into problems migrating their data centre and then suffered a DDOS attack.

Make that: you definitely want to upgrade your geoserver if you want to use 
this new functionality…

You didn’t really describe your configuration, but perhaps you need a 
reprojecting granule factory. See 
http://docs.geoserver.org/latest/en/user/data/raster/imagemosaic/tutorial.html#multi-crs-mosaic

 

Also you might want to upgrade your geoserver to something supported.
