Occasionally I notice that the PVR process has stopped downloading.
Now that it's configured to auto-file programmes into folders it's
slightly harder to spot that a single download folder isn't being
updated, but often a clue is the disappearance of the CMD window.

Then I try to use 'Run PVR Scheduler' again but it fails with:
""ERROR: Quitting - PVR is already running (process ID: 13960)"

Searching for 'iplayer' in Event Viewer's application log doesn't find
anything recent.

The PID never shows up in Task Manager or Process Explorer so it's reboot time.

How can I diagnose this?
Failing that, is there any way to make the PVR process more resilient,
or failing that is there an easier method to detect that it's stopped
downloading?

The docs mention the possibility of using the Windows scheduler for
the PVR at https://github.com/get-
iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/documentation/09a72bf76c131c8932bbf0aef1eeb95ec85049b9#scheduling-
the-pvr
but the external link is invalid.

The pvr creates a small file called pvrlock in the get_iplayer folder. Try
deleting that.

Hello -

Is there a command line that would enable deletion / removal of one
off / single entry PVR searches? For instance, The Banksy Story -

continues to be part of the PVR Scheduler listing / programmes (as
unfulfilled) in my instance.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

The Museum of Curiosity

2023-03-07 Thread Don Grunbaum

Hi all

I'm trying to download yesterday's episode of The Museum of Curiosity, but keep
getting failures, although I can play it in BBC Sounds. I've had no problems
downloading previous episode.

I normally use the PVR, but I've also tried using the Web Interface with the
cache and Quick URL.

This is the error I get:

I think it's a problem at the BBC end, but has anyone else encountered a

Re: Why no Formula E?

2021-04-26 Thread Don Grunbaum
I'm not sure that you've followed the thread fully, George.

Your search will pick up "The Repair Shop" programmes in the cache, no problem.
The original question (from Steve Wilson) is about picking up programmes that
are not in the cache, but available on iPlayer, such as "box sets" and those
broadcast through the "red button" or the iPlayer itself, like the Formula E
races.

Admittedly in my example only two or three of the lines are essential - pid,
pidrecursive, and output (if you don't want all downloads going to the same
folder).

The others are put there by the "web interface" as they are my default options.

I hope that's clear.

Would this be more reliable for other series too? For example having
"search0 Click" for pvr can match other things too so I've other options

Do you have an example or link I can use to configure pvr to do this?

To pick up others such as these and "box sets" you should use the series pid

Just searched for "formula" and get_iplayer finds one match:

Matches:

Searching for "formula" on the iPlayer website finds eight matches. All
of them except for the above one were only broadcast via the BBC sport
webpage. Maybe that is why they don't show up?

Maybe you could do the same then run get_iplayer as if to download all
the storyville episodes, you could then just edit the history file and
remove the entries for the programs you actually want then run
get_iplayer again after you have uncommented the line.

Unfortunately I cannot remember which line to comment out, I have had
a look in the perl script and cannot work out which line it would be,
but maybe some other helpful person who understands how the script
works could point you in the right direction, in fact it would be
useful to have a switch on the command line to be able to do this,
there have been several occasions I would l have liked to do a dummy
run on a download without actually downloading anything.

Hope this helps.

There is a --mark-downloaded option to populate the history file without
actually downloading. Use that with the series pid and pid-recursive to
mark all episodes as downloaded, then use a text editor or similar to
remove all entries with first broadcast year of 2020.

Then rerun with the series pid and pid-recursive to download the 2020
episodes.

That should work - I hope! I haven't tested it.

Re: Syntax for grabbing all episodes of the new season of Celebrity Master Chef

2020-07-04 Thread Don Grunbaum
I find it easier to add the pvr files manually, as follows:

Add a text file to the pvr folder with the following content:

modes best
output V:\BBC iPlayer Recordings
subtitles 1
thumb 0
type tv
versionlist default
pidrecursive 1
pid b007mtf0

The last two lines are the ones that will pick up existing and future available
episodes when you run the pvr. You will probably want to change the output
path, and opt for different options for other parameters.

This can be done for any iplayer series, using the series pid obtained from the
"programme website" found by searching the BBC iplayer website. It's very
useful for downloading "box sets" that have been made available but don't
necessarily show up in the cache.

Hi,
Can someone please tell me how I do this? I promised some friends in the USA I

audio description.
Is there a syntax that will grab the published episodes, and that will run in

Thanks.

As the BBC say (paraphrasing), not all programmes are available on iPlayer.
This is generally for contractual reasons. It seems that this is one of those

Thanks to Alan and RS for the replies.

As I said in my original message, I can download the "alternative version" from
Radio 4 Extra without a problem.

It seems curious that the BBC have made that one available and have withdrawn
the original Radio 4 version - perhaps there was something in there that they
have removed on the repeat?

Programme Version

2017-10-31 Thread Don Grunbaum
Hi all

For some time I've been successfully downloading "The Unbelievable Truth" from
Radio 4

I'm getting this message with one of the current episodes, and I'm puzzled why
it's happening with this one and no others (1, 2 and 4 have downloaded without
a problem)

44424: The Unbelievable Truth: Series 19 - Episode 3, BBC Radio 4, b09d5nlb
INFO: 1 matching programmes

WARNING: No programmes are available for this PID with version(s): default
WARNING: PVR Run: '_The Unbelievable Truth_': 1 download failure(s)

I'm using the PVR on Windows 10, and the latest release 3.06.00.

I can download the Radio 4 Extra version, which has a different PID, without a
problem.

I've tried changing the version to "original" with no success. Any ideas?
Simply for my peace of mind, or in case it recurs in the future.

TIA

Radio 1 Vintage

2017-09-30 Thread Don Grunbaum (Gmail)
Hi all

The BBC are broadcasting programmes on a "pop-up" station called Radio 1
Vintage. They do not appear to be picked up in the radio cache.

I have found a way of recording them using the PVR and the pid recursive option
(there is a series pid for the programmes) but out of curiosity, is there a way
to "force" GiP to pick up the programmes?

Thanks for you help.

Re: Missing PIDs

2017-09-18 Thread Don Grunbaum (Gmail)
Hello Shareef

If you haven't run GiP for some time, it's likely that the programme you are
trying to record is not in the cache as the source now used is only good for
the last seven days. If you run GiP once a week (or more often) the cache will
build up to four weeks' worth of programmes, with older programmes (28 days or
a bit more) being removed from the cache. I'm fairly sure that's how it works
since the last major rebuild following the BBC's changes to the source that GiP
uses.

If it's not in the cache, your search won't find a match, but using the pid
allows GiP to get the programme source directly, even if it's not in the cache.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure that somebody will correct me.

Hi there,

not used get_iplayer for a long time so it's very possible I've done
something stupid. I've just installed the latest Windows executable
following the install instructions, however, I'm unable to see
programs that I know are available.

I want to download an Annie Mac radio show from R1 and traditionally I
would have searched using 'get_iplayer --type=radio Annie'. This
fails to show any entries.

I can download an episode directly using the PID if I find one from
the website, such as p05fdry0, but searching shows nothing.

% get_iplayer "Annie Mac Live"
> nothing

% get_iplayer --pid p05fdry0
> -==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==--==-
INFO: Annie Mac Live Mix - Waze & Odyssey Ibiza Mix (p05fdry0) Already
in history - use --force to override

I've tried refreshing the cache, resetting the cache (which hung), and
am all out of suggestions from the wiki.

Thanks, Shareef.

Depends how you use GiP

There's an output option you can store in your options file
You can add the output parameter to you GiP command
You can add an output path to a pvr file

It's all documented at

I don't think that is illegal. That is because it is the house
that
is licensed not the person. Anyone can watch a tv that is on
those

premises.

No they can't/couldn't. Did they not have to be members of your
family /

household (or guests)?

Are you sure? You may well be right but I have not seen that
documented.

Colin

While this is getting wildly OT, it IS the premises that are licensed.
You need separate licenses in "houses in multiple occupation" if
people have their own lockable entrance door (e.g. student lets).

Commercial premises (offices, shops and factories etc.) need a licence
but anybody on the premises can watch. I'm not sure about hotels, they
will probably be dealt with differently.

But don't go into PRS licences or we will be here all year.

My OS is WinVista SP2 Home Premium 32bit, I have GiP 2.94 installed

XP SP3 here, GiP 2.94

In one of your previous posts you said:

The command line works fine.

so that means you did manage to record some of the already broadcast
radio shows belonging to brandPID=p03lsql7 by issuing

get_iplayer --type=radio --pid=p03lsql7 --pid-recursive

in the CLI (???).

Yes, I did

Can you post the console output when running the pvr job, so that we
can see what's possibly wrong? In the CLI run:

get_iplayer --pvr-single="ONCE_BBC_Radio_2_50s" > PVR_log.txt 2&>1

I get "The syntax of the command is incorrect". :-(

However, running the pvr in full, it is now working. :-)
The only significant change seems to be the naming of the file
starting with ONCE. Does that make a difference? Does GiP treat these
jobs differently? Normally they are deleted after a successful
execution.

---SNIP---

I honestly hope you get this sorted!

Me too. I would rather have "brand" PIDs in the PVR than name matches
for a lot of what I download. If they all have to start with ONCE, I
can deal with that.

Best regards.

Hi again, Don :-)

Much like Howard, I do not use the Web PVR Manager
(GUI), except for testing things...
When you said you tried adding the "equivalent command"
to the "pvr", what did you actually do?
In the above context, does "pvr" = "Web PVR Manager"
or were you actually trying to set up a PVR job?

The "Quick URL" input field of the GUI does not accept,
I'm afraid, the "--pid-recursive" switch :-(

Anybody else had any success with
that option within the pvr?

If you want to create a PVR job for brandPID=p03lsql7
you can do so via the CLI:

get_iplayer --type=radio --pid=p03lsql7 --pid-recursive --modes=best
 --pvr-add="ONCE_BBC_Radio_2_50s"

(Notice the prefix "ONCE_" in the PVR search's name,
because this is a pid related PVR job.)

If you're using the GUI, then selecting the "PVR List" tab
you'll see that "ONCE_BBC_Radio_2_50s" has been added
to the list. Tick that PVR search and then hit tab button
"Run PVR" to manually initiate the downloads via the GUI;
or you can use the "Run PVR Scheduler Now" shortcut to
fetch at a later time (or use the CLI:

get_iplayer --pvr-single="ONCE_BBC_Radio_2_50s")

As suggested by Graham, once you have downloaded
everything you wanted, disable/delete the PVR job
through the GUI or CLI.

Hope I've helped,
Best regards from 27 Celsius Greece!
Vangelis.

Thanks again Vangelis

I have added a recursive pvr job with the above "brand" pid, but when
I run the pvr it doesn't find any programmes, either in pvr-single
mode, or "normal" mode. I've tried it before with other "brand" pids,
but it has never worked for me.

Hi Don - it depends on what you mean by "default";
have a quick read of:

https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/webpvr#settings

By "default" I mean those that are saved by the "Save as Default"
button.

This covers those, so thank you.

Changes to the WebPVR "defaults" made through the GUI
are stored as browser cookies, from "localhost" (or "127.0.0.1",
in older versions of the WeBPVR) hostname - if you have
browser addons or browser settings that clear cookies after
browser is exited, those "settings" will be lost. You then have
to exclude "localhost" from its cookies being wiped out,
if you want those settings to persist between browser sessions.

The WebPVR picks other GiP settings from GiP's options files,
system options:
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\get_iplayer\options
User options:
%USERPROFILE%\.get_iplayer\options

Please do read

https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/webpvr#relationship-to-cli

carefully, to understand how the "CLI" settings
(stored in options files) and in what hierarchy
are being used by the GUI along the ones
stored in browser cookies.

I am aware of that file, which applies to any way that GiP commands
are launched.

I'm trying to switch from Chrome to Firefox

The "Web PVR Manager" windows shortcut
always opens the system default browser - as
Alan has suggested, if you want to use Firefox
for the WebPVR, then you should make Firefox
the default browser.
If you are currently only experimenting, then, once
Web PVR Manager launches Google Chrome,
you can exit Chrome, launch Firefox and open
a "http://localhost:1935/; firefox tab to access
the local WebPVR server.

Yes, been doing that, no problem.

(What I have done personally is keep IE
as the system default, but modified
"pvr_manager.cmd" file to use Firefox in a new tab:
- .\pvr_manager.url
+ "%ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P default -new-tab
"http://localhost:1935/;

use at your own risk...)

There be serpents! :-)

... and one OT comment:
While you are trying to switch from Chrome to Firefox,
the Mozilla devs are doing all their best to ape/clone
Chrome!

But the Mozilla Devs haven't dropped support for Windows XP (yet!). My
only reason for switching is that Chrome keeps popping up a message
that support for XP has ceased, and I can't turn it off. I am
gradually migrating to a new Windows 10 PC (pause for Linux users to
snigger), but it's a long process in my particular case.

I will have to copy and paste between Chrome and Firefox to transfer
the settings, I guess.

Incidentally (as a nod to a different thread) my original post and
this are sent via Outlook Express on Windows XP, in plain text, and
they get through. A few people's posts arrive with the content as
attachments, but that doesn't matter (to me).

Regards,
Vangelis.

Thanks again, Vangelis, for your ever comprehensive reply. You could
have simply said RTFM!

FWIW I have two computers running Windows 10 with GiP working
successfully.

One is a new machine with a "vanilla" GiP installation, the other is a
netbook upgraded from Windows 7.

My guess is that there is something in your options file that doesn't
quite match your file/folder structure and that is upsetting the
syntax of generated commands.

As Vangelis advised, try running a simple CLI command and work from

You said in your original post that you had transferred your history
and pvr files.

Have you also transferred your options file? (from C:\Documents and
Settings\$User$\.get_iplayer). Depending on the contents of your pvr
files, there could be a mis-match between the options file and the pvr
files unless the file/folder structure is identical.

But you say that the CLI also failed, so I don't know if that is the
problem after all.

I did initially have a problem on a new Windows 10 PC, but I
uninstalled from the originally installed account, and re-installed
from the account I had created and all worked fine.

If it's not too problematical, perhaps you could try doing something
similar, test that the "vanilla" install works, then gradually change
the files to the transferred ones.

Does that make sense?

1) First Broadcast Date

AFAICS, there is no way to get the first broadcast date from the XML
metadata into the filename. This can be somewhat confusing for
series where
the episode titles do not include this information, yet there are a
great
many episodes which will get muddled up without it. For example,
Letter

From America:

Letter from America by Alistair Cooke
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00f6hbp

Episode Name: Domestic affairs
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b040brl0
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b040brl0.xml
first_broadcast_date1978-01-06T21:15:00Z/first_broadcast_date
1st Broadcast: 06-01-1978

As can be seen, the xml metadata contains the First Broadcast Date,
but I
can't find any way of getting this into the file name before the
Episode

Title. What I want is something like:
Letter from America - 1978-01-06 Domestic affairs

Is there is an existing way to do this? If not, can we have one?

firstbcastdate should give you the date that you require.

Re: PVR unwanted features

2014-11-05 Thread Don Grunbaum
The data sources are different, so things may be named slightly
differently now. And of course some things may simply no longer be
available. But not in this case. You need to learn how to use all
the search capabilities in get_iplayer. Use --fields=name,episode
or --long to look for things beyond just the programme name. To
wit:

get_iplayer --type tv --long grand prix

Matches:
564: Formula 1 - 2014: The US Grand Prix Highlights, BBC Sport,
Formula One,Motorsport,Sport, default, 0 days 3 hours ago - Suzi
Perry with highlights of the US Grand Prix at the Circuit of the
Americas in Texas.
565: Formula 1 - 2014: The US Grand Prix - Qualifying Highlights,
BBC Sport, Formula One,Motorsport,Sport, default, 0 days 3 hours
ago - Suzi Perry introduces highlights of qualifying for the US
Grand Prix.

Having rebuilt my cache files from scratch, with the same command I
get 0 matches

No radio results in sight. Check your options file, presets,
etc. --type=radio is creeping in somewhere

My options file contents:

fatfilename 1
whitespace 1
fileprefix name - episode - firstbcastdate
aactomp3 0
output v:\BBC iPlayer Recordings
modes best
subtitles 1

I will check other presets etc, but there wasn't a problem before the
changeover.

PVR unwanted features

2014-11-04 Thread Don Grunbaum
Repeating my thanks to DP et al for their very swift resolution to the
bombshell that hit last week, I have found a couple of unwanted
features with the PVR.

First, DP's fix for the past weekend's two Formula 1 programmes
doesn't seem to have worked for me (Windows XP and 7). The Radio 5
live programmes show in the cache, but not the TV.

Also the PVR matching on type seems to have been lost, e.g. I have a
PVR entry that looks for the string sounds of the 70s in a programme
title, with a type setting of tv. It is now matching Johnny Walker's
sounds of the 70s that has a type of radio.

If this can be addressed as and when time allows, my gratitude (and
admiration) will know no bounds.

Many thanks

Hello;

this has to be unique to you.
I have around 300 searches in PVR and they are all working as
normal.

I do find the below in tv.cache
.get_iplayer/tv.cache:3799|tv|Sounds of the 70s
2|b01kcq0k|2014-11-09T20:30:00Z|New Wave - Hit Me Wit

there are also entries in the radio.cache.

But type does appear to be working.

Thanks for the response; perhaps I didn't explain my problem clearly.

Does your tv.cache contain pid b04ndy7v (US GP Highlights)? Mine
doesn't, but up until this weekend all F1 programmes have recorded
successfully.

PVR entry reads:

fields name
modes best
subtitles 0
thumb 0
type tv
versionlist default
search0 Formula 1

Also, up until this weekend, radio programme Johnny Walker's Sounds of
the 70s has never been recorded (but matching TV programmes have
been).

PVR entry is:

fields name
modes best
subtitles 0
thumb 0
type tv
versionlist default
search0 Sounds of the 70s

Any ideas?

Having installed 2.90 the PVR works, but for some reason this

Hi all,
I'm using the browser interface, and the problem is that the run
window doesn't actually start downloadung immediately, in fact it
sometimes seems it just waits until the middle of the night.
But I'm now in a situation where I'm using a tehered mobile phone
for my access and have limited connect time.

Is there a way to kick-start the downloads?

I think you will find that the download is actually running, but the
run window is not refreshed until the download(s) is/are complete.
This started happening about 6 months or so ago, reason I know not
why.

PVR setting

2014-06-19 Thread Don Grunbaum

Help, please.

I am trying to set up a pvr recording for a series where any episode
information contains a given value.

I have set up an entry with the values:

fields name,episode
search0 value1
search1 value2

where value1 is the programme name and value2 is what I am looking for
in the episode.

Unfortunately this works on an OR basis - i.e. it records any
programme that meets either of the search values in name or episode.

I can understand why, but how can I make it search on an AND basis?

Thanks in anticipation.

Re: PVR setting

2014-06-19 Thread Don Grunbaum

Fields are not searched individually. fields name, episode means
each of your search terms is applied against the two fields
concatenated with a space - name episode. Use a regular
expression to constrain the match and get effectively an AND result,
something like:

fields name,episode
search0 value1.*value2

Many thanks. It's amazing how obvious things are when somebody else
points them out.

My experience suggests that ^Genius$ does not work, but Genius

No metacharacters effectively means perform a substring match, which
would always work so long as Genius is somewhere in the programme
name. ^Genius: works if the programme name begins with Genius:,
which it does in this case. That takes advantage of the fact that a
colon is used as a separator in the metadata and thus no need to
enter series number. Full name with series number is always best
for exact match. And of course you must be searching the programme
name, which is the default behaviour. ^Genius: works fine here.
If it doesn't work for you, something else is wrong.

Thanks for your, and others', responses.

It's not ^Genius: that doesn't work for me. As I said it's
^Genius$ that doesn't work, probably because of the colon. I haven't
tried ^Genius:.

The web pvr generates strings starting ^ and ending $ for a
series, but I usually want *all* series of the given programme, so I
usually edit the search string to remove the series part. If the
colon is omitted, the match on the name field fails.

That said, the downloaded programme *doesn't* have the colon in the
name field part of the generated filename, although it is in name.
I guess that is by design?

Because you might be getting radio and tv from a different servers,

Drive D is an internal 1TB SATA drive. I use it for Radio recordings.
Drive V is an external 3TB USB3 drive. It is used for Video (TV)

Both have separate folders for each programme series that is

No problems with reading or writing to either.

I can successfully download radio programmes that are in MP3 form,

There are a couple of options. I could make the the next rev of the

users don't get themselves in trouble with whitespace. I hate to
install useless settings by default, though. I could also change
get_iplayer to always apply fatfilename if whitespace is set, for
Windows only. I think I prefer the latter. I wouldn't want
fatfilename as the default with whitespace on other platforms since
it isn't necessary.

At the moment almost half the downloads would fail under Windows if
whitespace is used on its own, so applying fatfilename with
whitespace on

Windows only would seem to be the ideal option.

available for a year on the BBC iPlayer website.

However, that programme does not show up in any search results and
using the URL directly fails to find the PID.

Some anomaly? Searching for the programme on the iPlayer website won't
find it which begs the question how Geoff found it in the first place?
The Radio 4 schedule doesn't go back that far, only the past seven
days.

Re: Automatic Downloading of Regular Episodes

2012-09-26 Thread Don Grunbaum

I'm sure Windows systems can be bludgeoned to have similar
functionality...
but may not keep on doing the job unattended for several years at a
time
(the low-power PC that does my getiplayer stuff is a headless EeePC
that I

don't touch more than a couple of times a year).

Windows doesn't need bludgeoning.

Simply set up a Scheduled Task through Control Panel to run every
night. Mine runs get_iplayer--pvr.bat at 00.01 as my ISP doesn't count
usage between midnight and 8 a.m.

I use the Web PVR manager with no problems to control what programmes
are downloaded.

Be careful of programmes with punctuation marks in the title (e.g.
Who Do You Think You Are?) as they might need a bit of tampering
with what the web pvr set up. The only occasional missed programme
gets picked up the following night if it hasn't been listed on iPlayer
when the job runs.

I run using a Samsung Notebook using Windows 7 Starter, but transfer
the files to an external 1TB HD that is normally attached to a
different machine.

I have to admit that I use Radio Downloader for most radio
programmes as I had that before I found get_iplayer and some of its
features are better than those offered by the latter (IMHO).

When watched programs i delete it so it doesn't take up disk space,
when running PVR it re-downloads the programs I have watched.
Is this normal? I thought it was clever enough to know what I have
watched.

Probably. How can we possibly know until it's deployed and we can

According to the article, it only affects Android devices and that
because Flash is no longer being supported on Android. So there is
hope, unless anybody thinks that the Beeb will do the same for PCs and
Macs.
