Re: An OT thread about the forums

2020-04-13 Thread Owen Smith
I tried the forums some years back. I found dinky's rules and application of
them so strict that I felt it wasn't a place anyone could contribute anything.
It was just a place for reporting get_iplayer bugs or BBC changes, and anything
else got deleted.

I just use two Forums (Fora?). Both are well moderated and anyone who
behaves like a PITA gets ejected. This does require active moderation,
though.

I use many email lists. These can be moderated, but it is easy to killfile
and spam filter them.

I much prefer email lists as I can organise and keep the postings in
suitable 'mailboxes' and then do regex searches on them to find out things.
Although OT in its subject, this means I've been able to find material
reaching back to the late 1990s for my 'biog' pages! Not something I'd have
found easy with a web forum!

So, personally, I'd be happy for any web forums to vanish, and maybe just
be email lists. But I'd hate to lose the email lists as they can be very
useful as a way to share info.
