[gep-ed] Coronavirus And Global Supply Chain Disruption: A Wake-Up Call For Climate Policy?

2020-03-09 Thread Aseem Prakash
This short commentary might interest GEP folks:

Coronavirus And Global Supply Chain Disruption: A Wake-Up Call For Climate
Policy?

Coronavirus has slowed down economic activity and temporarily reduced China’s
carbon emissions. However, there is a deeper implication for climate policy:
decarbonization depends on global supply chains for inputs required for
electric vehicles, solar panels, and wind turbines.

What if these supply chains get disrupted? The consequences are serious when
inputs come predominantly from a handful of countries. China is the leading
supplier of “rare earth elements”, which gives it enormous power in the
renewable energy market. For some critical
minerals,
especially cobalt, the world relies on conflict-ridden and politically
unstable countries, such as Congo, which again poses a problem for supply chain
reliability. The bottom-line is that supply disruptions abroad can derail
decarbonization at home

[gep-ed] Environmental Rights in PA and FL

2020-03-09 Thread Gellers, Joshua
Colleagues-

I write to share news about a successful community-led effort in Pennsylvania
to push back against construction of an injection well designed as a fracking
water waste disposal site, highlighting the importance of using home rule
charters to protect the local environment. You can read the article
here.
In a related development, a Florida House Bill (HB
1343)
on environmental resource management includes a provision that would ban
rights of nature
laws
 at the municipal level.

Lots of action on environmental rights at the subnational level here in the US.

Best,

Josh
(with Chris Jeffords)
