Hello Beatrice,
The quick suggestion is:
Try to learn a little bit about QGis separately (just search the
web for 'qgis tutorial') before trying to use QGis and Geoserver together.
The long answer is:
I don't know exactly what you mean with "don't have experience in
this field", so please bear with me if the following is too basic, but
it may also be useful for anyone else that comes across this using a web
search.
Geoserver runs on a server and you can configure it using a web
interface to publish your geospatial data in several possible ways. Your
data may be stored in files in the server or in a database (PostgreSQL
or Oracle, for example), and you have to tell geoserver where it is, how
it should look and how can the user access it.
QGis, on the other hand, runs on your computer. You can display
geographic files stored in your computer, databases available on your
network or display data published using Geoserver.
If you need many people to see your data, you should use Geoserver
and a web portal to show your data (geoserver will provide the contents
of the "map" part of your portal, may provide user authentication and
authorization, and will allow the user of your portal to query, insert
and update information)
If you need to alter your data, you may want to connect QGis
directly to the database, without going through geoserver. You may need
directions from your IT staff on how to connect to the database or
whether you need to go through geoserver or not.
If you need to change how something is displayed on QGis based on
the data, that is really easy to do and the tutorials will cover it.
If you need to change how something is displayed on a web
application that uses Geoserver you have to change something called a
SLD style, which is a lot more involved, but the changes will be
published to all the users of the website.
Hope that helps.
Best,
Daniel
