Re: Why no Formula E?
I'm not sure that you've followed the thread fully, George. Your search will pick up "The Repair Shop" programmes in the cache, no problem. The original question (from Steve Wilson) is about picking up programmes that are not in the cache, but available on iPlayer, such as "box sets" and those broadcast through the "red button" or the iPlayer itself, like the Formula E races. Admittedly in my example only two or three of the lines are essential - pid, pidrecursive, and output (if you don't want all downloads going to the same folder). The others are put there by the "web interface" as they are my default options. I hope that's clear. Re: Syntax for grabbing all episodes of the new season of Celebrity Master Chef
I find it easier to add the pvr files manually, as follows: Add a text file to the pvr folder with the following content: modes best output V:\BBC iPlayer Recordings subtitles 1 thumb 0 type tv versionlist default pidrecursive 1 pid b007mtf0 The last two lines are the ones that will pick up existing and future available episodes when you run the pvr. You will probably want to change the output path, and opt for different options for other parameters. This can be done for any iplayer series, using the series pid obtained from the "programme website" found by searching the BBC iplayer website. It's very useful for downloading "box sets" that have been made available but don't necessarily show up in the cache. Re: Missing PIDs
Hello Shareef If you haven't run GiP for some time, it's likely that the programme you are trying to record is not in the cache as the source now used is only good for the last seven days. If you run GiP once a week (or more often) the cache will build up to four weeks' worth of programmes, with older programmes (28 days or a bit more) being removed from the cache. I'm fairly sure that's how it works since the last major rebuild following the BBC's changes to the source that GiP uses. If it's not in the cache, your search won't find a match, but using the pid allows GiP to get the programme source directly, even if it's not in the cache. If I'm wrong, I'm sure that somebody will correct me. Re: Disabling television mode
I don't think that is illegal. That is because it is the house that is licensed not the person. Anyone can watch a tv that is on those premises. No they can't/couldn't. Did they not have to be members of your family / household (or guests)? Are you sure? You may well be right but I have not seen that documented. Colin While this is getting wildly OT, it IS the premises that are licensed. You need separate licenses in "houses in multiple occupation" if people have their own lockable entrance door (e.g. student lets). Commercial premises (offices, shops and factories etc.) need a licence but anybody on the premises can watch. I'm not sure about hotels, they will probably be dealt with differently. Hi Don - it depends on what you mean by "default"; have a quick read of: https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/webpvr#settings By "default" I mean those that are saved by the "Save as Default" button. This covers those, so thank you. Changes to the WebPVR "defaults" made through the GUI are stored as browser cookies, from "localhost" (or "127.0.0.1", in older versions of the WeBPVR) hostname - if you have browser addons or browser settings that clear cookies after browser is exited, those "settings" will be lost. You then have to exclude "localhost" from its cookies being wiped out, if you want those settings to persist between browser sessions. The WebPVR picks other GiP settings from GiP's options files, system options: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\get_iplayer\options User options: %USERPROFILE%\.get_iplayer\options Please do read https://github.com/get-iplayer/get_iplayer/wiki/webpvr#relationship-to-cli carefully, to understand how the "CLI" settings (stored in options files) and in what hierarchy are being used by the GUI along the ones stored in browser cookies. I am aware of that file, which applies to any way that GiP commands are launched. I'm trying to switch from Chrome to Firefox The "Web PVR Manager" windows shortcut always opens the system default browser - as Alan has suggested, if you want to use Firefox for the WebPVR, then you should make Firefox the default browser. If you are currently only experimenting, then, once Web PVR Manager launches Google Chrome, you can exit Chrome, launch Firefox and open a "http://localhost:1935/; firefox tab to access the local WebPVR server. Yes, been doing that, no problem. (What I have done personally is keep IE as the system default, but modified "pvr_manager.cmd" file to use Firefox in a new tab: - .\pvr_manager.url + "%ProgramFiles%\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -P default -new-tab "http://localhost:1935/; use at your own risk...) There be serpents! :-) ... and one OT comment: While you are trying to switch from Chrome to Firefox, the Mozilla devs are doing all their best to ape/clone Chrome! But the Mozilla Devs haven't dropped support for Windows XP (yet!). My only reason for switching is that Chrome keeps popping up a message that support for XP has ceased, and I can't turn it off. I am gradually migrating to a new Windows 10 PC (pause for Linux users to snigger), but it's a long process in my particular case. I will have to copy and paste between Chrome and Firefox to transfer the settings, I guess. Incidentally (as a nod to a different thread) my original post and this are sent via Outlook Express on Windows XP, in plain text, and they get through. This can be somewhat confusing for series where the episode titles do not include this information, yet there are a great many episodes which will get muddled up without it. For example, Letter From America: Letter from America by Alistair Cooke http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00f6hbp Episode Name: Domestic affairs http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b040brl0 http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b040brl0.xml first_broadcast_date1978-01-06T21:15:00Z/first_broadcast_date 1st Broadcast: 06-01-1978 As can be seen, the xml metadata contains the First Broadcast Date, but I can't find any way of getting this into the file name before the Episode Title. Re: PVR unwanted features
The data sources are different, so things may be named slightly differently now. And of course some things may simply no longer be available. But not in this case. You need to learn how to use all the search capabilities in get_iplayer. Use --fields=name,episode or --long to look for things beyond just the programme name. To wit: get_iplayer --type tv --long grand prix Matches: 564: Formula 1 - 2014: The US Grand Prix Highlights, BBC Sport, Formula One,Motorsport,Sport, default, 0 days 3 hours ago - Suzi Perry with highlights of the US Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Texas. 565: Formula 1 - 2014: The US Grand Prix - Qualifying Highlights, BBC Sport, Formula One,Motorsport,Sport, default, 0 days 3 hours ago - Suzi Perry introduces highlights of qualifying for the US Grand Prix. Having rebuilt my cache files from scratch, with the same command I get 0 matches No radio results in sight. Check your options file, presets, etc. --type=radio is creeping in somewhere My options file contents: fatfilename 1 whitespace 1 fileprefix name - episode - firstbcastdate aactomp3 0 output v:\BBC iPlayer Recordings modes best subtitles 1 I will check other presets etc, but there wasn't a problem before the changeover. PVR unwanted features
Repeating my thanks to DP et al for their very swift resolution to the bombshell that hit last week, I have found a couple of unwanted features with the PVR. First, DP's fix for the past weekend's two Formula 1 programmes doesn't seem to have worked for me (Windows XP and 7). The Radio 5 live programmes show in the cache, but not the TV. Also the PVR matching on type seems to have been lost, e.g. I have a PVR entry that looks for the string sounds of the 70s in a programme title, with a type setting of tv. It is now matching Johnny Walker's sounds of the 70s that has a type of radio. If this can be addressed as and when time allows, my gratitude (and admiration) will know no bounds. Re: PVR setting
Fields are not searched individually. fields name, episode means each of your search terms is applied against the two fields concatenated with a space - name episode. Use a regular expression to constrain the match and get effectively an AND result, something like: fields name, episode search0 value1.*value2 Many thanks. I think the colon is what upsets the match. Does anyone else find the same? No metacharacters effectively means perform a substring match, which would always work so long as Genius is somewhere in the programme name. ^Genius: works if the programme name begins with Genius:, which it does in this case. That takes advantage of the fact that a colon is used as a separator in the metadata and thus no need to enter series number. Full name with series number is always best for exact match. And of course you must be searching the programme name, which is the default behaviour. ^Genius: works fine here. If it doesn't work for you, something else is wrong. Thanks for your, and others', responses. It's not ^Genius: that doesn't work for me. As I said it's ^Genius$ that doesn't work, probably because of the colon. I haven't tried ^Genius:. The web pvr generates strings starting ^ and ending $ for a series, but I usually want *all* series of the given programme, so I usually edit the search string to remove the series part. If the colon is omitted, the match on the name field fails. That said, the downloaded programme *doesn't* have the colon in the name field part of the generated filename, although it is in name. Re: Run PVM / Refresh cache - not working
Windows PVM Manager starts up OK and I get the full screen of options. But when I try to run the PVM List or Refresh the Cache all I get is the heading line: * get_iplayer * Search * Recordings * PVR List * Run PVR * Update Software * Help The cache will auto-refresh every 1 hour(s) if you leave this page open Then nothing happens. Has iPlayer finally beaten us? CJB. No problems here - all working as normal. Try a different browser - I occasionally get problems with Chrome. Thanks guys. Never had this problem with Chrome before. OK - so if things are working elsewhere how do I redirect get_iplayer to use a different browser please?CJB. Hi Chris (et al) There is a Chrome add-in that will open any given web-page in IE. It seems the BBC aren't infallable! Rob The BBC certainly aren't infallible. The recent 2 part version of The 39 Steps has the first episode labelled The Thirty Nine Steps and the second labelled The Thirty-Nine Steps. Took me a little while to spot why record series hadn't picked up the second episode. This seems to happen a lot with radio - i.e. the first episode is labelled differently to the remaining episodes. I could make the the next rev of the windows installer set fatfilename on by default so that Windows users don't get themselves in trouble with whitespace. I hate to install useless settings by default, though. I could also change get_iplayer to always apply fatfilename if whitespace is set, for Windows only. I think I prefer the latter. I wouldn't want fatfilename as the default with whitespace on other platforms since it isn't necessary. At the moment almost half the downloads would fail under Windows if whitespace is used on its own, so applying fatfilename with whitespace on Windows only would seem to be the ideal option. Regards John Many thanks to all those who have responded on this thread. I didn't realise quite what a can of worms would be revealed! I don't have the knowledge to create a first broadcast date parameter option, nor do I currently have the time to learn. I presume I would need to learn perl, and working six days most weeks would preclude that. Again many thanks to those who keep this valuable asset working and improving. File Naming
Hi I'm running GiP on a netbook with Windows 7 Starter quite successfully, but I want to change the format of the filename so that it more closely resembles that used by the late Radio Downloader, which I had used for some years. I am very grateful to those who offer advice, and maintain and improve GiP. I have found that using the whitespace option totally screws the filename, losing anything after the programme name, including the file type suffix. Does anybody else get the same? Is it a bug? I would also like to use the first broadcast date, not including the time part of firstbcast. Can that be done? I tend to do my downloading at branches of Pret or MacD's or at the QEH foyer on the South Bank. I can get downloads of 1Mb/s when there's not too many users around. So its not as though the failures are due to sporadic or over-loaded connections. CJB. What sort of trouble are you having? I've tried Geoff's search and failed, although the programme shows as available for a year on the BBC iPlayer website. However, that programme does not show up in any search results and using the URL directly fails to find the PID. Some anomaly? Re: Automatic Downloading of Regular Episodes
I'm sure Windows systems can be bludgeoned to have similar functionality... but may not keep on doing the job unattended for several years at a time (the low-power PC that does my getiplayer stuff is a headless EeePC that I don't touch more than a couple of times a year). Andy Windows doesn't need bludgeoning. Simply set up a Scheduled Task through Control Panel to run every night. Mine runs get_iplayer--pvr.bat at 00.01 as my ISP doesn't count usage between midnight and 8 a.m. I use the Web PVR manager with no problems to control what programmes are downloaded. Be careful of programmes with punctuation marks in the title (e.g. Who Do You Think You Are?) as they might need a bit of tampering with what the web pvr set up. The only occasional missed programme gets picked up the following night if it hasn't been listed on iPlayer when the job runs. I run using a Samsung Notebook using Windows 7 Starter, but transfer the files to an external 1TB HD that is normally attached to a different machine. I have to admit that I use Radio Downloader for most radio programmes as I had that before I found get_iplayer and some of its features are better than those offered by the latter (IMHO).
