only lo and sit0. So Any insight would be greatly appreciated. The konsole profiles widget is an additional feature, not a replacement. Just create the profiles you want and you can easily choose with a single mouse click in konsole. Also plasma-desktop does not need a full blown kde or even kwin. KDE is happily running with every ICCCM /EWMH adhering windowmanager.

But if you have several tabs and you let something big running in one of them you can split it, switch to another tab and watch whatever goes on. You can also do side-by-side stuff that way. Could be done better, but still usefull and more than just tabs.

I tried a static driver as well. lspci say's http://pastebin.com/md3578a6 I deleted etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and rebooted. Now there's a message that loading module e1000 failed, and still device eth0 does not exist as well as device eth1 does not exits, but there are symlinks in /etc/init.d for both. [gentoo-user] Different desktop wallpapers in KDE4?
Hello list, I think I saw a statement on this list that it's possible to set a different wallpaper on each desktop in kde-4.3.1, but now I can't find it, and I can't see how to do it either. Is it really possible to do this? -- Rgds Peter

Cinder: your udev rules indicates that a e1000 card was previously recognised - this is surely the card installed in your newer board. Can you show the results of `modprobe -v e1000` please? Also, there's no need to use pastebin when posting to this list. Short sections of console output can be pasted into the body of the email; IMO the preferable way for posting longer configurations (e.g. your kernel configuration) is as plain text attachment. Just seen this, following my other reply. `tail -f /var/log/messages` in one window whilst running the `modprobe -v e1000` in another. `dmesg` should show the same stuff as /var/log/messages (in this instance, at least), but using `tail -f /var/log/messages` it's easy to hit enter a few times (to clear some space on the screen) and then see what's happening in real-time. Although there's probably a very good reason for it, it's sometimes frustrating that `dmesg` isn't time stamped. Stroller.

Hi, I've been using fcron for quite some time, but now it behaves strange. I have version 3.0.4-r2 installed. Doing fcrontab -e as non-root user I get Could not change egid to fcron[449]: Operation not permitted although I'm a member of group fcron. Furthermore /etc/fcron/fcron.allow has 'all' Even more strangely, do - as root - fcrontab -e USER it lets me create a file but on closing I get no fcrontab for jarausch - using an empty one 17:34:40 could not open file jarausch.orig.tmp: Permission denied 17:34:40 could not remove /tmp/fcr-z9FG5g: Operation not permitted So, I'm puzzled. I have mail server running netqmail and vpopmail set up following http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/qmail-howto.xml. I can't find a way to make the server taking care of storing all sent messages. Hi, I'm thinking about upgrading to gcc-4.4 and was wondering if anyone here is using it and if they are having any problems with it. I'm using a desktop system with KDE and OOo as the biggest packages. No servers or anything to worry about like apache. Also using 2.6.30-gentoo-r6 for my kernel. I did a quick search and found a page on freshmeat but it seemed to be related to MS-DOS or something. Dale :-) :-) gcc-porting overlay, install via layman. It had some ebuild/package versions that were patched to compile with gcc4.4. AFAIK it is not needed anymore.
